Hate to tell you, but evolution is more about looking about for the good of the species, having to spend our resources to keep somebody alive who will never be able to give that much back, is moving in the opposite direction from what evolution says is right. And since we obviously don't know what, if anything, somebody will contribute to society at the time of their birth, evolution would say we should assume that because this person is gravely deformed, they won't be able to give back what we gave to them.

But our instincts aren't like that. It's more helpful to evolution if your are willing to do anything to preserve the life of your offspring. So what if a few defective children have resources wasted on them, its not like all of humanity is pouring in all of our resources in, the world isn't stopping for this kid, just a few people.
Basically, the humans who had parents with predisposition to protecting them unconditionally were able to survive long enough to reproduce.

Unless im mistaken but a 17 year old boy who has been in a bed for his whole life since birth. I saw this a show on a TV channel once. I thought why didn't the career/mother just have him put down when he was born instead wasting the rest of their lives looking after a 'vegetable'. To top it off, one Easter he had a vomited in his bed about 17 times and the career had to change his sheets 17 times instead of having fun with her family. Millions of dollars are wasted on this when these 'vegetables' wont ever be able to do anything.

Evolution isn't about the good of the species.
It's about your genes using you as a means to keep themselves alive. The reason we have the desire to help others when they are in need is that when humans were evolving, the small "tribes" we would have been grouped in would have shared the same ancestors and would have bred within their own tribe mostly. This means that we evolved a desire to help them because in those times in which we lived in tribal setups, the other humans around would have been likely to share the same genes.
