The balance in the first one feels way off for me. I don't know what it is. Maybe the size of the tree vs her placement in the photo.

Totally agree, I find the second photo in that set to be the strongest one, but I do like to have a few others to show variation, and I thought the variation that shot brought added more than the imbalance of the shot subtracted.
If the only feedback I'm getting is that a shot I thought wasn't that great isn't that great, I think I'm doing alright :v:
The photos would be great if it wasn't for the model in them.
She looks so awkward, unnatural and out of place in them.

Partially agree, partially disagree. You're right, she does look awkard in the shots, however she is also the focal point. I think the three shots above sans the model would just fall into the category of 'mediocre shit photographed ok-ishly'. With the girl there it adds obvious intention to the image, which I think adds to it. My largest problem is without a doubt posing people, I need to talk to some more friends about that...
I think the biggest problem is the dress choice.
I think the biggest problem is the dress choice.
As a male I don't see a problem with it, that being said, I know fuck all about female fashion.
I don't know much about fashion, but I do know when something doesn't look like it fits with the surroundings.
I'm not saying they're bad photographs, it's just that the dress seems to have more of a beach feel rather than swamp/forest.
Okay, I don't really have anything to add to that, I don't think it looks like it's clothing you would wear to the beach, but again, that's totally subjective. The clothing could have been better, probably, but as I said earlier I don't really know what I'm talking about when it comes to fashion so i just try to outline my ideas to the model, and let them decide what to wear.
I'm gonna be harsh again but it's just to point you in the right direction
the first one is very out of place. It's a touristy pose, she looks like she's just standing there to say "Here's a picture of me and the swamp I visited" while mom tries to figure out how to take a picture with a digital point and shoot.
the second is stale yet more "Look at me" posed, but it's too widely framed to really focus on her as the main subject. A shot like this needs her to not pay attention to the camera; to be walking, exploring, be part of a story as to why a girl in a dress like that is in the middle of tallgrass and trees. Also, the foreground tuft of grass is really annoying and feels like it's in my face.
The third is almost good, but I think one thing ruin it: it's presented with the other two. I'm left thinking "she's standing... in a swamp again... facing the camera head on with nothing important or relevant going on. "Here I am, in the swamp again". I do like that she actually moved though, getting her arm up. I don't like the locked knees again, you always get the weird lumpy shapes if you let your legs lock back.
my nit-picky two cents. I like the third by itself, but it has room to improve.
yay, actual reddit r/photocritique quality criticism for once :v:
I agree with your comments on the second/ third, however I don't really feel that the first shot is snapshot-esque. I think if I had figured out a pose that was more engaging it would have helped the shot, definitely, but outside of that and the focus issue I think that the rest of the shot is fairly good.
True.
I think the problem is she's engaging the camera, intentionally standing there and waiting for a picture to be taken. More dynamic would be had if- though obviously out of place since you guys are in a swamp- she looked like she was just hanging about. Even if she looks up and makes eye contact with the camera for shots, make it look like she was there before you decided to take a picture. People don't just stand out in the middle of nowhere, but if they're out and about they may be sitting, leaning against a tree, sprawled out in the grass on a picnic blanket, whatever.

yeah, that's an idea. We were fairly hesitant for being too adventurous (despite the fact we were in a swamp) because it was really bloody cold and we didn't want to get all that wet. My original idea was for the shots to be of her with the sun rising up behind her, just above the horizon with those dramatics outlines, etc, but the sun never rose, instead it just slipped behind some clouds and stayed there :(
I think she looks fine in the second shot, although she could probably be posed better.
The first and third shots could do without her, they already have enough interesting stuff going on that they don't really need a person to make the shot.
here's some from the style that I feel at home in:

I love these two, although the sunlight one would have been better if you were in the centre of the alley.
although true, standing directly in someone's way like that probably wouldn't go down so well.
So then I'm taking it you didn't know him then. Regardless, I still think that would have made the image perfect.

lol nope, as it was he was probably thinking 'what the fuck is with these guys walking down this alleyway with all their cameras... must be vandals or terrorists or something..'
ok, it's been a while... massive post incoming:

I really like the portraits that you have, especially "Canon AE1-P - Ilford FP4+ (11 of 15)"
And the train tracks on the dock, very nice stuff.
thanks
I really like 2 of 19, but I feel like the composition is missing something. Like the tracks(?) aren't centered on the path, but it looks like you tried to make them look centered by cutting off the left. but it didn't work out that way. and so it throws my perception off.... like if you hadn't tried to hide it, it'd look perfect. everything else in that picture is gorgeous and blue without being neon/boring/pastel.
17 of 19 confuses me. I would have liked for more of the woman to be in focus. it's pretty lucky, considering the knife itself seems blurred, even; your DOF was spot on for what you were going for but I would have rather had at least her hand in focus, too. it's too distracting to be blurred.
the blown highlights of 3 of 15 make me happy, though. there are other ways to make that shot amazing (mostly doing more with that other guy) but this at least feels genuine.

I don't even really understand what you're trying to say here :v: The focal point of the image is clearly the tracks that are going down into the distance, which you can then see turn sharply to the right, the objects on the edges of the frame (which I think you're talking about...) are totally subordinate and hold stuff all visual weight, they're the kind of thing that you don't notice unless you're really really looking for them. Also, I doubt that this imag would be 'perfect' if I did all the things that you said, there would still be flaws... 'Perfect' is thrown around on this forum far to frequently...

Not luck, it was planned :v: . I think that one totally comes down to personal preference... I personally think that all that matters is what's being cut with the knife, with the background merely adding additional context, so I took the photo as such.
the blown highlights of 3 of 15 make me happy, though. there are other ways to make that shot amazing (mostly doing more with that other guy) but this at least feels genuine.
I'm sure Heather would appreciate being called a guy :v: . Again, not really sure where you're going with this feedback... there are other ways to make every shot interesting, there are always things that could be different, it's one of those 'coulda woulda didnt' kind of scenarios.
Sorry if I seemed a bit harsh... The feedback on Facepunch really lacks a lot of technical knowledge, and an understanding of artistic intent...
I'm assuming you take the picture you want to take, and I'm telling you why I would or wouldn't want to look at it. There are 1001 ways to make a single shot into perfection. Each shot has its own way to be perfect. Calling one shot perfect isn't meant to imply that there is no other way to take or present that shot, it just means that there is no way to take that shot any better. Making generalized statements about a community of any sort is unnecessary.
The tracks aren't centered on the path, but it seems like you tried to make them look centered, and so that part of the picture looks off balance. It's like you're trying to hide its true nature with angles and all that good stuff. Despite everything else, that makes me not want to look at the picture for too long.
Big globs of blurry near (and contextually related to) what's in focus does not work in this shot.
Everyone is a guy. I was saying you could have found something better composition wise, because I don't know if Heather is supposed to be the subject, or part of a greater subject, or was just in the way. It feels like a genuine photo, which is important, but it needs something more than that.
I don't need four years of art school to tell you why I don't like your picture. Maybe it would help me be more articulate and make more sense the first time, but if I managed to get my point across eventually, I'll settle for getting it wrong the first few times.
