one or two cans of energy drink? heart attack ahoy
wouldnt that be expensive as fuck too
We have the same 32mg/100mL limits here, and at those levels, one small can of an energy drink contains less caffeine than a normal coffee, so no, that's faaaaaaaaaaaaar from the possibility of causing a heart attack, you'll get a bit hyperactive at most.
Energy drinks themselves are unhealthy due to the insane amounts of sugar, but what about caffeine? It seems like everyone here supports the idea that it's unhealthy for your cardiovascular system, but I've also heard it said in the past that it prevents cardiovascular disease. Obviously if you've got a preexisting condition caffeine could agitate that, but on it's own does it really have negative cardiovascular effects?

You don't need excessive amounts of caffeine for it to be bad for you. Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor (i.e it makes your bloodvessels contract) when your bloodvessels contract, your bloodpressure spikes, this puts a lot of strain on the heart as it has to pump significantly harder to move the same amount of blood around your system, in doing so the heart muscle will begin to grow which in turn makes it harder for the heart to pump blood efficiently, not by a significant amount, but if you're constantly buzzing on caffeine it'll take its toll in the long run. Having said that, caffeine is known to have a positive effect on the heart muscles as it increases bloodflow to the heart, which makes our bodies able to more efficiently get rid of oxidized compounds in the cells of the heart. Like most other people in this thread have said, nearly everything is fine in moderation (with obvious exceptions), but the problem with energy drinks is that most people don't even realise just how much caffeine they're putting in their systems, especially if they drink multiple cans per day. Additionally, underlying cardiovascular diseases put you at risk of having a fatal heart infarction, and again, most people don't know whether or not they have those problems, a single faulty valve could be the end of you if your heart starts beating irregularly due to caffeine intoxication. I'm not trying to say that caffeine is unequivocally bad for you, but it should not be consumed in large quantities, and most people would probably be a lot better off if they took some days per week where they didn't drink coffee or caffeinated drinks as this builds up a tolerance, which makes it necessary to consume more and more caffeine to experience the positive effects from it. Make no mistake, coffee is a psychoactive stimulant, and as such, it is entirely possible to get addicted to it. In fact, caffeine withdrawal can be as bad as any other kind of physical withdrawal. The point isn't that caffeine is bad for you in and of itself, it's that a lot of people consume way too much of it. Personally, I've never felt the need, and it actually baffles me that 18-year olds feel the need for it to get through a day at school.
In the worst days I drank about 8 cans per day but I really needed it after 10 hours or so working on a Festival or whatever.
shitting christ how are you still alive
Also the whole time watching the video, all I could think was "Well no shit ingesting large amounts of caffeine has negative effects" And the high amount of sugar in these drinks makes perfect sense, they're called energy drinks for a reason and aren't meant as a substitute for drinking water.
I'll just stick to drinking 1-2 cups of coffee a day, thank you very much. Although a half liter bottle of energy drink does come in handy if I need to stay up all night for some reason, I just drink it in parts every couple hours and it works great.
I've never drank an energy drink, and I barely even drink coffee anymore. I remember seeing a kid in my school who'd have a Monster Drink every day or two at school. Kid looked so goddamn unhealthy it probably turned me off energy drinks for the rest of my life.
Still, nothing necessarily wrong with having one if you need the caffeine spike now and again, but the intake I've seen people mention in this thread is just scary.
Wow. I've always known that energy drinks aren't good for you but I didn't realise that they were THAT unhealthy. I maybe have 1 to 4 cans a day. Sometimes though I get sick of it and take a break for week or so. I don't drink them because I feel like I can't function without caffine. I just like the taste of monster a lot! Looking at all this now though I might seriously cut back altogether from Energy Drinks before it fucks me up.
i dink ness
This vid is fuck useless, it actually shows no correlation between the facts it spews out. Quoting meaningless stats and implying that energy drinks cause x y z doesn't mean jack.
That video is a load of rubbish. I also find the white knights in this thread who think caffeine is a horrible drug that kills people disturbing. It's a good thing if you realize what it does and drink it in moderation and only when you need it. The thing people should be worried about is the amount of fags these kids smoke at their age not what energy drinks they drink.

except the video is based off of credible scientific sources and your opinion is based off of what you just thought up
The only reason I drink Monster is because of the taste. I drink atleast 1 can per day and I would drink it even if it was only soda. Coffeine hasn't got any effects on me, or atleast none that would be noticeable sadly.

Caffeine is wonderful, not when it's in energy drinks with that massive amount of sugar and bad stuff.

it got posted there? where
A few years ago I drank Red Bull a lot because it advertised that it was rich in taurine, which I thought was the almighty energy buff chemical.
About a year later: "Hmm, Red BULL, taurine? Taurus + Urine = Taurine OF COURSE JESUS CHRIST I DRANK BULL PISS HOLY SHIT!"
Nowadays, I consume energy drinks rather sparingly, I'm much more of a coffee and cola person now.
And here I am with a single can of soda every week, but more for the taste than the caffeine.
I used to drink Red Bull in a few of my gaming sessions and it made me quite jittery.
I drink lots of energy drinks but I never feel more or less energetic. I do however love the taste of Monster.
yerba mate bitches

I drink about 3 cups a day at age 19. Started every morning with a cup of coffee with very little cream and sugar since last year. I didn't do this for the energy, i simple drank it every morning because juice is too sweet for me in the morning, and coffee can wake me up a bit to a more attentive level. I started on this daily morning ritual starting last school year and that year of school was my most effective one yet with marked improved test scores, less inattentiveness, more focus, and better overall performance.
Pretty much what i'm saying here is that for me, increasing my coffee intake has had significantly good results for me and that's not limited to just performance in school but in also physical results. So scientifically caffeine has effects that are proved to be caused by the intake of it, but it also depends on the individual person as well.
3 cups of coffee a day is seriously not good for your body.
Two max, in my opinion. One in the morning, one at lunch. I stopped drinking coffee a long time ago, though.
Caffine is totally harmless in controlled doses, and actually can be benficial, as long as you don't develop a severe enough addiction to it to where you rely on it and you get withdrawl if you don't have it. Then it gets to the point where you can have bad long term health sideeffects, and also bad short term ones (massive headaches when you dont have caffine, etc).
I drink about 1 thing of coffee a day, and I limit myself to just that. I do it mostly for the taste/pleasure of it, but I also do it to wake me up a bit, and keep me alert. Which is why I like to have it usually around 3-6pm, as me being a morning person predominantly, I start getting lazier once late afternoon rolls around.
I'm totally addicted because I'll have my one thing of coffee a day if I can manage, but I don't depend on it. When I don't have coffee, I don't start craving it, and I don't have any adverse side affects (being tired, headaches, etc). I know if I really amped up my coffee intake per day (such as several cups of coffee) I could easily get addicted/reliant on it to the point that it can cause long term issues.
Basically moral of the story is caffine is fine as long as you don't overdo daily amounts. It's the same with anything - the only downside to caffine is that it's much "easier" to overdo it if you are stupid and have no self control, because of the "caffine" high you can get from it, plus feeling like you need to be alert 24/7.
I used to be able to drink energy drinks left and right, but now if I so much as sip one I pretty much go into cardiac arrest.
I stopped listening when he talked about cannabis dependance, there's no physical addiction of cannabis, only psychological(In very few cases).
I stopped listening when he talked about cannabis dependance, there's no physical addiction of cannabis, only psychological(In very few cases).
there isn't a strict demarcation between the two
if you're actually being truthful and not just saying "I stopped listening when X" for hyperbole, you should really watch the rest of it, c0nc0rdance is a really smart guy that knows how to explain shit.
I drink energy drinks probably once a year, whenever my friend and I go to Quake Con we drink BAWLS and Monsters. Don't enjoy the taste of Monsters, but there's one flavor of Bawls that's scrumptious. But yeah, they make me feel really jittery and kind of nauseous.
yerba mate bitches
Fuck yeah. I stopped with regular energy drinks and lots of coffee and switched to yerba mate as my regular beverage about 2 years ago.
How did you come to discover it yourself sir? Do you find it as pleasant as I?
I find it to have a far more delightful buzz than the aforementioned drinks with no big crash and a nice muscle relaxing feeling/body high sometimes also
I'm surprised there haven't been attempts to incorporate it into an energy drink...
This video is full of bias
'High risk behaviour, such as marijuana use'
this guy has no idea what he's talking about, the only thing he's saying is that caffeine is bad.
[editline]20th August 2012[/editline]
how the fuck is marijuana behaviour high risk?
High risk of going to burger king at middle of the night, if that
