• The Know - "Half Life 3 Will Never Release"

The Know really has an identity problem. If they properly labeled things people wouldn't get on their assess.
The flat structure is also a double-edged sword. It can also mean no one wants to work on Half-Life 3 because there are other interesting projects to work on instead. [editline]24th July 2015[/editline] Without management, nothing gets done
I've also said numerous times in the past that I would be unphased if Half-Life 3 never came out. It really wouldn't bother me. Sure, I'd like for that game to be released but there is more in this life than one unfinished video game. I understand that people want Valve to finish the series but at the same time, I feel like all of their successes will be undermined by the people saying, "yeah, but it's not Half-Life 3."
they're talking about this video right now on their live Q&A
Without management, nothing gets done
actually some cabals have some self management. You're supposed to self manage in a way as a job requirement. At least that's what the employees and exemployees have told me.
I remember Gay Ben saying that "if someone at the company decided to make a retro HL sequel, ignoring everything we learned in shipping Portal 2, that would seem like a bad idea" That means HL3 will never happen unless they force microtransactions like their past shows. Sad times indeed.

Sad times indeed.
portal 2's microtransactions bombed, iirc
Honestly L4D3 makes MUCH more sense of coming out anytime soon. A new L4D game could benefit greatly from Source 2 and it can even have microtransactions. Skins for players, guns, map packs, etc. I don't know how they would do any of that in a single-player only game.
L4D3 would be the ideal test-subject to precede something as complex as Half-Life 3.
I remember Gay Ben saying that "if someone at the company decided to make a retro HL sequel, ignoring everything we learned in shipping Portal 2, that would seem like a bad idea" That means HL3 will never happen unless they force microtransactions like their past shows. Sad times indeed.
That's what you got from that discussion? Uh, there's more than microtransactions in Portal 2, you know. They did a lot of things differently, including hiring some people straight out of college to do level design, introducing a ton of new features to the engine, and doing a lot of beta tests for certain members of the Steam Forums from what I can recall.

TBH my money is on them being afraid of the number 3 at this point, not because of some stupid joke or calling gabe fat, but literally because they are so unsure that what they'll make will even live up to the previous games' groundbreaking attributes, and if it does, they are unsure if it'll make enough money at all. Or they want to just do something new.
Watched, 15 minutes of bullshit, nobody else waste their time watching or even skimming.

Then why did he say making a retro HL sequel would be a mistake?

Last time I played L4D2 (which was a few months back), it was totally fine.
Last time I played L4D2 (which was a few months back), it was totally fine.
It's not a game that you can keep gradually playing like CS:GO, Dota, or TF2. It will get boring because the variety just isn't there, partially because it's primarily a co-op game. But it doesn't help that they just don't add any meaningful content updates, or add a proper workshop that allows the community to add more than just campaigns.
I will say that it was impossible to host a server without insane amounts of lag so servers running additional content would rule big time.
I will always have faith in Valve, even if they are slow as fuck. My best guess is that we won't see a new HL3 or anything related to it until they finish tweaking and updating the new Source Engine we have seen in DOTA 2 and L4D2(screenshots only for L4D2). Which is good! I have hope that Valve understands their community and wants to continue to set the standards for what makes games good. When HL3 gets announced, I promise you there will be articles everywhere with titles like "The Internet Breaks Over HL3", and everyone will scream like little girls until it gets released.
Gotta be honest, i'd love a new Left 4 Dead that was properly updated and had attention and care put towards it.
I would more expect HL2:EP3, seeing as they claimed it would be a trilogy, and Valve isn't one to lie. "Half-Life 2: Episode One is the first in a trilogy of episodes serving as the sequel of the 2004 first-person shooter video game Half-Life 2." (Bokitch, Chris (2006-05-22). "Valve press release". Steam. Retrieved 2007-04-29.) and maybe HL3 will be awesome enough to get Garry to make a sequel to Gmod.
Shitty video aside the idea is still up there. Even if it does come out what's not to say the long wait and hightened expectations wouldn't lead to Duke Nuke'em Forever style failure? Hell I gave up on Gordon long ago, in the same length it took for HL3 to come out, Fallout 4 is coming out before it, so that says alot to me. [editline]24th July 2015[/editline] Or worse, what's to say, with their laid back company structure, that they haven't lazily given up on the game to focus on their money makers CS:GO. DOTA 2, AND TF2? Along with Steam?
I think it will come out for VR. Everything is falling into place. Just you wait and see.

I want to be virtual Gordon Freeman flailing my arms around to simulate hot crowbar action until someone walks into my room and I accidentally punch them in the face for not LEAVING ME ALONE MOM
The only thing that The Know has actually been correct on so far was the leaked info on Dark Souls III, but other than that, I don't think they really have any other credibility to their name.
Never give up hope in Valve! They are a good company! [sp]right...?[/sp]
Honestly after Greenlight, shady store sale deals, and their hamfisted paid mods thing (It was a Valve idea, Beth was on it because their moddable games are the most popular), I can't really take Valve seriously anymore, honestly I'd leave steam if not for having alot of good friends and alot of money put into it. I'd rather go with Blizzard or Beth since they're both making/producing alot of good games that have come out and are coming out.
Paid mods was a good idea that everyone flipped out about. What shady store deals, though?

Where anyone who hoarded loads and loads of card, emotes, and shit could just get free games while the rest of us got shit. And the Staged team summer thing, where every team won at least once, and then the last two were just random I think, also you had to put in alot of cash to get a game I think, or contribute alot of points via crafting, again going into the hoarders win thing. [editline]24th July 2015[/editline]
I can tell you have absolutely no idea WHY Duke Nukem Forever was the disaster it was.
I know why it failed, I also know one of those reasons was a long waiting period. People can only wait for so long until their game get's released.
I know why it failed, I also know one of those reasons was a long waiting period. People can only wait for so long until their game get's released.
No? It was because the guy heading the project kept forcing it to be restarted every couple of years to incorporate new shit, and thats not getting into the nitty and gritty, it goes pretty deep. It had nothing to do with how long it took.
Also before you all go on about how "impatient" I am, the problem isn't that there isn't a release, it's that Valve has not given even the tiniest hint at all that they might be working on it. Not once in the almost 8 years since Ep:2 was released did Valve give us some notice about it, just pure utter silence, and nothing but.
