I enjoy that sense of fear when playing a game like Amnesia (it means it's good). The last time I got really creeped out playing a game was Silent Hill 2 while wandering through Brookhaven Hospital.

Ive never actually played amnesia, but penumbra was quite frightening for a while

After I figured out that dogs could easily be killed with a pickaxe, and IMO are the most common enemies (only other option would be spiders), the game just became boring. Before that is a different story though...

Ive heard much about amnesia, and its sounding pretty much like penumbra (gameplay wise) but it seems much more frightening.

As for the "manning up" part, I cant give you more advice (other than if you want to waste your money and not play it at all) than to just remember that its only a game.
