Wow, and I'm going to college and studying law enforcement to be a police officer for this shit? I had the idea that I'd be one of those people who becomes a police officer to actually help and protect people. If I'm ever ordered to do anything like this pointless shit, I'll quit.
[QUOTE=OvB;17539237]My god you are dense.[/QUOTE]
I find this hilariously ironic.
Permits are city-specific legislation. They don't override First Amendment rights.
[editline]06:21PM[/editline]
But it's cute how you're pretending you understand any of this.
[editline]06:21PM[/editline]
By cute I mean disgusting in your man-child degree of intellect.
[editline]06:23PM[/editline]
In fact as I referenced earlier ([url]http://www.pittnews.com/node/19961[/url]) Code Pink SUED Pittsburgh and had a federal judge force the city to allow their protest.
[editline]06:24PM[/editline]
Let me sum that up for you: The city denied their request for a permit, the group sued the entire city, WON, and then a federal judge forced the city to allow their protest.
So much for you being the smart one.
[editline]06:24PM[/editline]
And it's cute how you rate dumb as though it means you aren't fucking wrong as wrong can possibly be.

I was just referring to whoever rated dumb.
Facepunch has this strange notion that if you silently rate someone it means you win.
Point still stands, though. Code Pink, among six others, sued the city of Pittsburgh on the grounds that their denial of permits defied their First Amendment rights, WON, and then proceeded to protest.
Permits are honestly a joke.

So they had no right to gather without applying for a permit first?

I honestly think a vast majority of cops, become cops mainly for the power that they obtain. Which is why I don't blindly trust every cop.
[QUOTE=Wakka V2;17539748]So they had no right to gather without applying for a permit first?[/QUOTE]
Yeah, they do, as secured by the First Amendment.
Even if the city tries to disperse them on the basis that they have no permit they were fully within their rights to assemble peacefully (unlawful assembly being the assembly to do something unlawful, not assembling without a permit).
They will then have a helluva' case when they sue the city after the protests for abridging their First Amendment rights.

From what I understand the Code Pink permit was to camp outside all night on the grounds, the judge denied their permit to camp, but allowed them to pitch their tent.
Code Pink is nothing but a bunch of real life trolls anyway who probably looked for any loophole they could to make a scene and sue the state.

Honestly all the cops I've met were assholes. I know there's good cops, but the ones on patrol typically aren't the good ones. They're one step above rent-a-badges.

Uhh, the First Amendment is not a "loophole."
And six organizations sued the city.
[editline]06:34PM[/editline]
And the judge was a federal judge who overruled the local judge's ruling. You didn't read the article.
[editline]06:37PM[/editline]
The Federal government has allowed local government to establish permit laws, but they do not respect them, they do not uphold them and often times they overrule them.
Permit laws are the loophole that local law enforcement tries to use to stop free speech.

In all my life, I can honestly say I've met only about five good cops. Almost every other cop I've met has been a power-abusive dick... and no, I'm not one of those people who are constantly out causing a problem or issue.
The permit's are not for gathering in general, you can take your picket sign onto the sidewalk and protest all you want. There for assembly's in large numbers that cause traffic/local store problems where cops are needed to watch over to make sure nothing happens. It may be stupid but it's the local law and they have to follow it.

They also do not override First Amendment rights that ensure the government has absolutely no power to stem peaceful protest.
[editline]06:41PM[/editline]
The only way a permit is going to be enforced is if the protest turns into a riot.
[editline]06:41PM[/editline]
Otherwise the protesters can sue the state, and very easily win.
I have seen it happen personally.

Some areas of the protest turned semi-violent which may have provoked the police to react. But honestly I really don't care anymore.

A UK G20 Protest.
Hurr I can run into the police with my hands up! that means I'm not going to hurt them so they can't hit me :downs:
[QUOTE=OvB;17540042]Some areas of the protest turned semi-violent which may have provoked the police to react. But honestly I really don't care anymore.[/QUOTE]
Police are entirely within their rights to assume a defensive posture with riot police under any circumstances.
The issue arises when the police go on the offensive and begin detaining and dispersing individuals.
Hell, this G20 sounds as if it was the most peaceful.
LANKIST HAS SPOKEN
But in all seriousness, I'm taking the police's side on this. Can you imagine if a crowd that size got out of control?
Permits or otherwise, it was the G20 summit and when faced with riot police you shouldn't stand around watching them closely, and generally getting in their way. Watching the video it just seems like all those people out there had no reason to get in the way of the police. People appear to have been given plenty of warning to move. I suppose it is good sport to go down to the riot police, throw a few rocks at them and stick it to the man, or stand in their way and protest your rights infront of them. But sometimes you have to draw the line with the mob, and this G20 summit was important enough for the police to close down streets and deny people access. Their wouldn't have been any trouble if people just understood that they need to stay away from the areas the police are controlling instead of engaging with the police. While there is nothing wrong about going down there and having a look at the riot police and taking a few pictures, staying there for a prolonged time isn't a smart thing to do. Even if your intentions are peaceful, it's common sense that riot police are going to take action if you stick around too long, especially if a giant megaphone is telling you they will.

We should assume that every situation will turn out violent?

Could you imagine if suddenly every airline pilot decided to go on strike mid-air?
If one stupid bastard tries to shoot a cop or something, the whole crowd will start a stampede and injure or possibly kill someone.
Crowd control doesn't hurt anyone if the crowd just stays the hell back. The crowd itself however can harm someone if one little thing goes wrong. Leaving a large gathering of people like that without any restraints could make it escalate into a riot.
[QUOTE=PartyPancake;17540408]If one stupid bastard tries to shoot a cop or something, the whole crowd will start a stampede and injure or possibly kill someone.[/QUOTE]
Yes crowds ten to run TOWARD gunfire.
To sum this all up, a bunch of wannabe rebels tried to look cool by being defiant and disobeying municipal law. In the end, they got a broken nail and shattered ego.

Why exactly do you say wannabe rebels? A lot of the people who were there, were actually there for a reason, and not just to seem edgy.

Uhh, the actions of an individual do not warrant the abuse of the whole.
One guy gets violent. One guy gets arrested.
Ten guys get violent, ten guys get arrested.
You don't try to abridge the speech of the peaceful under the pretense that it is for safety.
