looker, or "A Facebook App I Wrote Since I've Been Single For About 3 Years and I Hate It"

Can you please sum up the differences between this and "compare hotness" app, when it's at "friends only" settings?

Due to the observed confusion over looker and it's apps interested, compare, and hot or not, I'll be redesigning the application to introduce the user to how the app works, and what it does.

This is a demonstration image of looker in action. The app I'm using in looker is called interested. You have a friends wall, you click on a friend, and it tells interested you like them. If they like you back, one of the two of you is told. If they don't like you or you don't like them, nothing happens.
The currently is no "compare hotness" app (which would be the compare app). What you're seeing is interested, not compare or hot or not.
You're very very interested, it seems.

Guess it has settings for detecting the "interested in" fields in your info?

Exactly, in fact that's all the information I ask for when you use looker, and that's just so I can filter the friends list.
I was thinking about removing this requirement in the even you're a closet homosexual or something.

Looks like I need to commit more information than I really feel like, even though they'd have the information by using Facebook.
The design is horrible. Too many shadows.

Design something better.

The site is currently broken while I attempt to migrate the apps to a different location per app.

You can watch me design stuff if you want. I'm programming on the side as well.
Design something better.
Just trying to help, learn to take some criticism. That being said it wouldn't be hard to design something better.
Then do it.
Pretty interesting idea, I'm sure it will get popular. Best of luck to you.

Thanks man.

Also PieClock, I'm legitimately sorry for reacting that way, but I'm not primarily a graphic designer, so I wouldn't know where to begin.

Oh snap, Hexxeh came in.
[editline]1st March 2011[/editline]
I'm thinking about having a demo version of each app where you don't need to log in to see what the app is like.
This way you know what you're getting when you start using the app. I don't know why, but that would personally make me feel a lot better before agreeing to give any information of mine to an application.
[editline]1st March 2011[/editline]
Interested is back online, but not on the front page. The front page will link to it.
http://labs.andrewmcwatters.com/looker/interested/ If you're impatient or want to go back to it.
Looks original...

1/3 original, 2/3 copied.

Touched it up with some gradient at the top. Idk. Gotta filled in the three boxes with the apps.

Ah, I see, so the whole point of it is to let friends you like know you like them but only if they like you too, so that way if you like someone but you're afraid to tell her and lose her, you can use this app, and then only if she likes you back she'll know. That actually sounds pretty cool, but too bad most of my female friends will probably never hear of it, so it'll be pretty much a waste of time to "like" those that I like since they'll never hear of it. I'll try to spread it though and if it gets around maybe I'll use it.

I have to write code to invite your friends to use it. I don't want word of mouth to be entirely dependent on people alone, but actually I think if you tell people directly rather than through emotionless code, then it means a billion times more.
Thanks for helping me get it out there.

Front page is nearly done. The individual apps now have links to them.

I'm not going to go design your site for you to prove a point, but here. I'm not the best designer but I do know what I'm talking about when I say that shoving a shadow on every <div> tag is not the answer to a good design. I mean, you don't need to be a pro designer to keep yourself from applying a shadow to something - even your favicon is a shadow.
Also PieClock, I'm legitimately sorry for reacting that way, but I'm not primarily a graphic designer, so I wouldn't know where to begin.
It's cool, again, I'm just trying to help.
I wasn't really fond of that screenshot. It looked pretty 1px-glow-1px-stroke generic to me. There's one align issue as well up top.
I just don't like generic looking things, and this is just my thing, it may be a mess, but it's my mess.
I have a terrible self image and no matter who tells me how "hot" or "cute" I am, which for whatever ridiculous reason I get a lot, I don't believe it. It's a mental disorder... a very common one too. It just strikes those with a low self-esteem even harder.
Same thing with me, except I'm genuinely ugly
I could counter with, "putting outlining on everything isn't a solution to design", but I'm not aiming to start anything.
Gradients, 1px glow w/ 1px stroke, and all that sort of thing are just way too generic to me. It's not unique, and I've seen it a billion times before. The fact that templates for various things use it alone in inappropriate places just makes me gag.
Anyway, it's all a matter of opinion.
Keep that coding up!
OK, I just want to clear a question up. When this is all done, when you click someone and it shows the heart, does it instantly notify the other person that I clicked them, or does it only notify them if we both clicked each other?
I think the thing that will make this explode is being able to actually rank your friends. The ranking app will work as a "hot or not" of sorts. I think that can be launched tomorrow.
Keep that coding up!
Will do!
OK, I just want to clear a question up. When this is all done, when you click someone and it shows the heart, does it instantly notify the other person that I clicked them, or does it only notify them if we both clicked each other?
No, it only notifies one of you by random gamble if you both clicked each other. It's not instantaneous though. This is to prevent app abuse.
[editline]1st March 2011[/editline]
I need some feedback guys, can you help me out?
http://labs.andrewmcwatters.com/looker/
Check out the front page. Is the info on Interested crystal clear?
[editline]1st March 2011[/editline]
Even if it is or isn't, when you start Interested, I'll have it explained again with images.
The information on 'Interested' explains it well enough for me.
An attention whore? Really? I barely have any pictures on my facebook because of my low self image. At parties/gatherings/whatever, I refuse getting my picture taken. Attention whores do the complete opposite.
I like staying in the shadows unnoticed. I fucking hate praise and shit like that more than "thanks" or "that's pretty cool."
I hate it when people stare at me, I fucking hate it when girls check me out. I fucking hate all that bullshit. It's annoying. Stop fucking looking at me.
You're just a moron who thinks he has me "figured out" when in reality you don't know shit.
Are you autistic or something? That's just weird
Are you autistic or something? That's just weird
Thanks for quoting him, that was a great laugh.

Yes, terrifying misunderstanding, indeed.
This obviously doesn't work from a realistic point of view(at least, by my understanding, I could be horrifically wrong), but from the sheer effort of programming and time spent, I commend you, good sir. Have a heart.
Well, from a Facepuncher's point of view, of course it doesn't work, but that's because there's no one that likes them.
Well, from a Facepuncher's point of view, of course it doesn't work, but that's because there's no one that likes them.
I'm trying to think of a response to this, but all I can think of is "Dear God I'm horribly wrong and completely misunderstood what this app is for".
Now, I understand and I think it's a pretty damn interesting idea.
not something I use, but i know a shit house ton of people who will use it.
Its a good idea cause it exploits the niche of the mass majority that want to be rated and ranked.
You stole my idea I am obliged to sue you.
[editline]2nd March 2011[/editline]
What if someone likes everyone on their friends list so they get notified if anyone likes them back?
