Looks like you can't even say his name on the Facepunch forums anymore. And this happened almost 10 years ago! I remember watching the flame wars when that shit went down.
Not being able to say his name was due to a whole lot more than that.
Duke Nukem Forever had the same line of thinking..z
There's a point where the hype dies and there's a point where the hype is so strong that literally nothing can be done right. The problem is there are no winning moves unless Valve actually makes a really good game. And even then if they wait long enough there will be backlash simple because "That's it? we waited X years for this?" There is probably always going to be that, but there's going to be more of it the longer it takes. It's probably a good thing Valve hasn't released ANY info about hl3 at all because otherwise there would probably be no winning move for them.
For fucks sake, that wasnt the problem.
Is it too much to ask for that people actually do their research? No? Is that because if you did, you wouldnt be bringing it up?
I thought Gabe himself basically said this already?
"The only reason we'd go back and do like a super classic kind of product is if a whole bunch of people just internally at Valve said they wanted to do it and had a reasonable explanation for why [they did]."
-Gabe Newell

Okay? And?
Your point is redundant and wrong.
I thought this was already pretty obvious when Gabe basically said this himself?
"Super Classic"
Read what you're posting, jesus christ.
That says nothing about if the game is being made or not, its how the game will be when it is.
I am aware. I also see that he released his Cider gamemode anyways. It was all a huge hassle when I was an admin on his server. I got to that position when he broke into my house and used rope to spam dicks on my walls in his server. He said he felt bad and gave me perma-donor status and then made me admin a couple months later. He was always a dick - and is why I left his server too. I won't deny that Cider was fucking amazeballs though.
[editline]derp[/editline]
He shoulda/coulda sold that shit!
I thought this was already pretty obvious when Gabe basically said this himself?
Nobody is under the impression a new Half-Life game will be a super classic kind of product. It's a new Half-life game.
It's his answer to whether or not fans will ever see a proper Half-Life 3.
It's his answer to "whether or not fans will ever see a proper Half-Life 3."
no it isn't? they never asked that
It's his answer to "whether or not fans will ever see a proper Half-Life 3."
No.
And his answer isnt "nobody is doing Half-Life"
His answer is "people would need a reason to do Half-Life like we did it before."
Fucking Portal 2, thats all i have to say.
Huh, well the thread ratings and replies gave me that impression, maybe I recall wrong.

That sounds like there isn't even an interest at Valve in doing a "classic kind of product" like another Half-Life game. That sucks.

how do facepunch ratings change the context of a quote
Tired of shitty games? Stop paying for shitty games. Start researching. Stop trusting developers so much. Stop buying early access games without a full-understanding of what you're getting into.
this isnt an attack on you, but rather just a personal anecdote.
every time i do exactly that, i get called entitled, insulted, and generally mistreated. i wont be buying fallout 4 because i vehemently disagree with bethesdas involvement in paid mods, and do not want to support them. but apparently thats me being entitled.
i dont buy valve games anymore (and rarely even games on steam, too) because i disagree with valves treatment of monetizing everything they touch. apparently im entitled for that too?
i do my research and i dont buy games made by devs i dont like, or by publishers i disagree with. but yet thats apparently bad. it really fucking grates on my nerves doing my job as a consumer is looked down upon by at least a portion of the gaming community.

I am nothing like this, I buy games because they look cool, I use Steam all the time, and love the platform. I think paid mods are a good idea as well - because imo people who work hard on them should have the option to make money for their effort.
However,
if I was more like you and did research, was more skeptical, and smarter about how I use my money, the video game industry would be so much better. I don't deny that I am a hypocritical idiot a lot of the time at all. Half the games I own I never even play. If I bought my games through the dev's themselves or small publishers, the world would be so much better. It is hard to do though for someone as lazy as me.
I do however try to support a few devs that I truly have faith in, or am interested in. Like the people making Parkitect or the new Stranded III game that has been in development forever. I even bought Starbound back before it was even released so that I could get into the alpha testing.

Hey, I already linked the interview thread where everybody agreed that it sounds like Valve is not interested in Half-Life anymore. I don't know why we are arguing about this, everybody knows what he meant.

id say something like 90% of my steam library i wont play, because i havent always thought this way. but the past few years in video games have really soured me. im tired of spending so much money and being disappointed time and again. so now if i see a game im interested in, ill wait for it to come out for a while, watch some videos on it (usually voice-less LPs), look it up on the pcgamingwiki to see if it has any major glaring issues, and then see if i can find some streams of it on twitch to see what people are doing in it. if i dont like what i see, i find another means of playing the game.
and after being a huge valve fanboy for the longest time, and disagreeing as much as i do with that theyve done recently, ive learned how important it is to not be brand loyal.
If this is true, and sorry if someone already said this, wouldn't it be safe to say the hype behind HL3 killed HL3?
Idk about those predicted sales figures for HL3, basing it on previous installments from years ago, the valve/half life fanbase has grown extremely since then and would easily pull in more sales more likely compared to what HL2 did.
I doubt it. Most of those people are interested in games like TF2 and DOTA 2 and probably wouldn't give a shit about some singleplayer linear FPS.
Quite frankly, there is no way that Half Life 3 could live up to all the hype it would generate. I know that is the consumer's fault but still, the hype would be unavoidable simply because how many jokes about its frequent delays and lack of info have been cracked.
I still don't see Valve releasing it any time in the near future. Everything they have already developed (probably very little) will have to be remade for Source 2.
But really, it's Valve's lack of a command structure that has strangled HL3 in its crib. They have no enforcement. Nobody can make you work on HL3, and considering it would be the most difficult title to develop, I bet nobody at Valve wants to work on it. Why bother when you can fart out a half-assed update for TF2 and still bring home six figures for doing comparatively little?
If this is true, and sorry if someone already said this, wouldn't it be safe to say the hype behind HL3 killed HL3?
the hype behind hl2 didn't kill hl2
If this is true, and sorry if someone already said this, wouldn't it be safe to say the hype behind HL3 killed HL3?
I was going to say something similar about how that is what killed Duke Nukem Forever, but read a post in this thread saying that isn't why DNF failed. I personally agree and think that expectations build over time, and can get to the point that they become unrealistic, which leads to a massive let-down when the new game doesn't live up to the hype.

I would expect that people who work for Valve would be just as anticipative and hopeful for an HL3 remake as any of the fans of the series, if not moreso. I doubt it has anything to do with motivation.

Dude I get that he's not following your train of thought but you should calm down a bit.
Their source keeps claiming that Valve moved all the people off of HL3, and that management made the decision... but Valve doesn't have management, and employees decide themselves what they work on.
the hype behind hl2 didn't kill hl2
It's debatable, ok, can we leave it at that? Everyone in the thread had different opinions about what's true, so why do have to you treat me like an idiot as if I'm arguing against a popular opinion or a fact? I just came here to put my two cents, not to have a goddamn fight. :tired:

I agree - this thread has derailed so hard it makes me cringe
I believe Valve will finally announce Half-Life 3 sometime after Source 2 is completely optimized and bug free for Dota 2.
L4D3 first, for steam machine release purposes, then maybe after that.
