It was indeed odd behavior from him....He always looks so serious in pictures.
Yeah, especially with all his hardcore "Rites of Spring" type stuff.
I have troubles understanding how anyone can not see the Baroque or Romantic period as the best ones, the classical period is extremely boring, I never quite got into impressionism and the serialism stuff doesn't seem to lead anywhere... Although Webern is a pretty cool guy
Romanticism and neo-Romanticism are most certainly my favourite eras of music. Whilst I can understand why people may like impressionism, and some extremes of 20th Century style, I really don't understand how some of it can be classified as "music". As for baroque - it's very pleasing to play and some composers are excellent. There are, however, many baroque pieces that quickly become boring due to being so generic in nature. But meh, that's just my opinion.
Yeah, especially with all his hardcore "Rites of Spring" type stuff.
rites of spring is god damn brutal. love it
I never could get into Stravinsky. His Piano Rag Music and sonata are alright, but stuff like Petrouchka and The Rite just never spoke to me.
The Rites of Spring is pretty epic. I am however haunted by that time I had a taster day with the National Youth Orchestra... we spent the morning dancing to that 3/4, 3/4, 2/4 accented passage. Was quite surreal.
Those are beautiful. Right now I'm really into modern classical music, like Yann Tiersen. He composes soundtracks a lot, I think. I'm glad there's finally a classical music thread.
I thought I was the only person on facepunch to even know of yann tiersen, but he's not classical.
Nothing wrong with disliking Serialism. I've just always been drawn to the richness of tone in it. Boulez is a bit of a mouthful, yes. Have you ever listened to Elliot Carter? In particular I'd recomend 'Soundings for piano and orchestra'. All of Elliot Carter's music has a Serialist sound to it, but none of it actually is.
Just listened to it now and I really like it, thanks for the recommendation!
