On a serious note, why is it important that music requires talent?
It's not. What's important is that the listener has an emotional connection to the music, whether that's modern pop or classical. The reason people say X is shit or Y is awful is because they don't connect to it, so of course they won't derive enjoyment from it. Sure, Bartok spent a hell of a lot more time and effort perfecting his pianistic and compositional abilities than, say, Taylor Swift or Nicki Minaj, but that's because those abilities mattered to him. He had enormous talent, but all the talent in the world won't grab the attention of people who don't like Bartok.
I don't even want to know what the people that listen to this trash are like.
a helluva lot better than you
Nicki blinks a lot.
Why don't you get flashbacks from a good movie instead? [editline]10th October 2012[/editline] "S is for the simplety E is for the ecstasy X is just to mark the spot 'Cause that's the one you really want Yes, sex is always the answer, it's never a question 'Cause the answer's yes, oh the answer's yes Not just a suggestion, if you ask a question Then it's always yes, yeah" Words to live by.
Yeah you go ahead and live by those words.
I thought you'd all appreciate these.

Why the fuck is it if someone like the stones they have to hate Minaj or vice versa. I mean of course this isn't always the case but with people like zydos and cathedral pissing about it's a hard feeling to shake. I mean fuck I honestly like any song that I think is good, doesn't matter what generation it's from but I hear so fucking often people say shit like "Who the hell listens to them! They're so old!" or "People theses days don't know real music like ACDC" it pisses me off beyond belief it's like they just wont give music a try because of the year it was made.

A million times this. I grew up listening to nothing but AC/DC, Pink Floyd, and Skynyrd. That's all that plays in the bars around here. I transitioned into the newer music pretty easily and enjoy it all. I mean, Nicki Minaj isn't high up on my list of things I'll listen to, but I don't bag her fans. This "the classics" vs "the new age" shit is annoying as hell.
2CHAYNZZZ
Can someone tell me what this means. Because all the swag idiots in my school keep randomly shouting this.
Honestly she's just a whore that can talk fast with mild pitch changes. She wouldn't be this popular if she wasn't a woman, and a woman with a massive ass at that. [editline]9th October 2012[/editline] inb4 opinions
lmao. are you seriously saying she's just popular because she's a woman.
That's honestly how most female music stars make it.
That's honestly how most female music stars make it.
Bullshit
That's honestly how most female music stars make it.
yup you're right. it's not that people enjoy their music, but that they're women. women obviously have an advantage in the music industry.
You're the exact kind of hipster fuckwit that I hate.
hipsters love nicki minaj

If I rhymed without any beat and tone would it be music? If I'd rhyme changing tone would it be music? If I tapped my foot on the floor and rhyme and change intonation would it be music? Minaj is just 1 step away from this. It's barely music. And no I don't think that all music that I dislike is bad. Like I said, I don't like Bjork but I realize her music is good. And nothing stops you from enjoying music that's bad. I like kebab but it's shit food.
yeah and music being bad doesn't mean anything you'd probably think the raincoats suck because they sing out of tune and can't play their instruments at all yet i get a huge kick out of it, the same applies to nicki minaj, harsh noise, or bjork.

I'm pretty sure there's a definite beat there and I've heard great music with so much more minimalism in the song than this one. also rhyming without beat and tone is music. sound is music.

What I'm saying is. Liking/disliking music and thinking the music is good/bad is a separate thing. And saying "sound is music" you're basically saying that everything is music. Even my dog's farts. I disagree with that.
no you just call them separate things, it doesn't really change the fact that it's your own interpretation like calling kebab shit food is non-sense. maybe you've had shitty kebab but calling kebab shit food is just totally ignorant what you like and consider bad music is still your own personal perspective that has no objective meaning whatsoever. Maybe I should have been more precise. But it's beside the point. There are things that are objectively bad but you or I can still enjoy them. It's not my personal perspective. Someone can be really bad at playing guitar or singing can't he? It's going to be bad. Now whether you're going to enjoy it or not is a completely different matter. [editline]11th October 2012[/editline]
sure dog farts could be music you'd have to debate its merit separately but it's music
Brb gotta make some calls about my dog's music career.

please tell me how to objectively judge this. what rubric would i use? how would i extrapolate my results in a way that accurately communicates how good or bad it is?
Brb gotta make some calls about my dog's music career.
k in the real world music /= career
facepunch please never discuss music again jesus christ

whatever it is this whole argument is accomplishing its introducing me to some neat shit
Fucking knew you'd go with some electronic experimental/abstract and go "well durr how do you objectively say this is good?" This? I don't really know. But Minaj's music is "singing" plus beat. We can objectively say whether she's good at singing or not do we? Or we can determine how well the beat is made, how well it fits with the vocal. Whether it's just a 3 second loop that doesn't change or not.
This thread is hilarious, why are people trying to prove that this is bad music it's all about opinion. There is no such as thing bad music it is all opinions.
nevermind i misunderstood i think
k you didn't really answer the question if we can judge music objectively then you should be able to judge that snippet of music if you can't then you've proven that any judgement of music is based on perspective and understanding of said music. Nicki Minaj is less abstract so you have something to compare it to which gives context to your perspective, IE "it sounds bad because i think this sounds good and it doesn't sound like this".
