See you are all just being stupid and childish about it.
You're not taking it seriously, you're all just fishing for ratings.
Okay, i typed in the wrong part of a quote, my apologies.
You're bringing up small stupid facts.
It's not like there will be one line for testing, just like their isn't one single booth to vote in.
Get your head out of your ass.
I'm going to type like you now.
It adds depth to the quality of my posts.
You should still go back and read our posts.
Because bias that could shift the outcome of an election is not stupid.
It is very important.
Stop insulting me it's not nice.

Well I don't know about ALL Southern States, but those whities sure were paranoid about keeping harshly separate hand from the darkskins.
Wow, the fact that I'm receiving DUMB ratings for proposing that SMART people should be running things, has an irony to it.
Also, these days being educated is as simple as your own willingness to learn. Between mandatory schooling and the motherfucking Internet, there's really no excuse NOT to be able to learn the basics. Literacy tests were unfair back then because education discriminated by race. Today, it does not. So the only discrimination going on here, is discrimination against the stupid and ignorant, and if that makes me "intelligist" or something, then so be it.
The way I see it: uninformed vote = wasted vote.
You're being silly. Placing tests on something doesn't keep dumbasses out. You've obviously never been to college, or driven on a road.
All this will do is effectively lower voter participation, which is already lower than it needs to be.
We live in a country where you are allowed to make all the uninformed and ignorant votes you want.

I love you

And now to change the course of discussion a bit from the same tracks it's been rambling 5 pages..
In some countries you are required to vote by law - and you get fined if you don't vote. If you were sick/in accident you don't get fined if you can proof that though.
Would that be good towards democracy - or would it be ridiculing it?
Why would they be given a test on election day? That's already sounding like disenfranchisement. "Oh before you vote, please take the mandatory test administered by the Democratic Party."
And I really think people can afford a newspaper.
The Whites did not want to put down minorities. If you read your history book properly, the Whites wanted equal rights for Blacks, they wanted it separate. Many Southern states were already building All-Black schools, and other All-Black facilities at the cost of millions on millions of dollars. The Brown v. Board decision dashed all of those projects and so began the fun of forced busing.
Way to pay attention in school. Most southern whites wanted segregation, period end of story. They didn't care about equal rights. The supreme court just said it was ok so long as it was separate but equal. And guess what, it wasn't.

There's a reason everyone has a free public education now. Whether or not they want to use their education in their life to make a smart, and informed decision when they want to vote is their choice. But, welcome to life, not everyone takes advantage of their education.
I am rex again

In a way isn't that just as bad as forcing people to prove they can vote?
Forcing people who don't give a shit to vote seems just as bad.

That defeats the purpose of a democracy almost. Democracy and freedom go hand in hand these days. If you're free to vote, you should also be free from voting.
Not voting can at times be a way of acting out against a shitty (not necessarily corrupt) government.
I am rex again
This thread did in fact bring something good.
Way to pay attention in school. Most southern whites wanted segregation, period end of story. They didn't care about equal rights. The supreme court just said it was ok so long as it was separate but equal. And guess what, it wasn't.
Why did you think they wanted to get things improved so they could shut the NAACP up about unequal facilities?
I'd get the citation but I cba.
edit: Besides, you can't really snuff out ignorance in the elections. Thanks to free media and etcetera.
"I think some people are stupid and therefor shouldn't be allowed to vote."
Let me tell you one goddamn thing, if more people went to vote booths there would be much less insignificant and idiotic politicians on the seats. The problem doesn't get solved by weeding out the morons, it's solved by outnumbering them.

A lot of places didn't care about equal rights.
They just wanted to say "Look we gave you a school, climb down out of our asses about it".
Nevermind that the school didn't have anywhere near the staff or equipment they would have needed to even compare to the white schools.
I always liked this avatar
It makes me feel like being nice to people

Well you are required to go to school / possibly drafted to war too. And you could always vote donald duck or blank though.
I feel that the liberty to make a blank vote (aiming for the lesser evil is better imho) wouldn't make the forced-voting system all that bad.

I didn't really consider that.
I guess that isn't a bad option.
The option to vote for nothing at all.
Why did you think they wanted to get things improved so they could shut the NAACP up about unequal facilities?
If you look at the statements in Brown v. the Board of Education, even if everything was equal (which it was never going to be) it was still disadvantageous to blacks.
I didn't really consider that.

So people have to go through a test to vote nothing? Brilliant.

Being forced to vote is just as worse as being restricted from voting. There is no freedom in that. Then is it even truly a democracy? You are free to select your officials, you are not forced too.
I mean it's just my opinion, everyone has their own.

Yeah exactly, which dashed a bunch of those projects. The busing sucked also, they were just kindling the flame.
