Can We Just Stop Trying to Convert/Convince People?
Read the second part of my post. If there is an argument about role playing games, perhaps the argument will draw fans to the specific games being discussed and create a larger fan base for said game. Cats and Dogs, maybe someone will decide on whether to get a dog or a cat. Which anime to watch, or whether to watch anime at all.
Plus, arguments let you know who is on your side, and can be sort of a bonding experience of the sorts.
Plus, they're damned entertaining.
And furries?
Lol.
Edited.
Also, yeah I agree... I seriously get sick of the childish arguments on Facepunch. It's not the fact that they aren't needed it's just sometimes they get so bone dry of originality that it will usually be the following...
1. Furries vs Non-Furries
2. Mac Users vs Window Users
3. Religious Bystanders vs Non-Religious Bystanders
4. People who like anime vs people who don't.
5. TnB vs Every other RP
6. Slob187/Chrisaster vs Dark RP
7.... You get the fucking point.
It eventually gets bone dry of originality and drives a bunch of nails into people's skulls.
Republicans vs Democrats
Britsh vs Americans
Gmod_Fan77 vs Facepunch
The list is never ending.
Doesn't mean atheists have the right to be hypocritical.
If you don't want religion shoved in your face, then don't shove atheism in their face.
That's really all there is to it.
I don't really shove it in people's face, per se. I will argue 'til I'm blue in the face if a person wants to though. Or I'll toss a thread up on FP. Doesn't mean they have to read it or participate.

True.
Either way, more atheists need to realize that they're doing the same thing to religious people that religious people are doing to them while simultaneously saying, "WHAT UR DOIN IS WRONG". It's the same the other way around. There's no point to debating religion really because no one really absolutely knows either way and the debates just go around and around in circles while solving nothing.

Can We Just Stop Trying to Convert/Convince People?
Way to go in trying to sound like you agree with the OP.
I respect the right of any person to believe in the religion of their choice.
I also believe that the second the world casts off religion is the second people start advancing much quicker.
And furries?
Lol.
Furry arguments let us know who the furries are (Even though most of the time you can tell from their avatars)
No hope in the OP's wish coming true.

Are you trying to convince me to NOT agree with the OP? :v:
And I already said I did agree with him. Read my first post. Derp.
I don't shove my Christianity in other people's faces.
It may be old as the internet, but I stand to the old addage:

The way I see it, everyone on the internet is so convinced they are right that they will never change their views, and indeed that they have a duty to convince all of us that they are right. We of course know they are wrong and must try and convince them that WE are right.
So, no, people will never stop arguing on the internet. The best WE can do is stand to the side and let them wipe each other right, leaving just a gooey core of us apathetic intellectuals in lawn chairs quietly chuckling to ourselves.
Bliss...
Holy shit. I just realized that this thread is turning into an argument where two sides try to convince people whether or not it is okay to convince people.

Not really.
Not really.
Yeah, really.
Oh, I see what you're doing.
Yeah, really.

Clever, aren't I?
Holy shit. I just realized that this thread is turning into an argument where two sides try to convince people whether or not it is okay to convince people.
No it's not, because the answer to that question is so obvious there is no need for debate! Of course it's not okay to try to convince people to change their views! Your not their conscience!
Forums are for discusses things, why shouldn't we be allowed to convince people of our opinions? Is that not what discussion is for, to share your opinion, try to find other like minded people, or collaborate? Without debates, forums would be horribly useless and boring.

Sharing opinions is good.
Trying to convince someone to change their ways/thoughts/beliefs to match yours is usually futile and pointless.

you must use force !!!
Arguing about subjective things like which console is best or which band is best is completely pointless, but many arguments are based around things with objective aspects that can be logically argued and can inform others of their incorrect positions.
I often join in on debates/arguments about religion/science etc, and while I don't think for a second that they'll jump on over to my side, if they cannot counter any or at least the majority of my points then I assume they'd understand my points and refrain from using their poor arguments in the future. Thus if their opinion carries less and less weight I'm sure eventually with decent application of critical thinking they'll see the error in their ways, it does happen. Of course there are people who act like brick walls and won't concede no matter what you say, but it should be obvious that your words are being lost on them quite early on.
But still: beliefs inform actions. A lot of people still think it's okay to limit the rights of certain groups of people for certain things, a lot of the time because they've just been raised that way, if you can show them there is another side to what they've been raised to believe then it can only help, I hope.

:argh:
Facepunch loves to discuss and argue til we're blue in the face, it's just who we are.

Sounds like a lame spy movie plot.
Are you trying to convince me to stop trying to convince people that what they are convinced about is wrong?
Well, I'm convinced.
But this forum would be boring as hell if we just agreed to settle our differences.
I would like to register my disgust with you but we have all settled our interests. Perhaps we can come to a compromise.
I agree. Let's all make a humming sound.
Yes. Let's do that.
Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

You're so naive it hurts.

What are we going to say then?
If you stop trying to convice people to think that what you find to be right is right then you basically kill most discussions. When people reply to a thread it is to share their opinion. Quoting would be useless if it was only used to say "I agree with this." or "I don't agree but whatever."
A forum is meant to spark up discussion based on opinions where one try to end it with either being converted or still standing where they started but with more knowledge of the other side of the cause (Which also means they have stronger reasons to believe what they believe if the other side did not change it at all).
I'm sure I would hate a forum where everyone accepted everyones opinions and never tried to say that they completely disagree. These kind of fights can make both sides realize new things about what they thought and possibly end up changing belief and understand more.
Stupid fanboy discussions are also funny, yet annoying. But they can really help people understand both sides more. Though the problem usually ends up in being "I'm not going to believe in what you say, it's a lie!". But lots of great arguments and information about the console can come up and teach the other side that maybe they aren't that different after all.
Umm, OP, what are you talking about.
I am going to try and convince people of my point so that they don't vote for stuff I don't want. It's common sense. I'm not doing it to be an ass (for the most part), I just don't want you assholes voting for shit that I think is wrong. As for the Mac vs PC and PC vs Console debates, the more fans people can make of one system, the better it is for that system, and the person making the argument.
But my point is, you're not making any fans at all.
In a perfect world, the newspapers are boring. :gonk:
