Probably most of the people who would pay for a download would be those who got linked to the video through a "Fw: Fw: Fw: Look at this awesome vid!" email chain or users who didn't know that you could download the videos for free.
If having a pay service raises attention for them to do this as well as generating revenue for the video owner then good for them.

Stage6 was a promotion site from the DivX codec, it wasn't expected to be such a succes, and wasn't planned to be up forever.

Only problem with that is, youtube then blocks it for some countries, and Norway is always on that list, for some reason.

I've posted an article earlier about why youtube is valuable in terms of its potential for user anonymity and lack of comment moderation. Because of these two factors, we can get a pretty accurate picture of world opinion without the inhibitions usually seen by people who are afraid of being judged by society. Case in point? Google any video on the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan and you'll see racist, homophobic and just plain retarded comments from both sides. The Middle-Eastern viewpoint tends to typically be blindly religious or sometimes angry for the sake of anger. The American viewpoint is typically the kind of shitty attempts at rhetoric you'd expect from inbred KKK rejects (Sad, really). If Google starts moderating comments too, then Youtube will really be shit. I mean, it's shit already. But it'll be even worse then.
Who knows? Maybe deep down everyone's an ignorant, bigoted prick. Or maybe it's just the ignorant, bigoted pricks that feel they have to tell everyone else what they think.
I agree with the OP, youtube has gone to the dogs in my mind. I can't even watch British TV shows in England without it saying they aren't available in my country. Half of my videos have had the sound removed for copyright reasons.

If youtube moderates comments, how would youtube's quality drop? It would just remove the ignorant comments from youtube, only problem would be that the ocmmunity would go other places.

I really loved the quality, and when there were new videos, they were usually awesome, as few, if any CSS/CS-regulars had any idea how to upload or record in divx format, which resulted in really few fragvideos and the like.
I still remember a movie about a kid going insane, and it was something like the end of the world. "I think I' loosing my mind this time, this time I'm loosing my mind", it was awesome.
There was even HD porn there.
