It's probably a callback. The entire entry felt like a bit of a callback to me, to the entries featuring Jay stumbling around Alex's house like a moron.

It's neither. It's an interesting concept created by a guy on an internet forum. It sort of encompasses fears that anyone could have because he doesn't have a face. That let's you know there's no humanity in this sort of being.
