If this is true, I hope whoever is responsible gets asswhooped hard.
They did what the company ask for, produce tough drm. I doubt "doesn't fry the hardware" was part of their list of requirements.
i wanna know what the folks that defended this horrible DRM on the other thread have to say now :v:
Quit being so smug. We like the idea of noon damaging DRM and supported this when that appeared to be the case.
I'm at work and can't access that forum, but has anyone explained WHY it's writing so much data? If they're using transparent encryption there shouldn't be any IO overhead. The read values make sense, the writes - not so much. [editline]18th November 2014[/editline] If it's already been cracked clearly the keys are in memory, so the encryption is pointless.
They did what the company ask for, produce tough drm. I hope people boycott these games because this is wrong. I understand wanting to get paid for the years of work you've done but this goes too far.
Put it in a ramdisk...lol
Is this why my fucking SSD died on me? Because I installed Lords of the Fallen onto it? Are you fucking kidding me? SSD's are fucking expensive and a fucking $40 game just cost me over $200. I don't want to sound like a typical american douchebag but I really want to sue someone right now.
Unless you played Lords of the Fallen for hours upon hours, I really doubt it. Correlation isn't causation but I certainly wouldn't install this shit on a SSD ever again.

Look in to it, perhaps wait a bit then see if you can track down others who may have been affected by it. If there are enough of you, turn it in to a class action.
there was nothing indicating that it was a bad drm in the other thread
All digital restrictions management is bad. It's goddamn malware at best.

If there's anyone that can start a suit because of this, it's you, since you own that game and should hopefully be able to prove it. [editline].[/editline] Even better yet: try turning it into a billion dollar suit like the RIAA/MPAA does for audio/movie pirates when they claim they've lost <x> amount of money even though the amount of money lost is probably significantly less :v: No but seriously, fucking do it. Try and get one or more SSD makers in the loop of the situation (Crucial, Kingston, Intel, etc) and they'll be pissed.
Unless you played Lords of the Fallen for hours upon hours, I really doubt it. Correlation isn't causation but I certainly wouldn't install this shit on a SSD ever again.
I played a LOT. It crashed a LOT. Then my SSD stopped working mid-game :(
If this is true, then all games that use this should be classed as malware
It's an unintentional side-effect of the DRM method used. It's not like the guys behind it actively sat around a table, twirling their moustaches and agreed "yes, YES! we should make the software perform so much I/O it breaks SSDs!". It sounds more like they looked at the market, saw people are largely using HDDs still and therefore gave fewer shits about the I/O impact of the game. Assuming these claims are actually founded and not more bullshit from people stirring the pot (every DRM goes through so, so I'm always sceptical of these sorts of claims), the developers aren't intentionally "destroying" your hardware. It's an edge case, it's not intentional, so it's not malware. Just bad software.
All digital restrictions management is bad. It's goddamn malware at best.
I say piracy is bad.
I played a LOT. It crashed a LOT. Then my SSD stopped working mid-game :(
SSDs can take a ludicrous number of write operations before they wear. Not as many as HDDs sure, but a good fucktonne. I honestly can't see how attempting to run the game multiple times would perform that many read/writes given the timespan.
I say piracy is bad.
Sure but DRM does nothing to prevent it.
Sure but DRM does nothing to prevent it.
I won't call DRM inherently bad based on current attempts. I just don't see any legitimate opposition you can have to the ideal DRM.
Sure but DRM does nothing to prevent it.
During the first few weeks of a games release, especially with new, novel DRM implementations? Sure it does, it slows the massive amounts of piracy unprotected games see. Obviously it doesn't last long, but it lasts long enough to generate a decent amount of money.
so play GTA V and cook my GPU or play GTA V and cook my SSD? first world problems
so play GTA V and cook my GPU or play GTA V and cook my SSD? first world problems
It's NOT going to have it, and we have already said this many times in this very thread.
Well, it looks like SSD and FIFA/LOTF owners will get their money back.
so play GTA V and cook my GPU or play GTA V and cook my SSD? first world problems
http://www.dualshockers.com/2014/11/06/grand-theft-auto-v-pc-version-to-use-denuvo-drm-on-top-of-steam/ the developer used the tech in Grand Theft Auto IV, but they’re not going to use it in any way on Grand Theft Auto V.
If you mean the mainstream ones, I wouldn't trust them too much. From the footage that is out, it does not look particularly great.
The people who played it think it's great. Angryjoe and RPS thought it was great. ohright those two are obviously bought out by the publishers!!!
We now have DRM that actually breaks your computer. What's next? DRM that turns your computer into an active warhead
Remember when the hackers were killed off in the beginning of Live Free or Die Hard? It'll be like that.
It's NOT going to have it, and we have already said this many times in this very thread.
i was just naming something that would have it, idk what games have this "unbreakable" drm shit

There's a fucking list in the OP. It's short.
The people who played it think it's great. Angryjoe and RPS thought it was great. ohright those two are obviously bought out by the publishers!!!
From the video where Joe played tutorial as archer, he didn't seem to think it was "great". Not bad, but nothing about it being great. Dialogue was silly, combat meh looking and not very open world from what I heard. No idea about RPS, after their social justice feminism fiasco I don't read that crap any more.

He also said he liked the characters. And just because RPS supports feminism doesn't mean their review of an RPG is immediately invalidated.
Fuck I've played 8 hours of Lords of the fallen it's installed on my HDD though, not my SSD, so I should be fine right

And just because RPS supports feminism doesn't mean their review of an RPG is immediately invalidated.
Combat as archer looked kinda cheap though. Unstealthing to get shot bonus? I don't really like how that works. I did not say RPS review was invalid, just that I have no idea about it since I don't read it. People say its good but I want to see the goodness, not read it. Too many hypes resulting in huge letdowns.
Hopefully manufacturers of SSDs will kick up a fuss about this.
I apologize but I've been looking for about 30 minutes now and I'm not finding alternative sources. It's just a couple tech enthusiast forums. Neogaf has mentioned it a bit but I don't think conversation will start until Dragon Age Inquisition releases since FIFA 15 and Lords of the Fallen are pretty niche titles on PC.
