Most American factories use the metric system. We're trying to push to use the metric system, but it takes a long time, you see. The reason America uses it is because it was industrialized before the metric system was invented. America didn't see the need to change systems because they, well, didn't see the need to change systems. There's no better system, although metric is easier to use and understand, America will still use the standard system for many years to come. I'm not saying they'll use it forever, it's just that Texas needs to stop the standard system printing in text books so future generations won't learn it, and learn metric. Burma still uses it because Burma was practically founded by the USA. (They used it in WW2). Seriously, people saying the US isn't doing anything to change to metric is ignorant. As I stated, most factories, universities, and colleges use metric. The only places/people that still utilitzes standard are grade school textbooks and people who grew up with it, as I did, although I'm leaning more twoards metric, because I like it.
Hell while we're at it why not go full out and have metric time?
http://zapatopi.net/metrictime/
This is awesome. I wonder if anyone makes watches with metric time?
The metric system IS easier to learn from the beginning than the other system.
That's a goddamn fact.
That's an opinion, idiot. You're biased because you grew up with it. That's like saying that English is a shitload easier to learn than Chinese, that's a fact. It's just not true.
the metric system can SUCK MY METER LONG DICK

I'm pretty sure knowing that 1km is 1000m is a hell of a lot easier to learn than 1mile is some random ass number of feet.

No it's not.
Growing up I was always taught metric, then the teachers would also be like "Ehhh, there is this crap with feet and yards but nobody cares." Really the only reason I know imperial is because road signs are in mph and thermometers are too. In school I never used imperial.
Imperial isn't really that hard though. Sure we should go to metric, but people who whine about it being "hard" are too stupid for it to matter anyways.

I grew up on the imperial system, and I find the metric system much easier and much more practical.
No it's not.
Learning a measurement system built around base 10 like EVERYTHING ELSE (except time) on this planet is not easier than learning a system with seemingly random conversion with unit names that are equally as nonconforming with each other?
YEP THAT SOUNDS LIKE AN OPINION :downs:
I grew up on the imperial system, and I find the metric system much easier and much more practical.
And some people don't. That's how your mind works, not everyone else's. It's an opinion, no matter what.
Most Americans just think its hard because they try to convert it to imperial units.
No they don't. Nobody thinks metric is hard (apparently some dude on the previous page does but whatever, suck my hyperbole). I get the feeling that people outside of the US think we grapple onto Imperial with white knuckles and love it. There are very few people that actually think Imperial should remain our system. Just the costs of updating our system would be insanely high and nobody is going to pay for that these days.

Are you fucking dense, that's an opinion, because NOT ALL people think metric is easier. Dumbass.
Most schools teach both, yet only certain jobs require it in the US, such as scientists and such. I have learned both, mainly because Chemistry and Physics class you needed to know it. Americans that go into a job that requires that knowledge learn it.
Just look at the US military. They use metric. No reason for the rest of the country not to.
This pretty much. By the way it's going though, almost seems like we're just waiting for the baby-boomer generation to either keel over or retire so no one'll be griping.[/no offense to anyone]

Give a study group of 500 kids imperial to learn, and the same for metric. Test them after x amount of teaching about what they learned a month after the teaching. I guarantee the metric kids would dominate. It is easier.

You gaurantee? Have you performed this test? Where's your facts? I can ask 50 people in my school which is easier, they'll all say imperial, because I've done it before. Have you done your test before? I thought not, so don't try to prove a point with an opinion.
I don't know, the rest of the world seems pretty on the ball, I'm 'aye' for globalization here.
That's what the US is trying to do.

Odd, seeing as among the three schools I went to in my later school career, I have not seen one person of the mindset that imperial is easier. It is by no means hard, but not very good.
Yes, I guarantee it.

As long as one person in this world does not think that metric is easier, it's an opinion. And you didn't get the point of my post at all. And, yes.
Metric is just plain stupid. 100 Km/h is about 60 mph, larger number makes you think that you are going faster when your going the same god damn speed. Only time Metric is worth using is when using wrenches. The repair manuals that I have used use Metric. Other than that, Metric plain sucks.
An example of a person doesn't think metric is easier.

Myanmar uses it as well.
:downs:
Also, stop insulting us Brits, when you're the idiots who gave us the system in the first place.
I am not saying it isn't an opinion, but it is one that almost everyone has, and can be proven correct for the general public. Metric is easier for the vast majority of learners, therefore metric is easier. That is not to say every single person will find it easier, but enough people will that it should be the system taught in schools and widely used since close to everyone will benefit. Perhaps that is utilitarian but you can't have both systems very well and metric is the better choice.
Where is that picture where it details the stages of an internet argument? You are at the stage of "Failing to win the large argument so you bring it down to syntax and argue the other person is wrong based on wording".
I know that, but America is still learning it because stupid Texans are putting it in their textbooks, which their textbooks circulate nationwide. Texas is mostly a Republican state, and we know how Republicans hate change.
-snip- for stupidity
Imperial makes for a good medium distance measurement. Telling someone it's about .356342 of a meter long is a pain in the ass. Also, there was a time when imperial was logical, the problem is most people don't know the logic, and no one's willing to do the research to figure it out. Oh yeah, and metric is french. Who wants to follow the cheese eating surrender monkey system?
Or you could say:
3.56342dm (Round it to 3.56dm if you like)
35.6342cm (Round it to 35.63cm if you like)
356.342mm (Round it to 356.34mm if you like)
Face it, the Metric system is superior in every way.
By the way, you are a fucking idiot for putting in those last two sentences.

It doesn't matter if certain people think the Imperial system is easier, there is absolutely no question that the Metric system is easier to learn for a child.

You still don't get it, do you? A study was conducted soon after the US made the push for metric, and it showed that, in five separate tests, neither the metric or the imperial system was easier to understand in children. All had different results.
