man that better just be test costumes or something because those just look like really low quality cosplays
batou looks like a deranged hobo
it's really strange togusa just looks like a japanese dude when he was the most american looking guy on the team, batou coming close behind
dream casting tho

I can see Owen Wilson's Togusa now.

To be honest, even though it would be making the "white washing" problem worse, I would love to see Ron Perlman as Batou.
I could accept scarlett johannsen playing Kusanagi honestly if the story didn't sound like such complete shit
"one of a kind human-cyborg hybrid" lol
^Isn't a fucking cyborg a human cyborg hybrid like what the fuck
That and he looks older than the character should be.
Either they put old age makeup on him or it's a really unflattering picture, cuz the actor is this guy:
[t]http://www4.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Chin+Han+Marco+Polo+New+York+Series+Premiere+QnJNrMARlBKl.jpg[/t]
I can see why they'd be dumb and make him old because he's mostly born-flesh with few enhancements and prefers to use old equipment and shit. It's dumb to make him an old guy though, I liked that he had his preferences while appearing to be the youngest in the group
Also Batou's eyes probably won't be replaced. There's no tracking markers on his face in that spycam footage. Maybe he has an accident in the movie and gets his iconic eyes. Idk.
Or they'll pull a fucking DMC and they passing off the actor's eyes as his augmented eyes, and he sees the old bottle caps in a jar and says something like "MAN I REALLY HATED THOSE OLD BOTTLE CAP EYES THEY SURE WERE DUMBD LOOKING"
This is frustrating. They nailed the look but the story seems to miss the mark so hardcore
let's start with the phrase "human-cyborg hybrid"
I'm liking that they've got some good visual style going on so far but all the props in the world can't save it if they decide to take the complexities of the genre the series is built upon and boil it down to a generic american sci fi thriller full of empty technobabble, excused away with an existing series' flavor sprinkled on top
Considering any Cyborg is by definition a hybrid, no comment.

On top of most issues we're seeing the producer said he doesn't consider GITS an "inherently Japanese story."
Despite it being heavily steeped in Japanese politics, culture, commentary and plenty of relevance to modern day Japan as a whole. That isn't to say it's hard to understand from an outsider perspective like Doomed Megalopolis but Japanese culture/politics are integral to the IP.
What's worse is this was his way of explaining why they decided to cast white actors in certain roles.
If GITS weren't a pinnacle of Cyberpunk and just generally an important source to draw from, I could easily look past certain issues. But what we've got is yet another Hollywood film that had to meet a set release date, got its main character casting based off of star power and is immediately missing integral elements from the source.
Frankly it's looking like another prime example of Hollywood slop similar to the Total Recall remake.
Batou looks like a Tekken Tag character.
I was really hoping this movie would do some kind of make-up/CGI magic as seen in Surrogates to drive home the distinction between the augmented/cyborgs and regular folk like Togusa.

Never thought I would find myself complaining about SJ being too human on camera.
Motoko looks pretty different between each adaptation anyway so for me personally it's not that huge of a leap now that I'm thinking about it.
Ex:

Sort of, the last example is moot because it's from the prequel movies, and in the GITS/2nd GiG you actually see her old body that is in the prequel movies. All in all in the manga and movies/anime it's explain she goes through several different bodies so it's open to interpretation.

Well that's not necessarily a bad thing. One thing I think we all need to remember is GITS and it's different versions all have their own take on Motoko and the Universe. The only thing that really binds them together is the general theme and the basics.
Her acting "too human" could in fact be part of the plot, since the concept of humanity is a central theme through out all of the series.
I think most of us get too fixated on the SAC/2ndGig Motoko, whether its because that's where we first learned of Ghost in the Shell or because that is what has the most material.
Yeah, gonna be honest here, I'm seeing this just for the cyberpunk aesthetic and Takeshi.
Someone could make a 2 hour movie that's just a single shot of a wall and I'd watch it if Takeshi was in it.

I mean we have a white guy as Batou anyways, so there's really no excuse. Ron Perlman would be perfect.
Motoko is supposed to have a perfect, off-the-shelf cyborg body so canonically she's supposed to have a very perfect, beautiful face. Now I don't wanna be mean to ol' Scarlett but.
No, she canonically has an average, run off the mill looking prosthetic body, filled to the brim with government/military tech like advanced optical camouflage and stuff. Being beautiful would just draw unwanted attention when they mostly act/investigate undercover.
What bothers me about this movie is that she doesn't look like AND doesn't act like the major at all. Anyone who's a big fan of Ghost in the Shell should have issues with this. I feel like this movie is going to do to Motoko Kusanagi what Other M did to Samus Aran.
The only thing that was supposed to be "perfect" was her facial symmetry, which made the uncanny valley that much deeper.

How the hell do you know how she's going to act?
The movie isn't out yet and all we have are teaser trailers and set photos.
I was bothered by the fact they went with a Caucasian aesthetic for this movie, but I'm not going to shit on the actors or the movie itself until it comes out.
I liked her a lot in Under the Skin and Lost in Translation. Those more quiet, mysterious roles fit her.

I see your point and it's merits but I'll be the first to say I have no idea how SJ is gonna hold up acting wise, and I can't know if the CG in these teaser are considered final.
I was just genuinely hoping for a more consistent handling of the cyberized look, atleast they should give her the classic cyborg grooves like the Dolls has. Doesn't have to be more than a subtle details along her thigh and forearms.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/5VuXmfD.png[/t]
I really think this look is one of the integral parts of the GiTS aesthetic that all adaptions thus far has incorporated in their style.
With this style I have a hard time seeing Motoko being picked and part and put back together by the maintenance AI, though I still have my hopes up.

I'd imagine he's judging off her performance in Lucy or one of her other films.
tbh I'm not too confident in her ability to play a character like Motoko Kusanagi based on her performance in Lucy.
Considering any Cyborg is by definition a hybrid, no comment.
In SAC, season one I think, she says that her human components amount to just a few living brain cells.

I'm relatively certain it was stated somewhere in the canon that she has a generic sex model. She specifically wanted that because she'd fit in easier and people would be less likely to think she's an undercover anti-terrorist operative.
I liked her a lot in Under the Skin and Lost in Translation. Those more quiet, mysterious roles fit her.
That's part of the reason why I have confidence in SJ, Lost in Translation is one of my favorite films and a lot of people haven't seen her other stuff besides the Marvel movies unfortunately.
No, she canonically has an average, run off the mill looking prosthetic body, filled to the brim with government/military tech like advanced optical camouflage and stuff. Being beautiful would just draw unwanted attention when they mostly act/investigate undercover.
But wouldn't the average run off the mill robot body be beautiful? That's what would sell the most.
as someone who's done a lot of press photography for cons and studio shooting for cosplayers in the past, jesus fuck american cosplayers are HAMMY and that ruins the cosplay scene more than facial structure ever could. Nobody knows when not to smile like an overcaffeinated fangirl, and you get incredibly weak poses where you can kind of tell what they're going for, but they've never looked in a mirror. One of the bigger offenders at the core is the budget culture generally surrounding it all, meaning people slap shit together for pennies on the dollar and employ a lot of duct tape and cardboard, grab 'good enough' finds from goodwill and hastily glue colored construction paper chunks on to make the details
people have fun with it, which is important, but dear lord people need to practice their shit and understand what they look like before hitting the con floor
the bolded part is really the only part that matters honestly
you're not wrong: overwhelming majority of american cosplayers really do struggle with legitimate artistic photo shoots. the main drive to cosplaying at cons is the enthusiasm of their respective fandom, so having believable photos taken just becomes a secondary priority. months and months of work only to show it off for 3 days maximum. you also have a huge divide between the type of cosplay you listed (duct tape and cardboard), and the recently higher end $2,000 completely custom-designed, form-fitted outfits from "professional" cosplayers
anyways i should watch gits
I still don't understand why Batou doesn't have the cybernetic eyes
Same reason why the actor doesn't wear an eyepatch for his role in GoT.
That and he looks older than the character should be.
Isn't he also the youngest member of team as well?

This isn't Lucy though.
This isn't Lucy though.
No shit, I'm judging her acting ability off what I have seen and so far I haven't really been thrilled which in turn means I'm not too confident in her ability to play a more serious character like Motoko considering Lucy was supposed to be more of a serious character and all that.
I don't really see it mentioned but I really enjoyed the second movie "innocence". I somehow liked it better than first but I may need to rewatch Ghost in the shell. It's worth a watch after the first movie and SAC if your a new fan.
Isn't he also the youngest member of team as well?
Yes(ish), hence why its so out of character. Their ages are never exactly specified, but with him being the only full human on the team it's hinted at that.

That whole ending threw a lot of people off.
Granted the story explores some good ideas and it's Batou centric AKA immediately good but the first one is just so tight and there's not one bit where the quality drops.
