They're still a bunch of elitist cunts tho
Wouldn't go that far. If that's the way you choose to classify them I doubt you've considered how much time and effort that goes into organizing and maintaining game sessions on this scale.
They're still a bunch of elitist cunts tho
How are they elitist? Honestly, what. Just because they don't allow any retard to play on their server that makes them elitist?
They're still a bunch of elitist cunts tho
Shacktaq were some of the chillest dudes I have EVER played with in ANY arma session.
Would recommend it to anyone if you can get in.

With the quality of the community as it stands and the level of gameplay we get out of it, you can't help being "elitist" (or in the real world, proud). I was accepted at the beginning of April and they're in fact very accommodating. Don't confuse elitism with having standards, because without such standards it'd just be another shitfest. If you're saying this because you're bitter about being dropped, or not accepted, I'm glad it happened because that sort of attitude could only be detrimental.

Nah, no reason for me to apply. I just heard of a lot of alright dudes taking months for any response to come and then a big No being slapped into their face.
What a "community" this is

I'm pretty sure you have no idea just how many applications they receive, do you expect them to accept every request from "alríght dudes" that come in?

I applied 3 times before getting in, it's like applying to anything major. You don't get in first try unless you're absurdly appealing, it's about being persistent, lucky, and showing that you want to be in more than just a mission or two

That, and it's just Dslyexci going through them. Plus, if every man and his dog started getting accepted the server wouldn't handle so many players. That's just scraping the surface.
When there's so many "alright dudes" applying how can you expect them not to accept only the most promising of them with such constraints

You're funny. You don't get a "No". I wish you got a "No."
I'm in the First and Only Shacktac DEP (Delayed Entry Program) class. I have been for three months shy of two years. Suffice to say, I don't think that's ever going anywhere at this point - but there's no way to know, because Dslyecxi's made it damn clear that he won't take precious time out of his day to inform a small group of people that they've been politely rejected.

Though, and I might be fox-and-graping it hard here, it doesn't bother me too much. Regardless of everything they've been having lots of trouble managing server population size due to engine restrictions and I'm probably not nearly as dedicated as plenty of others would be in my place.

Got any tips for people who might want to join? I've looked at their website and FAQ but just wondering if there is anything that would improve the odds.

I wish I could tell you something specific or give you some sort of secret that will give you higher chances of getting in. My application was the blandest thing ever and I didn't think I was even going to get in.
I guess don't try too hard? But I applied back when Shacktaq was a lot smaller of a group so there's no telling.
ShackTac would be better if they were more forthcoming with the inner dealings of the community. That and some of their other members that make videos seem like they'd be absolute pricks.
Reading this thread made me interesting and joining and seeing a 18+ age limit in the FAQ put a bad taste in my mouth.

They didn't even give me a chance, was ignored 3 times and I've been in and out of many different communities.

Which members?

The amount of people I've meet in ArmA who have applied for ShackTac is large. It honestly probably be a waste of anybodies time who wants to get into their community now. Dslyecxi has made it known about how many apps they have received in the past and it's good amount of people. They're other mil-sim communities out there that have promising opportunities. I was briefly in 15th MEU community before I had to take a leave of abstinence. I now occasionally hope on United Operations.
I currently play on United Operations and i'm currently looking into the /v/ Arma group, I think it'd be a good idea if the FPers on UO become aware of eachother.
Sad to see so many people bitter about not getting in. There are so many applications, that with server limitations, among other things, it only makes sense to have a contained community. If there were a huge amount of members and only like 150 could play on the server at one time, it would be a mess.
Dslyecxi has a lot to manage, yet he still puts out quality videos, and some are unappreciative of that because they didn't get in on a wave of ~20-30(?) applicants that were accepted out of the hundreds, or thousands or whatever of people that applied.
If you really want to get in, apply for it! You might get lucky. Maybe have something to offer like mission making skills or something... There's no obligation to have that ability, but I left the community mostly because I felt I wasn't contributing enough as a member.
would they consider someone with real military experience (specifically in the Marine Corps) as a good candidate? i am a reservist 0341 Mortarman and this looks like something fun to do in spare time. plus i read that Dslyecxi is a Marine vet himself. thing is I'm not great at writing applications and shit like that

Good luck. They have a massive waiting list. Don't expect to get in this year if you sign up now.

They process applications every 6 months though, don't they? I think that if you don't get a reply a couple of weeks after a wave is processed just assume you're not in.

On your first statement, why/how?
Second, who? I've not met a single prick in my time so far.
Reading this thread made me interesting and joining and seeing a 18+ age limit in the FAQ put a bad taste in my mouth.
I'd say it's pretty much necessary. Your average 17yo or younger is extremely unlikely to be mature enough to live up to the standards demanded of an applicant
They didn't even give me a chance, was ignored 3 times and I've been in and out of many different communities.
I made 4 applications over 2 years. The only reply you can expect is one of acceptance. Wait 6 months to a year and apply again, improve the app any way you can.

I only applied last year. It will be a long wait between applying and being accepted, but if you really want to join, and can commit to the community and the sessions, there's no reason not to.
On United Operations, it's where I was playing since Tactical Gamer moved on to ArmA 3. They're extremely hit-and-miss for me - They have some very interesting missions and they have decent sized games (50+ players at times). There are some great players, teammates and leaders in that community, but being a relatively open one it has its fair share of shitheads too. Get to know the players there and make an effort to squad up with those who take it at least somewhat seriously.

Your military experience may well help, but it's all about the application its self. If you just put "i am army man and i like shooty games" it won't get a second look. The page about the app process is very descriptive of what's required, it practically writes it for you.
Also, it's made explicitly clear that the sessions aren't something you just join in on as and when you feel like it, it requires a relatively high degree of commitment. If spare time is something you don't get a lot of, it's probably best to not even bother, unless you can guarantee you'd be available and willing to play most Saturday nights.

Also this; I made my most recent app November last year. I sent it in then forgot about it completely. Checked my emails on the last day of March and boom, a reply.
Call me crazy, but is there perhaps a link between the fact that people get bitter about not getting accepted and not getting a response?
What I mean is, perhaps if you get bitter when you face rejection you're not the kind of person ShackTac wants? Just a theory, it's not like I applied yet.
Sounds about right to me

I know that when I played that not one of the members showed any signs of being egocentric or childish. I wouldn't be surprised is he required a certain age too by this point. Don't get upset if you don't get it. It's a high bar and the server is always pushed to its population limit.
