so i'm going to start weight lifting, mostly upper body. i have no clue where to start. i bench around 70 pounds right now, pretty weak, but my friend says he's going to help me. i don't want a big weight-lifting routine yet, just some advice on where to start and how often to exercise.
according to my dad in his bodybuilding days he had a 60 inch chest and 32 waist and 24 arms jesus christ even if he's fudging the numbers a bit jesus christ :ohdear: [editline]21st October 2010[/editline] i got my genetics from my mom's side of the family unfortunately
OK so I just looked it up and: your dad's arms were 2-3 Inches bigger than Arnold's your dad's chest was 3 inches bigger than Arnold's and your dad's waist was 2 inches smaller than Arnold's and Arnold took roids oh and he won some thing called mr olympia or something idk lol seriously i call bullshit, sorry
don't just focus on upper body you'll regret it later, do everything and your muscles usually need anywhere from 24-48 hours to recover
okay. i started bench pressing and such today, and that's about all i've done so far. any advice for when i hit the weight room tomorrow?
okay. i started bench pressing and such today, and that's about all i've done so far. any advice for when i hit the weight room tomorrow?
stretch out before working out, and do a proper warm up on each exercise always do proper range of motion and do the exercise properly, it doesn't matter if you can only bench 70 pounds all the way down it's much better than benching 135 1/3rd of the way down [editline]21st October 2010[/editline]
i asked about the arnold thing too, but he seems pretty confident in his numbers, and everyone says he was massive and basically lived in the gym, but i do agree with you that's why i said the thing about fudging the numbers before lol
lol well I can believe he's big but i'm 99% sure all his numbers are wayyyy too good to be true, but you never know still he was probably pretty big, is he still carrying some of the muscle or did he lose it all?
he got really sick a bit after i was born, and had to stop working out, so he's a bit fat now, but he still has a massive back and pretty big arms
Wrestling practice has become at a halt, so we're in the weight room a lot. I can't bench press at all due to the fact that my left arm has significantly twice as much muscle than my right. Let me put it this way. Left Arm can life 20+ lbs, while the right can only do a little more than 15 lbs.

great thread by the way and good job keeping it going
okay, one last question here. is working out every weekday, but working different muscle groups each day a good idea?
okay, one last question here. is working out every weekday, but working different muscle groups each day a good idea?
Probably not if you're a beginner, but to be honest each person can handle things differently so I can't say for sure that this applies to everyone. I workout every weekday right now and I'm okay with it, but when I started out I don't think I would take it that well. Just try working out every second day and give your body some rest- and if you want to do something on the rest days just do some cardio or abs or something. [editline]21st October 2010[/editline] Oh and just a question for everyone that does squats here... How far do you guys go down when you do them? I only go to parallel, but my friend who was doing 400 pounds today actually went BELOW parallel which I've never seen before with that much weight. [editline]21st October 2010[/editline] guys how much should I keep bulking to? I'm thinking of stopping at 165 but I might keep going with it...
i don't recommend going too much lower than parallel because although you have more range of motion if you go lower it can be bad for your knees.
i don't recommend going too much lower than parallel because although you have more range of motion if you go lower it can be bad for your knees.
that's exactly what I told my friend! [editline]21st October 2010[/editline] Watching 2 documentaties on steroids right now, one's "bigger stronger faster" and the other is a national geographic one. I think it's a pretty interesting topic since I recently found out such a high percentage of people that workout in America use steroids, it's ridiculous. I would never do them
On the topic of leg work outs. I always get really sick (like a stomach sickness) doing them. I'm typically able to push through but i was wondering if anyone else feels this and if they have a possible solution.
On the topic of leg work outs. I always get really sick (like a stomach sickness) doing them. I'm typically able to push through but i was wondering if anyone else feels this and if they have a possible solution.
I get this sometimes when doing large compound exercises, I think (NOTE=THINK, JUST MY GUESS) that since they get the blood flowing to your muscles even more than normal workouts (i.e. squats vs curls) since they use such large muscles, like legs in your case, the blood flows away from the stomach and if you have any food left to digest it is not properly digesting and MAYBE that's what's happening. Again, just a guess.
That seems feasible. I try not to eat too much before my leg work out days, though. Maybe it's just the fact that it is so strenuous. I don't know, i'm not a doctor
Awesome a weight lifting thread, I can help anyone with questions ^^. I have a question first though. I have worked out for about 2 1/2 years thus far and my pecs are by far my strongest muscle but I was just wondering do I have just a certain type of shape of pec or is it fat because when I flex, they make a diamond shape. I am not sure if I need to burn the fat to make my chest much more square or not, thanks. I can help with questions now ^^.

i had leg work out today and i allowed more time for me to digest. I felt less sick. Lunges and deadlifts made me feel a little queasy but overall it went well.
excercises for a 14 year old? I'm trying 50 ab crunches, 30 sit ups and 30 shoulder-elbow-dumbbell thingies after I've finished eating. What else can I do?
I play college football for Tennessee, my max bench for one is 275 pounds. Top that.
I've been weightlifting for 2 months and I've only gained 3 pounds :'((
I wouldn't suggest doing sit-ups as they are apparently bad for your lower back
are you serious
I used to do 25 pull-ups a set, at 140 pounds. Now I'm not sure how much I weigh but I can only really get up to about 12-13
