That's the best solo of anything I ahve ever seen.
Oh god, to be honest that sounded horrible at some parts
The talent is more knowing how to create the sounds, not him playing.
i hate emerson lake and palmer
So I'm planning on getting a synth soon. I will be just starting out, but I've narrowed it down to either a MicroKorg, SH-201, or SH-01. Which do you guys think is the best for someone new?
A software synth and an midi controller. Download FL Studios, it comes with a selection of different types of synths built in, I like Sytrus personally.
You will spend a lot of money on a synth and you won't get great variety and control, look at software synths, they have SO MUCH.

Most VST plugs are programmed with the VST SDK, not built in drag and drop tools like this.

Can I use that with a mic input on my computer? I just want to test to see if I can get anything out of it by plugging in my guitar.

I agree with you, but not all the way. FL Studios is a great place to start, that's where I started. It will offer more flexibility as far as synth sounds may go, though that truly depends on how experienced you are with programming synthesizers.
On the other hand, hardware is much better for a literal hands-on experience, and I learned a LOT about synthesis by watching videos of hardware synths being programmed on Youtube.

Well, that isn't a synthesizer, it's a WYSIWYG synth making program, you make your own synthesizer. I have never tried, but I'm sure you can create your own guitar effects.

I'm just saying that FL Studios comes with a big range of synthesizers, of all types, and even comes with an editor like synthmaker. Fuck if I know how to use a sequencer, I'm not musical at all. Synthesizers are are more math and acoustics than music.

Anyone else own synthesizers and have mastered synthesis, but can't even play the keyboard?
lol

I'm the opposite. I really don't see the point in spending a lot of times making sounds. I'm more inclined to pick a preset and modify it slightly. Maybe I'll get more into the whole sound making aspect eventually.
Heh, I don't play keyboard, I just like to program sounds, but I can flesh out melodies and chords with my MIDI controller.
Anybody do any VST/VSTi programming? If so, do you have any recommendations on a good source to learn?
I have a Yamaha CS6x, and a Korg ES-1. Although the Korg is a step-sequencer, it has built in sampling and some effects.

I love tweaking knobs and parameters to get a totally cool and unique sound, like a complex soundscape or something.

Especially when you get a sound that compliments the rest and settles right into the mix. If I'm stuck, I always try new sounds, and that usually gets me going again.
If you're really into software synths, you should get an iPad, I got one back in august, Well worth it if you are just using it for music apps, I pretty much own a Korg MS-20 now, and an electribe, and lots of crazy FULL featured synths. I would much rather own an android app, but with lack of apps, I didn't think it was worth it.

800 dollars.
I dearly wish.
Can anyone recommend a cheap midi-controller keyboards that also has an instrument input?
As far as I know, that request doesn't make sense.

Midi is note data. It cannot pass over audio.

$450USD for a refurbished 16gb from Apple.

Still fuckloads of money. That does seem more reasonable though.

You want a midi controller which also acts as an audio interface?
I only know one which has this functionality, but it's not too cheap, and, well, I don't remember it's name.
Your best bet is to get an audio interface and midi controller separately, I wouldn't trust such an odd feature integration.

What he said. Its just expensive if I buy them seperately.

It's probably expensive even if you buy one which does both.
Its just expensive if I buy them seperately.
Did you read the part where he said "I only know one which has this functionality, but it's not too cheap".
You aren't likely to find anything and I assure you having a midi controller with a built in audio interface would not be cheaper. It is such a weird request.
I think you're really mixed up on something. If you're looking for a midi controller with a 1/4 inch out, you aren't going to find it. Why? Because a midi controller doesn't make music. Think of it like this. Sheet music is like midi data. It is not music, but it describes music. It says how loud to be, the tempo, how long to hold the notes, and so on. In order to turn the data on the sheet in the music you have to send it to something that can process that data, being a person or something that can interpret the data and can produce a sound. Most synths can process midi data, and most DAWs can as well.
If you aren't mixed up about that and still think you have a legitimate request, then explain your intended setup and why you need it.
Oh and, you could get, say, a microkorg XL. It has midi capabilities, a audio input, and it's a synthesizer. But it's kinda expensive.
Actually, I've found the Roland Edirol PCR-1, it's a midi controller with a built in USB audio interface (24bit/96KHz), and is quite cheap, around the $80 mark. However it's from 2004 (not that old actually) and uses RCA instead of TRS/TS.
They probably have a model with more keys or even a more recent keyboard. It looks a bit dodgy though, judging by the pics. You know, that cheap plastic feel.
What is the audio interface needed for? I don't quite get it.

For recording stuff. Pro "audio interface"(actually fancy name for sound card > Shitty Sound card
