I know it's aimed at kids as well but the first ten minutes of the episode has a bit too many "spelling it out for the audience". I think isomorphic controls have been in Doctor Who enough that people will either already know what it means, or just disregard is as technobabble and get on with watching the show. That's not the only example, I'm just saying.
Anyway, to people complaining about not being allowed to touch yourself from the past, you're acting as if Father's Day set that rule, even though it's probably happened before in the classic series (mainly episodes like the Five Doctors etc)
I'm not too fond of the Doctor rewriting someone's life to make them nice, it doesn't seem like something he'd do. Seems a bit morally questionable if you ask me. Other than that bit of nitpicking, I really liked the episode. One of the best Christmas specials.
I liked the whole re-writing the past as it could be horrifically dark and exciting. It was just unfortunate it was the Christmas special so they couldn't do anything like that. I would like to see changing someones past again at some point, but in a more adult scenario.
Massive huge gaping plot hole in this episode, when Kazran hugs his younger self why does this not create a paradox? By all rights that should have been an event that the Reapers were called in to deal with. Unless the Reapers are extinct by this point in time but that wouldn't make much sense.
Edit: Heh, I just noticed this was mentioned a few posts above me. Go figure.
So yeah, watching all that it was great. Steampunky in some ways. Also, the Next Time was amazing; I saw the ship from the Lodger in there as well as the Beast writing maybe. Looks to be interesting.
Also, I freaked out the most at Nazis. I can't believe they're actually going to have Nazis!
[editline]26th December 2010[/editline]
Also, forgot to mention this. Anyone notice the resemblance between one of the ship's crewmen at the helm in the special and Peter Davison? Striking, really. Didn't check the credits, was that his son in Doctor Who again?
I want to find out more about the suited alien/slenderman thing, the weird baby faced alien/robots and the TARDIS from the Lodger. I can't wait!

Nah. It looks more like a count 5 strikethrough thing.
Guys, this just occurred to me in a bout of fridge logic. We're all talking about the trailer and the clues inside there, but there's no reason there can't be clues in the special too. What about the song? In Confidential, the producers said they wanted a Christmas song just for Doctor Who. That was the last song of the whole episode. They wouldn't create a song of random, there's got to be meaning behind it. One line struck me as prophetic.
"Silence is all around." The Silence. I mean, we all know we're coming back to it, but it's being lampshaded right here.
"Let in the light of your bright shadow" Vashta Nerada?
I don't know, maybe this is all idle speculation and the words really only just pertain to Abigail and Kazran.
Bleh, didn't like the special. Too happy and soppy for my tastes
Didn't they say the christmas special would be more timey wimey than the 2-parter finale?
Loved the special, great tribute to the real Christmas Carol.

that's like going to a star trek convention and complaining that they're on spaceships too much
it's a christmas special, of course it's going to be happy and soppy
I loved it, thought it was very clever.

Try telling that to christmas versions of soap operas.
It's christmas, let's kill everyone

But Doctor Who doesn't want to associate itself with Soaps.
Just saw the christmas special, It was good, but I was dissapointed that the shark didn't get shown more.
As for the trailer, well, I don't know really what to say. Maybe something about Roswell? Maybe we get to find out how Henry van Statten (the guy in the undergound bunker with all the alien artifacts) discovered Broadband?

myth plausible
The first thing I thought: Steampunk
I really don't know if i like Matt Smith as the Doctor, it just seems like he doesn't actually think things through. He doesn't seem very serious either.
David Tennant was great because he was fairly serious most of the time. He seemed like he actually knew what he was doing. I just couldn't see the current Doctor doing anything like when he gets angry at Wilf in the End of Time.
that's the point, each doctor is different
it isn't exactly the same character
This years special was the most epic special I've ever watched in my entire life.
that's the point, each doctor is different

I'm sure he will be alright next series, still haven't seem alot of him. I'm just used to a serious Doctor.
Nah. It looks more like a count 5 strikethrough thing.
Looks more like stitches you would see on a damaged toy.
I'm sure he will be alright next series, still haven't seem alot of him. I'm just used to a serious Doctor.
Matt's different as the Doctor because he's mostly over his whole race dying now. The 9th Doctor was destructive, 10th was upset over the fact that he'd lost his race so pined over them a lot, the 11th is now mostly over it and is getting on with things.
Looks more like stitches you would see on a damaged toy.
I think you're on to something, looking at that picture. Definitely not the Beast, and it does look like that. Also, considering the French-y painting in the background and the inclusion of the [sp](possibly clockwork?)[/sp] little French-looking dolls in a creepy manner, a toy stitch might have something to do with it.
Also, this series looks to be absolutely terrifying. Yes.

Also, I don't think the "problem" with Eleven is his lack of a plan or failing to think things through. I love him so far, and that's sort of his thing it seems; his brain is going faster than his mouth and it just all spills out while he makes it up as he goes along. Several times last night I love one gag he keeps doing, something to the effect of "Well there's [x]! Well actually, [x] isn't that, and it isn't that either, and it'll probably kill you, so neverrmind that." It's coming off more as his character and it's brilliant.
Matt Smith seems to be totally into the "old man in a young man's body" thing. A great performance by him, but I don't really like this series as much as the RTD ones, it ignores the rules of time travel and rushes off into fantasy at the slightest excuse as far as I can see.

I think that's what makes it better
I do like the Doctor Who v5 Stetsons are cool, but I had to throw my own idea out there; Doctor Who v5 Marilyn's on the phone.
I think that's what makes it better
it's good in small doses but it's going to get very old very quickly if they overuse it, just like the daleks were.
A quick question. Did anyone else see the painting of Hitler on the wall in the trailer?
So, yah, I missed the special.....
Can I like, buy it? Or like watch it somewhere?
BBC iPlayer?
