• Are Energy Drinks Safe?

I drink rockstar just because I love the taste. Sweet, then bitter. Doesn't really have any "energy" boosting effect as far as I know, I can go to sleep right after drinking one.
This video is full of bias 'High risk behaviour, such as marijuana use' this guy has no idea what he's talking about, the only thing he's saying is that caffeine is bad. [editline]20th August 2012[/editline] how the fuck is marijuana behaviour high risk? High risk of going to burger king at middle of the night, if that
you're putting carcinogens in your lungs [editline]20th August 2012[/editline] plus it can impair your judgement in a similar way that alcohol does. the oft-cited "marijuana has never been the cause of any death" factoid is misleading because causes of death can have many contributing factors that don't make it onto coroner's reports, which potentially including marijuana intoxication i'm aware that marijuana is orders of magnitude less harmful than say, alcohol, but to say it's harmless is to privilege saying nice things about marijuana above saying accurate things.

I saw a 9 year old boy wearing a Monster hat and Jack Daniel's T-shirt drinking a massive can of Monster outside of the grocery store. His parents have some explaining to do.
There is no such thing as marijuana intoxication, to die from smoking marijuana you would have to smoke tons of weed in a small time span, and the thc poisoning would be the least of your concerns
I meant "marijuana intoxication" as in "under the intoxicating effect of marijuana" aka being high. I'm well aware that dying purely because you smoked too much weed at once would require the planets to align, I'm talking about the bad shit that can result from doing stupid shit while high.

I'm well aware that dying purely because you smoked too much weed at once would require the planets to align, I'm talking about the bad shit that can result from doing stupid shit while high.
The worst thing I've ever seen someone do while high on weed was obsessively clean the kitchen where I work at Getting high on weed is not high-risk behavior at all. There's a higher risk behavior behind smoking cigarettes and alchohol than weed. The only thing "risky" about weed is the fact that it is technically illegal, which you could argue the video was trying to make a point that high energy drink users lead to high risk behavior such as illegal drug use. But then why didn't he mention drugs that are actually high risk to use and involve yourself in (cocaine, for example)? Because there honestly isn't any correlation between drug use and energy drinks, it was just a bullshit point he tried to make that reflects his bias. The only correlation is that males in X age group tend to smoke more pot than males in Y age group, and those age groups happen to also correlate in energy drink consumption. Correlation =/= causation The thing I hate about this video is that I expected some eye opening study on long term effects of energy drink consumption, etc. Instead all it was, was mostly regurgitating various facts on caffinee that everyone already knows, making up bullshit claims on energy drink users/usage, and just pulling in various random bits of information involving energy drinks instead of actually making some eye opening statement. The most "interesting" bit of information in that whole video that wasn't total bias/bullshit was the facts about taurine/etc (aka that stuff being bullshit filler that does nothing). He didn't really have any real claims and studies to make on the subject, mostly just random facts about energy drinks presented in a tone that suggests he's making groundbreaking statements. And I don't even like energy drinks at all, and I think they are total bullshit (if I want energy for the sake of energy, I'd rather have it in a form that doesn't give me 80 grams of sugar in one can).
I'm sure I will be accused of all sorts of bias or fear mongering, but for the record, the views expressed, while they align with my own, are the views of the experts at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and UT-Houston School of Medicine.
he knows it's not groundbreaking statements, he's saying things that are utterly banal because settled science is still beautiful
I don't think I've had a energy drink in my whole life, soda and coffee yes, but never a energy drink like monster, amp, redbull, etc.
The last time I drank a can of monster was about a year ago when I got this weird pain feeling in both my heart and my head. It felt like that moment when you come out of a hot bath and you feel really dizzy as hell. as well as being hot. I stopped and I can safely say I will never touch it again. its not worth drinking it. there is no reason to drink it. especially kids. when I was a kid all I had was Coke/Mountain Dew/Pepsi/Dr. Pepper I know it was bad for me, but fuck, its safer then drinking Monster/Red bull etc.
I drank energy drinks in middle school (monster) only because everyone else did and it made you cool. I hate the things and the only one I actually like the taste of partially is Red Bull. If I need to wake up, I go with coffee. [editline]21st August 2012[/editline]
3 cups of coffee a day is seriously not good for your body. Two max, in my opinion. One in the morning, one at lunch. I stopped drinking coffee a long time ago, though.
It's not bad for your body. Where did you get that?
I actually have a serious caffeine addiction. I only drink Red Bull Vodkas when I go out (which is REALLY bad for you), and EVERY morning I need an Amp before going to work. It's really a problem... if I don't have it in the morning I feel absolutely terrible. Considering getting actual help.

Then limit yourself to one thing a day After a while you'll no longer have a dependancy on it, though you'll probably still be addicted in the sense that you'll want to have one every day if its not an issue. After a while you'll be able to easily just not have it though.
i have never had an energy drink before
No bro energy drinks are the cool teenager's drink and you are cooler if you drink it because YOLO.
This right here is why I hate the people on FP sometimes. That is just an ignorant comment that makes you feel better about yourself.

Usually these are the brands I used to consume: I tried to abruptly cut off all caffeine intake a few weeks ago, and was hit with pounding headaches and by far the worst depression I've ever experienced. It was kind of scary because I've never had such serious bouts of depression. Now I've decided I won't quit caffeine entirely but to gradually cut back and consume it at NOT the ridiculous levels it was previously. Now I only drink one of those white sugar free ones every other day, each has about 80mg of caffeine. I can't really go after the energy drinks with sugar, partly because while I don't personally have diabetes, my family has a history of it on both sides. Also, I just find energy drinks with sugar to have a very unpleasant taste.
Relentless burns a hole through my bladder, but I like the taste. Wish it wasn't 500ml though. I only have like <10 a year though.
Relentless burns a hole through my bladder, but I like the taste. Wish it wasn't 500ml though. I only have like <10 a year though.
Monster is a lot lighter on the stomach and bladder from my experience.

I drink one or two a day and treat it as my coffee. I often drink one when I'm about to do some programming. Coffee for me has too much of an effect and I don't really like the taste of it either. I think the limit on caffeine in energy drinks here are 32mg per 100ml. The biggest can you can get here is 500ml, so the limit is 160mg.
one or two cans of energy drink? heart attack ahoy wouldnt that be expensive as fuck too
320mg is equivalent to about three cups of coffee wow, heart attack from three cups of coffee. the caffeine's not gonna kill you, and, although depending on the brand, you're still less likely to guzzle more sugar than by downing that 0.5 l bottle of soda. [editline]21st August 2012[/editline]
Monster is a lot lighter on the stomach and bladder from my experience.
In the end, it only depends on how caffeine tolerant you are, really. Someone who already drinks a cup or more of coffee a day won't get any caffeine-related adverse effects if they change to energy drinks. Unless you're drinking caffeine into an empty stomach, and if you do that you're truly stupid or your stomach's made out of iron.
