Damn I was just about to post these too, my faith in the movie skyrocketed with #1. It actually has the cyberpunk aesthetic down, it's not all clean looking and shit like Minority Report or other movies that try to be cyberpunk. [editline]22nd September 2016[/editline] Well to be honest, Motoko never did entirely look Asian to begin with. And funny enough a lot of the people complaining that I know of have never seen Ghost in the Shell, which kind of makes their arguments a bit off. Hell I'm half Asian myself and I really don't see much issue in this because I think Scarlett Johansson looks more the part than the girl from Pacific Rim everyone wanted to play Major. And when you're casting actors for roles, getting the look down is the most important part, and Motoko really doesn't look Asian, she has a Japanese name, yes, but when it comes to her actual look I think they actually did try. Even the creator of the manga was perfectly fine with her being Major as well, and even went as far as to say she had the right look.
The amount of anime characters that actually look Japanese is pretty low in general so I don't think that really flies in an adaptation of something set in Japan.
please don't fuck this up please
Just to add some narrative context, this isn't going to be anything like GITS except names and a few hamfisted references. Story is the Major is a one-of-a-king "human cyborg hybrid" (yes that's their own words). So immediately one of the core factors of the Major's character is non-existent. Being a cyborg specifically with a body model that's civilian-grade in looks is central to who she is. The whole struggle to find her own identity despite being perceived as the same as everyone else on top of the fact that she doesn't actually own her body is a consistent struggle. Then lets look at the actual plot synopsis:
Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “GHOST IN THE SHELL” follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.
The Laughing Man in this case is the terrorist wanting to wipe out Hanka's AI developments. So again completely missing the true point of Laughing Man, who/what he is, what created him and what he stands for. It just seems to be mashing in a bunch of elements and hoping to forge a plot out of it. Cyberpunk at its core is a narrative-based genre. A bunch of visual elements don't make it, the themes and ideas do. So they can shove all these visual references in all they like it's not going to shield the fact that they've completely missed the point of GITS.
why did they have to fuck it up
why did they have to fuck it up
Movies tend to be geared towards a "have to finish it in time for this release date" rather than a "lets take the time to do this right. It's done when it's done" mindset.
Hollywood has been planning this movie for fucking forever, since like 8 years ago. Unless your Disney it seems like you can't do a faithful adaptation that pleases fans
Alright you've got my interest movie.
The amount of anime characters that actually look Japanese is pretty low in general so I don't think that really flies in an adaptation of something set in Japan.
Always relevant, whenever someone brings this up. Might be posted a lot, but obviously not everyone has seen it. Otherwise it wouldn't be brought up.
Always relevant, whenever someone brings this up. Might be posted a lot, but obviously not everyone has seen it. I'm just saying that for a lot of art styles, you could cast a white actor/actress and it wouldn't really matter. The point was that in this case, the character is stated to be Japanese, with the plot taking place in the country of Japan, therefore you should cast a Japanese actress for her.
Always relevant, whenever someone brings this up. Might be posted a lot, but obviously not everyone has seen it. Otherwise it wouldn't be brought up.
As much as I feel like I should agree with the video, I think there's a lot wrong with it. Apart from there being a lot of different art styles, I think one of the biggest reasons why I consider anime people to look white is because they're rarely drawn with the epicanthic folds in the eyelids, which most asians have. Like take Mulan for example, who clearly looks asian because of the folds And then take the girl from Ghost in the Shell and you can see her inner eye corner [t]http://i.imgur.com/AAVm14r.png[/t]
I haven't seen the original movie or series, I know I should, so my question is how true is this to the orignals?
I haven't seen the original movie or series, I know I should, so my question is how true is this to the orignals?
The shitty free to play Nexon Ghost in the Shell game on Steam is more true to the originals than this.
ScarJo looks too human, too alive. I want more dead eyes staring into nothingness.
I'm super skeptical about this movie, I'm getting serious Lucy vibes from ScarJo, and her "performance" in that movie was laughable at best God I hate that movie

Otherwise it wouldn't be brought up.
as someone who's done a lot of press photography for cons and studio shooting for cosplayers in the past, jesus fuck american cosplayers are HAMMY and that ruins the cosplay scene more than facial structure ever could. Nobody knows when not to smile like an overcaffeinated fangirl, and you get incredibly weak poses where you can kind of tell what they're going for, but they've never looked in a mirror. One of the bigger offenders at the core is the budget culture generally surrounding it all, meaning people slap shit together for pennies on the dollar and employ a lot of duct tape and cardboard, grab 'good enough' finds from goodwill and hastily glue colored construction paper chunks on to make the details people have fun with it, which is important, but dear lord people need to practice their shit and understand what they look like before hitting the con floor
A lot of people in this thread are calling the movie shit when we haven't even seen the trailer. Wait until the movie comes out to say it's garbage, not before. If Ghostbusters did anything, it proved that right.

It can be a kickass movie of its own right but it'd be dragging down a franchise just to have flavortext to work with and squeeze some of those sweet sweet name recognition sales figures out of it
Oh by Hammy I thought you meant overweight, because I remember reading an interview with some Japanese director who said that there's a lot more overweight cosplayers in America than anywhere else.

So far they seem to have put effort in the setting which might be a good indicator gives a bit of hope.

They might not be saying the whole truth of the movie because they don't want to spoil it.
atmosphere and artwise it looks ok i guess but idg how some of you can go "hmm yeah ok this will be a good movie after all" after seing like barely 1 minute of very vague footage
all but the 5th and maybe the 4th look similar also, the expression that the actress had in the 5th teaser really made me doubt how good the acting will be. She looks like a deer caught in headlights
Motoko is supposed to have a perfect, off-the-shelf cyborg body so canonically she's supposed to have a very perfect, beautiful face. Now I don't wanna be mean to ol' Scarlett but... let's start with the phrase "human-cyborg hybrid" I'm liking that they've got some good visual style going on so far but all the props in the world can't save it if they decide to take the complexities of the genre the series is built upon and boil it down to a generic american sci fi thriller full of empty technobabble, excused away with an existing series' flavor sprinkled on top
Anything ever adapted by Hollywood is completely hopeless anyway.

I'll wait until I see a trailer myself.
What is the story behind this ? Is it just photo-shop or another actress ?
Pretty sure it's just photoshop

This movie probably won't even hold a candle to the anime, but I'll probably watch it anyway. Those teasers looked pretty cool. Really liked #1
