Discussion about the "Uncrackable" DRM Denuvo, claimed to kill SSDs due to write cycles
This DRM not only kills your SSDs, but it will also significantly impact performance.
There are games out already that use it. All accounts indicate that it takes a little while to start up but once you're ingame it has no effect. This is the first negative thing reported about it, so it does not appear that there is significant performance impact.
As one of the replies in that thread said:
That would be horrifying if I hadn't also read that Steam deletes your porn and Firefox is a botnet to farm bitcoins to fund CIA psy-ops to promote the idea of alien abductions to distract people from the Illuminati running the world from the shadows.
If it's true though, that's some shit.
I'll reserve judgment until this is corroborated. It seems weird for it to operate as described without causing an immediate, enormous performance hit for non-SSD users, so I'm a little skeptical.
Is there another source for this? One or two random guys on one forum talking about it is not enough for me to instantly believe it right away. Are there some other people saying something similar or some tech analysis sites confirming it?
You're going to be hearing about this only on tech forums for a while now. Until the media picks this up, I can't see this getting a better source than tomshardware forum users. Maybe Digital Foundry will talk about it in their DA:Inquisition performance review.
as far as i can tell it isn't cracked, with most torrents just saying that its cracked and all of the commenters saying there isn't a crack out yet
It is cracked, I'm not gonna say where, I'm only going to say its in a russian tracker place
We now have DRM that actually breaks your computer. What's next? DRM that turns your computer into an active warhead
do you remember starforce
starforce actually destroyed disc drives or even caused cd's to spin too fast until they explode
Well I'm definitely not getting Inquisition until this is fixed/removed.
We now have DRM that actually breaks your computer. What's next? DRM that turns your computer into an active warhead
I'm surprised at how nobody has released DRM that actually breaks your computer, with the reasoning of "you're a dirty pirate, thats your punishment for pirating this"
Reminds me of the Starforce 4 DRM which was also "uncrackable" but it also wrecked people's disc drives.
We now have DRM that actually breaks your computer. What's next? DRM that turns your computer into an active warhead
DRM has always broken computers. That was why there was a backlash against star force
Companies don't give 1 iota of a shit about their customers.
It is cracked, I'm not gonna say where, I'm only going to say its in a russian tracker place
Always the fucking Russians, huh?
(this was meant to be a joke, although in hindsight with how Russia has been acting and moreso how people are reacting, I can see why it was taken seriously)
Simple solution: don't buy games that make use of this malicious software.
do you remember starforce

I had the opposite of that, it disabled all the speed enhancements on my drive and slowed it down to 1x.

At this point, I think I'd trust tomshardware posters over most people in the industry.
If this is true, then all games that use this should be classed as malware
Simple solution: don't buy games that make use of this malicious software.
Most people are totally clueless, I'm sure.
Though, I would think that PC gamers in particular have enough experience being treated like dogshit by publishers to make them suspicious.
haha i fucking knew it. of course the "uncrackable" drm fucks consumers once again.
You're going to be hearing about this only on tech forums for a while now. Alright, that's fine for now. But looking through other forums the only people talking about this are citing that original post on rpgcodex. Furthermore I haven't seen anyone talking about this on Tom's Hardware. So, if you have any links to other discussions please provide them. I honestly want to research this further but don't have the games and am not finding anything else on my own.
I've heard rumors that is what SecuROM used to do back in the day :v:
It did, actually. When it first started getting introduced into the Sims series there were plenty of cases of it knocking over motherboards.
Doesn't look like I'm missing out on much, also this fucking video.

Hey it is like starforce back in the day. Only starforce ate optical drives, not hard disks.
How the fuck can they not pick up on this. It's basic computer science.
Is this why my fucking SSD died on me? Because I installed Lords of the Fallen onto it?
Are you fucking kidding me?
SSD's are fucking expensive and a fucking $40 game just cost me over $200.
I don't want to sound like a typical american douchebag but I really want to sue someone right now.
Doesn't look like I'm missing out on much, also this fucking video.

It's gotten great reviews from almost every site, stop digging for reasons to hate it.
If this is true, I hope whoever is responsible gets asswhooped hard.
Looks like I have another reason to NEVER buy any game that uses this shit.

If you mean the mainstream ones, I wouldn't trust them too much. From the footage that is out, it does not look particularly great.

Reminds me of another game in this series.

Dragon Age 2 got great reviews as well.
ninja'd
Also I'm not using that video to justify my hate of the game. I'm quite neutral about it. I just become less and less interested the more I see.

Even typically critical people like Totalbiscuit have been pretty positive.
He even said the "ride the bull" scene is an outlier and that the rest of the writing has been good so far.
There is a lot of DRM like software that does this, but its kinda wierd it does any reading/writing to the harddisk to do so.

I haven't seen his statements on twitter about it. I hope they gave him a pre-release copy because tomorrow is going to be literal hell for him.
