It was used in southern states against blacks before, wasn't it?
Then again free voting allowed hitler to get in power!!1 :godwin:
It was used in southern states against blacks before, wasn't it?
The point is that if you issue a general test to determine the intelligence of an American Citizen, you are basically denying their right to vote on the basis of their intelligence, not on their beliefs. If you set up IQ tests and people who score low are denied the right to vote, you're basically restarting segregation on a much larger level than just race and skin color.
But that's comparing it to something trying to deliberately keep blacks and slaves from voting. I'm not saying shut them out.
You're shutting out more people than just blacks, you're shutting out larger portions of people.
Offer people the chance to learn the facts, and then have that be what's tested.
That is what school and the media is for, why are we suggesting another test on every single fucking issue right before they vote?
A literacy test to a slave who has been kept from school isn't fair, but i don't think a test over a book you can look through is unfair.
An intelligence test to a citizen is already unfair to a large amount of people who wants to vote on what they believe.

Being lazy is my civil right, and I have the right to do absolutely nothing to keep it that way.
And even earlier against Indians.
Thanks for reminding me. :3:
Because black people are illiterate. :saddowns:
I didn't say that once. That was the way it was handled when slaves, many of whom were illiterate because they didn't have the opportunity to learn were singled out to not vote.
Okay, unconstitutional, yadda yadda. But I'm asking more along the lines of "why not?"
Because the net effect would be pretty much to prevent poor people from voting
I guess i just have to agree for the most part. I want people to educate themselves, but you can't force people to educate themselves, or i'm sure the world would be a much better place.
But that's comparing it to something trying to deliberately keep blacks and slaves from voting. I'm not saying shut them out. Does that mean I am ineligible?
Liar
Not all black people at the time were slaves, and the intent of the literacy test to vote back then was simply to keep the majority of black people from voting. What are you missing about that?
I guess i just have to agree for the most part. I want people to educate themselves, but you can't force people to educate themselves, or i'm sure the world would be a much better place.
Because forcing people to do what you want would make the world a better place. Educate yourself with some World History.
It would be better to educate the voter instead of trying to stop the stupid ones because stupidity is a very powerful force.
I guess i just have to agree for the most part. I want people to educate themselves, but you can't force people to educate themselves, or i'm sure the world would be a much better place.
There's a place for that. It's called school you idiot.
What if I can't read, or I am not intelligent enough to comprehend the test? Does that mean I am ineligible?
If you can't read the test, then you can't read the ballot. Are you saying people who don't know at all what they are voting for should vote for things?
Not all black people at the time were slaves, and the intent of the literacy test to vote back then was simply to keep the majority of black people from voting. What are you missing about that?
Thank you for the insightful tidbit that does not change the fact that you posted black people don't know facts.
There's a place for that. It's called school you idiot.
Oh right, because only brilliant minds come out of schools. Passing math has nothing to do with knowing what you are voting for.
If you can't read the test, then you can't read the ballot. Are you saying people who don't know at all what they are voting for should vote for things?
There are ways to vote for the blind, deaf, etc. Not to mention how easy it is to recognize someones name from all the posters and what not. And good job stereotyping people who are unable to read to not knowing anything political.
Oh right, because only brilliant minds come out of schools. Passing math has nothing to do with knowing what you are voting for.
There are society studies and history lessons that - believe it or not - tell the answers to all the useless questions that would be on the "test"
Oh right, because only brilliant minds come out of schools. Passing math has nothing to do with knowing what you are voting for.
So if I think that 2+2=5 I am still able to vote? If I cannot measure the politician's forecast on the economy if he/she is elected that it will decrease the debt by a difference of 2 billion dollars compared to the opposing candidate I can still vote?
Thank you for the insightful tidbit that does not change the fact that you posted black people don't know facts.
You are obviously failing to read. I said that back then, it was designed to keep people from voting, because at the time the majority of black people and slaves were uneducated because white people kept it that way. They segregated them, and left them with below standard schools and school supplies. I said nothing about the current situation, except that anyone could take the test.
Oh right, because only brilliant minds come out of schools. Passing math has nothing to do with knowing what you are voting for.
School educates people on this astounding new class called "History".
Here's another thing to think about: given that very intelligent and very stupid people voted for both candidates in the last election, how would you know whether you were successful?
There are ways to vote for the blind, death
Dead people voting - really?

[editline]5th January 2011[/editline]
Dead people voting - really?
lol
Dead people voting - really?
I'm pretty sure he meant deaf. But you already knew that.
I'm pretty sure he meant deaf. But you already knew that.
Yes. If there is a a bad joke I have to do it.
School educates people on this astounding new class called "History".
Okay fine, then we'll ditch anything from the past. I already suggested a test before the election about issues on the election, and you all just keep jumping all over the small things, and making stupid points like "hurr Hitler was elected by a majority!" neglecting the fact that hitler went out of his way to brainwash the masses, and eliminate any opposition from rival parties. It's like arguing with a bunch of fucking high schoolers.
