If it was pre-arranged with the bride-to-be (so she knew about it and was okay with it) and it was just kinda a staged thing, I wouldn't have a problem with it.
sadly this is not the case
I'm still watching it, but it's really hard to watch. It's almost like watching someone getting raped, but it's all supposed to be "okay". Really makes me angry.
I know how you feel I skiped some sences my self :(
It seems to me like they picked the very best possible match to film for the bride kidnapping, given that the two had already been dating and the girl probably would have said yes if she had just been asked, but I feel like it's missing the worst of it, people kidnapping a girl just because they are asocial fuckwits that use hurrdurr "culture" as a way to get laid.
i really don't know how to feel about this
I have no words to express my anger.
To be honest, they all felt bad about doing it and at no point did they intend to take her pride or rape her or anything. It's a savage tradition but I think it could be worse.
They all felt bad about it, oh that makes it okay.
It could be worse: they could poke her eyes out or something. They could cut some limbs off. But they don't, so it's not that savage.
I watched it at school as part of a class. I had friends so to fit in we all had to laugh. Personally I think it's repulsive.
Congratulations, you're part of the reason why this thing continues: succumbing to peer pressure even in the face of something horrible.
I hope it feels good.
Unless if you're talking about making Nazgul jokes. Then you're okay.

yeah guys let's all alienate ourselves from our friends because of social issues that we have very little ability to change from our cushy first-world positions
yeah
that'll show em
'culture'? no, 'barbarism' is what it's called
this is a stupid thing to say
-snip-
What's actually happening in the video? What's the purpose? I won't be able to watch for a while

these Vice dudes are basically doing a report on the illegal, yet still common (as police don't do much to stop it) practice of men kidnapping women to marry them. the whole family plans it out and then they just go grab the woman. people like to hold onto it because it's "tradition" and they haven't read The Lottery by Shirley Jackson I guess.

also I keep thinking of how this is vaguely like grad kidnapping, except violent and humiliating and misogynist and terrifying rather than a fun joke
VICE has some of the "best" news stories and reports around. They're fucking awesome, finally shedding light on these sad stories.
I was deployed at Manas in Kyrgyzstan last year. Definitely some......interesting....people there. Went to Bishkek a few times and there's just swarms of people everywhere.
EDIT: Here's a couple of pics when I was in downtown Bishkek

they do
That's an awesome tradition! They were going to get married anyway, might as well do it with some pizazz.
VICE seems like an interesting premise, but I haven't seen enough of it to know how good it is. This is really interesting, though.
