are you guys in australia sure you get who you actually voted for up there
Up there? Where do you live? Antartica?
And uhh, we've got some red head bitch at the moment who is doing as much as the last prime minister was doing.
Nothin'
Internet censorship as-is only influences people who create criminal content, it isn't a moral issue at allexc
except it is, because what constitues "criminal content" differs across borders
the internet spans the whole world (save for blackholes like best korea), so there is the problem of content being perfectly legal where you live, but you cannot access it because the censorship authority has blocked it
(this assumes that the censorship authority is international)
case in point: the age of consent differs according to where you are. in some places it's as low as 13
therefore what would constitute child porn in some countries would be legal in others, and a problem therefore occurs

up/down is relative

I always just say "up there" when talking about different countries or cities or whatever I guess
Didn't Australia try to ban Windows 7 because apparently something like the new taskbar would somehow help the distribution of child pornography
sounds like everyone in the government is a Jack Thompson clone
In fact, the only things that should be censored is actual abuse, like child pornography and beating someone when it is being portrayed as entertainment, and people in it don't/can't consent.
The way censorship works is that if someone inside the country has hosted something illegal, they go and take down the server and arrest the person who created the web-site.
If someone outside the country hosted something illegal, the populace of only that country is blocked from seeing it.
I don't see a problem with that system
Its hard to make a good poll for a topic like this, hence why it is encouraged to actually post and say what you want about the subject. Just think about how intrinsic it becomes. Child Porn and piracy being grouped together is just because it's the biggest 'laws' that get broken when people use the internet.
Piracy is huge and child pornography is watched by a small minority.
Oh fuck, oh fuck, the internet's gonna' be poor.

the problem is that it makes it far too easy to block dissent and differing opinions
this has been shown in real life - that leaked blacklist for the australian internet filter contained a bunch of youtube videos about euthanasia for christ's sake
The Australian government isn't representative of all governments. Cuba is under tyranny and corruption, that doesn't mean every nation follows Fidel's example.

Your government is lying to me.
I like the assumption that the internet will still be here in 20 years, and we will still be here in 20 years.

I like to believe in that assumption as well.

That's something to be mad at the legal system over and not the censorship system.
If you're directly hosting (not hosting torrent trackers to, that's okay) copyrighted material on the internet and giving it out that should still be censored, though, in my eyes.

well considering facepunch's diet and lifestyle, you have a point

Considering the internet is an absolutely enormous infrastructure getting more advanced daily and humans aren't facing any huge threat both of those seem pretty reasonable
I went for Option #4 but I guess you guys haven't realized it's already being censored.
You just don't know it yet.
They'd have to have a vote on it.
nobody would vote yes

lmfao Morph
Any kind of censorship is bad in my opinion. Of course I understand you put down an age on things (surely you don't want eight year old Timmy to be browsing the web to only find scat porn made out of his childly heroes), but censorship can't be applied on adults.
Censorship and free thinking are two things that don't go hand in hand very well.
Somehow i don't see it happening. As the old saying goes, 'The internet interprets Censorship as damage and routes around it'. Even if the networks wanted to implement censorship and went through with it, Users would always find a way around. Case in point, the AACS Encryption key (09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0)- Censorship was attempted, which just proliferated the key further.
TL;DR: Even if the government wants it to happen, the users won't let them.
Why did you even start this poll? I don't think you even understand what censorship is OP.

Yes I do believe I understand what internet censorship is.
They should censor it, but with limits. If they do censor a site you can write an e-mail to the government and if you have a good enough reason they'll unblock it.
I read the op while stroking my beard, and pulled a few hairs when i thought about a censored internet. It hurt like fuuuuuck.
Yes, people are fucked and the internet will probably be censored in ~5 years. I fucking hate censorship, it doesn't help anyone.
Im pretty sure everything will be censored by then
:saddowns:
it will be more, not all will be though
The internet will be much bigger in 20yrs, censoring something like that will last for a little while, but like most things, it would change, probably some sort of revolution.
trust me, future generations will lose their freedom. they will lose their liberty. they'll lose it all to an encroaching dependence on technology and government. the question is when will it happen, and how can we delay it.

Why. are you too dumb to decide what you can look at?
