if i wanted to describe how tall someone was or how big my member is, i would go for imperial because of its relate-ability to the human body and the ease of comprehension that comes with that.
To me, it's the other way around... IMHO it makes more sense to measure people's height and weight in meters and kilograms, respectively... For instance, I'm 1.74m and I weight 88kg, but I had to memorize the numbers "5'7"" and "194Lbs", just because of you Americans ¬¬ Not that I have a problem memorizing numbers, but I'm just saying
my member is 139700000 nm long :smug:
-snip- [editline]08:19PM[/editline]
my member is 139700000 nm long :smug:
You measure your dick in Milimeters? :v:
I support our conversion to metric under the condition that miles be kept around. "I would walk 805 kilometers" just doesn't sound the same
-snip- [editline]08:19PM[/editline] You measure your dick in Milimeters? :v:
He said nanometers
To everyone with the education/basic understanding of it argument... It's taught in school and has been since the 90's(mostly). And like my predecessors have stated, its not a hard system to learn, unlike the piece of shit Imperial system.
the metric system is cool and all, but why the hell is the metre defined as some incredibly arbitrary fraction based on light? distance in 1/299,792,458 of a second? seriously?
Then what did he base his zero around?

According to a journal article Fahrenheit wrote in 1724,[5] he based his scale on three reference points of temperature. The zero point is determined by placing the thermometer in brine: he used a mixture of ice, water, and ammonium chloride, a salt. This is a frigorific mixture which automatically stabilizes its temperature at 0 °F. A mixture of ice and water stabilizes, either freezing or melting at 32 °F,[6] though Fahrenheit did not use this point in defining his temperature scale. The third point, 96 degrees, was the level of the liquid in the thermometer when held in the mouth or under the armpit of his wife. Fahrenheit noted that, using this scale, mercury boils at around 600 degrees.
His reference points are stupid as shit. The U.S. should really switch over but the sheer cost and dumb people makes it quite hard. We still have to learn the metric in the U.S, but I still probably couldn't guesstimate quite a few of the units. Just the basics like meters or centimeters.
We're too good for your metric bullshit. :smug: No, I'm just kidding, I just personally feel more comfortable with Imperial for temperature(mainly because it seems a lot more precise than Metric) and length measurement, but not liquids, fuck Imperial liquid measurement.
well. it's up to you americans. the rest of the world will be finding it much easier and simpler using metric while you use an old system that dates not long after you became a country
It's older. Much, much older. It's basically a semi-modernization of systems that had been used in Europe since the middle ages. Back then nobody left their homelands so measurements varied from place to place. Also:
Also, there was a time when imperial was logical, the problem is most people don't know the logic, and no one's willing to do the research to figure it out.
A foot was originally determined by the length of whoever ruled the country's foot. That's totally logical.
We're too good for your metric bullshit. :smug: No, I'm just kidding, I just personally feel more comfortable with Imperial for temperature(mainly because it seems a lot more precise than Metric) and length measurement, but not liquids, fuck Imperial liquid measurement.
My friend always says this too. But I don't get why. Isn't that why there are decimal points? 1.5 meters, is simply, 1 meter, 5 centimeters. With imperial, 1.5 feet is 1 foot, 6 inches. I don't get how one is more precise than the other. Or does everyone have a different definition of "precise" from what I'm thinking of?
We'll switch to metric when you UK'ers switch to the Euro. We aren't the only stubborn people in the world.
"MULTIPLES OF 10? MADNESS!" [img_thumb]j[/img_thumb]
ITT: People who don't really understand the American government who think they can judge it
Just make it gradual. Start by actually teaching both systems equally in schools, and making road signs and such in both. Then, a decade later, start using metric as the default, with the old system afterwards. After 20 years, we could just drop the Imperial system. It'll be slow, but it'll be smooth. BTW, I'm an American. I'm actually trying to get myself to think in metric. So far I can only do it for temperature.
We learn both anyways.
Imperial system can suck my 15.3 cm cock.
Because America is a backwards Orwellian hellhole full of right-wing bigoted Fundies who think the Metric system is the work of Communism and Satan. Seriously.
In elementary school, I remember our math books having sections dedicated to both the imperial and metric system. I can remember thinking "wow, metric is so easy. 2 km = 2000 meters, how easy is that?" And then learning imperial. "2 miles to feet. Okay, 1 mile is 5285 feet....I think *checks book*. No, dammit its 5280. Then take 5280 times 2. So 2 times 0 is 0. 2 times 8 is 16. 2 times 2 is four-OH FUCK IT. This takes way too damn long!" That's pie compared to calculus, but still why spend time trying to calculate 2 times 5280 when 2 times 1000 takes literally a half a second to figure out.
ya i really wish we would just switch to metric, i hate all these random numbers, like the mile
While we're at measurements, how does Fahrenheit work? At 0 Celsius water freezes, but what happens at 0 Fahrenheit?
Its already frozen. The freezing point of water is 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
All you non Americans(and you Americans who want Metric) can take your Metric system and shove it.
Yeah, why use a system that actually makes sense(metric)? :downs: [editline]05:23PM[/editline] How many feet in 7 miles? Yeah, see, you had to actually calculate it.
I think Americans use the metric system a lot more than other countries think we do. The only activities I use the imperial system with is determining mph, sports (yards in football), temperature, and how many miles something is away from me. Everything else including most cooking, math, science, tools, computer parts, etc. is done by the metric system.
Keep MPH and I'm fine with Metric

Although sometimes we do use grams, but only for really light stuff.
Most people in the UK that I know use a mix of standard and metric including myself. I don't know anyone who sticks to just one of them.
You forgot weight. Everything is still in pounds. Although sometimes we do use grams, but only for really light stuff.
Yeah that too. I probably forgot a lot of things (imperial and metric), but I don't want to list them all.
Trust me, I live in the U.S. I know both systems well BUT America is full of retards who can't even do basic math. It angers me. It makes me sad too, for it sets a negative paradigm for internationals. You should see the school I am forced to go to, in all my classes (even AP ones) people are bugging me for answers and call me words I do not care to repeat. Mini-rant  GO METRIC!
Already there, also, with the cost thing, over the course of about 5 years, it could easily be done, THAT IS if the economy gets its shit together.
No. It's not that simple at all. EVERYTHING would have to be changed. All american retail packaging. Construction manuals. All gas stations, car manufactures information, road signs, textbooks, rulers, thermometers, heaters, air conditioners, everything would have to be changed, and that costs money. Alot of money. That money can be better spent towards something like education, and as time passes we get further and further into the hole. It sucks, and it sucks a lot. I hate imperial. I'd love to just switch on over to metric, but we as a country cannot.
Because America is a backwards Orwellian hellhole full of right-wing bigoted Fundies who think the Metric system is the work of Communism and Satan. Seriously.
Yeah every American hates the metric system and doesn't use it.
