There's no gameplay in this, still, but there ae glimpses. Probably a stealth horror third person shooter where you keep a close eye on the shoulder thing while moving through increasingly bizarre environments. Sounds cool to me.
I doubt that kojima would really want to cut his ideas down to a 2 hour sequence and make a movie instead of a game. Games can be much longer while holding the player's interest for that entire period. There are TV series for length, but because those are released weekly instead of all at once the production is affected by audience reaction and has a different dynamic entirely built for intermittent viewing rather than as one final product with breaks. Improvements in later episodes also cant trickle down to the earlier episodes as it would in development of a movie or game, either.
Just to add, a friend noticed that the arm band thingy may be a health indicator, since it starts out green and when the guy who was getting grabbed by the giant humanoid thing and started stabbing himself, it changes from green to yellow to red

Yeah that definitely seems right. Guy crushed by the car also has a red armband from the start, since he's injured.
I noticed that when Norman recites the "once there was an explosion" line at the end of the cinematic, he is STANDING on the EEEEEEEDGE of the crater. Nuclear war? Meteors with ayy lmaos on them? Meteors without ayy lmaos on them that did something to the world?
This is Kojima.
It's going to be a 9 hour long movie where ever you like it or not.
You may not like this but this is what Kojima's peak performance is.
Yeah but the 9 hour long movie is usually broken up with equal or more gameplay and audio diary hamburger shenanigans.

I’d guess nuclear, given how he had a pretty firm anti-nuke stance in MGS V.

I noticed when the guy was stabbing himself to death his wrist bracelet went from blue to green, then orange and then red. I'm fairly certain that's going to be the games way to tell you your health, through diegetic HUD-elements (kind of like Dead Space does it with Isaac's suit).

Every MGS game is anti nuke
Assuming it is Mads in this new trailer, I actually have some doubts that Mads' character is a villain. In trailer 2 he shows up after the black goo appears and Guillermo plugs into the baby. (I assume that means the arrival of the hand monsters). Before we knew about these monsters it seemed like Guillermo was scared of Mads' crew - but now it seems clear he's scared of the monsters. I think he may be there to assist Guillermo.
He then shows up again in the new trailer, he doesn't harm Reedus, in fact, it seems like he's doing the hand signal to him (unless there's more unseen). And he's equipped with a Pixar light as well, which makes him feel just as disconnected to the weirdness as anyone else is. I think he could be another corpse disposal team.
That, or Mads is some third party doing their own thing
I just thought about something.

Could the skullface/mads character be the same type of enemy as those guys floating in the distance? And if so, does the shape of that fetus sensor thing symbolize their pose that they make when it senses their presence? Levitating and with their arms out, head tilted up a bit? The bottom part is made of two sensor parts, like legs.
this is some sci-fi, lovecraftian, Nausicaa shit and I love it
God fucking damn, the sync between the second and third trailers is both amazing and terrifying.
What kind of multi dimensional shit is going on.

I am assuming he is a "corrupted" human or something along those lines, since it's clear he has at least some supernatural abilities.

Yeah, but that doesn't make him a villain really. The trope is there I suppose but I got this feeling it isn't gonna be so black and white with him.
The fact that the giant monster's head that ate that guy was actually a hand weirds me out.
Same with that creature that flys over the water.

I meant that his "being" was corrupted, not his morality. As I said before, I hope (and expect) him to be a third party frenemy, helping or obstructing the player based on the situation and his goals.

Mads and the guy who's likely mads both show up when there's a fetus present. I think their job is to find them and capture them with an army of demons/puppeteered dead at their command. If that's true, then they're probably antagonists of some sort, but at the same time there might be some bullshit kojima moment where it's revealed these "corrupted" humans are really using their powers for their own purposes (or think they are) and believe they still have some humanity left where it counts and what they're doing is right or something. They could also just be elite cronies for the main villain.
I have complete confidence in this game even though we haven't seen any gameplay yet. Just the amount of attention to detail shows how much everyone involved cares about making this a unique and orignal experience. This feels like a game that people will look back on in 20 years as a classic video game.

This seems pretty silly, I definitely think the game will be memorable, but we have no idea what the gameplay even is at all. For all you know it's going to be a middle-of-the-road shooter. I think it's a little bit pre-mature to be writing it off as game of the year, nobody even knows what it is. This is exactly what happened to No Man's Sky and countless other projects where people had skyrocketing expectations for a game where nobody even knew what it was.

I think its just that Kojima has built up a level of trust in his ability, so much so that people familiar with his work can be sufficiently confident in his output without seeing it immediately.

A difference between those two examples is no man's sky was had all this press surrounding it saying there's endless possibilities in the game. Meanwhile this is gets all the hype from the work put into world building, plus Kojima has an extremely solid reputation for making excellent games.
Partway through the latest clip from Death Stranding, Sam (played by Norman Reedus) watches as an explosion engulfs the giant, Lovecraftian-kaiju that projects through the fog. Suddenly we see an upside-down world submerged in water, where Sam exists among the flotsam and jetsam of the universe around him.
From the sound of it, this is where Sam, and the player, go every time they die. But don’t make the mistake of calling this “game over.” When you die in Death Stranding, you’re transported to this purgatory, where you’re free to explore in first-person. Because of some mysterious “unique” abilities Sam possesses, you can wander outside of your body, recovering items among other things. As Kojima explains, “At that point, you’re not dead or alive. It’s the equivalent of that screen that says ‘Continue?’ and a counter ticking down towards zero.”
From what Kojima told us, here's how it sounds -- when you’re ready to return to the world of the living, you can get back into your body. However, unlike most games which set you back to a point before you died, Death Stranding acknowledges your defeat, and seems to even embrace it. You’re transported back to the world after your death -- like in Dark Souls or roguelikes -- where your actions maintain an aura of persistence. The mechanic of “dying” is ubiquitous in video games, but it sounds as though Kojima is implementing systems inspired by purgatory and reincarnation as well.
"So as you saw in the trailer, you saw the crater, and when you come back, it’s still there. Most games would’ve taken you back to before the crater was made. So depending on the player, you might have a lot of craters all over the place -- depends on each player."
“Death will never pull you out of the game,” Kojima firmly stated.
Also from that article
2017 was a tumultuous year for many reasons. But for Kojima and his team’s progress on Death Stranding, one of the major stings was the SAG-AFTRA strike. “Last year, SAG AFTRA went on strike, and we expected it to end really soon. The strike started in November last year, and just finished in October. We weren’t able to do any performance capture or voice over, so in that aspect, we were delayed.”
What made it worse was that his stellar cast were eager to get to work. “I also had a hard time because I had Norman and Mads texting me asking what we were doing and I’d say ‘There’s a strike, there’s nothing I can do about it!’” With the strike finally over, Kojima and his crew commenced full performance capture sessions last week.

But that wasn’t all that troubled him this year. In a surprising moment of honesty and vulnerability, he explained how a rabid fanbase armed with the megaphone of social media can be a double-edged sword. “I’ve been reading a lot on the internet of people saying I’ve spent the last year just traveling around and having fun. A lot of people saying I’m wasting time and money. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.” It was clear that this weighed heavy on his shoulders. “We’re waiting for the right moment to show gameplay, but right now we’re on track with the project.”
So what has the team been doing this past year? Well, they've been making strides with the Decima Engine. As Kojima explains, "So, over this past year, we’ve been working on Decima. There are things we don’t know, we ask them, we make some requests. On our end, of course, we use the Decima engine very differently from the way they use it, especially when it comes to the cutscenes. So we make our own things there, and send it to them, show it to them, get their feedback. We are at that pace, currently."
Fans often bemoan the fact that we get a brief tease of Death Stranding, followed by months of radio silence. In typical internet fashion, the reaction can be extreme. Kojima isn’t immune to that. “There’s been a lot of stuff going on through this time, so it makes me pretty sad when people say ‘Oh, you’re just having fun and joking around and wasting money.’ You could ask so many people, but I really think that I’m doing this pretty fast. If you have a company, if you already have an engine, you already have the tools and the team together, and even then, it’s pretty standard for a AAA game to take three to five years to develop their games. For some games, it can take up to 10 years.”
On one hand I'm kinda sad that they reveal so much about the game since the trailer has lost some of it's abstract charm now that we know what's happening in it, but on the other hand I'm glad we know for sure that he has some idea of what the gameplay is going to be like and isn't making shit up as he goes along

Holy fucking shit all of that sounds so cool, and seems like we're going to get some PT esque moments if the 'dead' world is in First Person
Death Stranding's death mechanic is starting to sound like if in Bloodborne they implemented your deaths into the story and the world reacts to it. In fact it sounds like something I did for said game's short story for class. I like it! C'mon DS come to 2018!
Some details I noticed after going back and watching it after reading that interview

For ease of readings sake I'm giving the other two CDT6 characters names (under car guy is now Ethan, suicide guy is now David, Sam is obviously Sam)
- - - The hoods are to protect from the Timefall, but they seem to be pretty shitty at it since there's the risk of exposure if you fall on your back/side. You can see this on all three characters. Sam has a subtle gray patch on the right side of his chin hair, you can see this as he wakes up. David's beard is very grey compared to his eyebrows, and his lower face seems a bit more wrinkled as well. Presumably because he was also unconscious for a time, on his back/side, and getting direct contact with Timefall. You can see Ethan start aging more rapidly at the rain picks up and starts hitting him harder.
This seems curious to me. None of the characters seem particularly bothered by this, you'd think they'd be a bit more frightened of being permanently aged at that high of a rate. Especially Ethan, you'd think he would make an effort to cover his exposed face. Perhaps they aren't aware of the Timefall quite yet, and think its just normal rain? Perhaps they don't care because the respawn mechanic applies to more characters than just Sam? Or maybe they just don't care at all because everyone's screwed anyway? Maybe it's temporary?
- - - The burning effects under Sam's leg as he falls down is caused by blood from his leg dripping into the ground. No idea why, but it's definitely a result of each drop of blood from his hurt leg. Watch in 4K fullscreen and you can see this clearly.
- - - You can see both Sam and David subtly crying at different parts of the trailer. Despite what Kojima said in the interview, I'm not certain these are normal tears. Perhaps Sam's could be, but David is crying as he's trying to pull out Ethan and it seems like an odd time for it. Normally so much adrenaline would be pumping that you wouldn't have time for that sort of quiet man-tearing.

Trailers 2 + 1 sync together with 3, I don't see trailers 1+2 syncing with each other though
