The disappearances are probably due to magnetic interference messing with the ships navigational abilities or freak waves.

That's only part of it.
But the main theory today is methane gas under the sea bed. You see, when Methane Gas erupts from the sea, it creates a huge wave, such as a tidal wave. This Methane eruption is probably why so many ships have gone missing without a clue, because they don't even have time to figure out what's happening let alone radio for help. In testing, it has been shown that ships may sink in less than 4 seconds to these massive gas eruptions.
Methane is also much lighter than air. Since many older aircraft measure altitude by air pressure, this becomes a fatal problem. Methane looks like any other ordinary cloud, however, since it is much lighter, it has less pressure. So when a plane flies through a methane gas cloud, the meters tell the pilot that he is ascending, rapidly. Even though he is flying parallel to the ground, he thinks he's going up at a very steep angle, first reaction? DIVE! So, fearing he will stall the engine, he pulls down. Unfortunately, this means he is now heading towards the seawater. And SPLASH!, the plane is never heard from again. Modern aircraft with licensed pilots have been shown to survive these methane clouds, which is why there hasn't been a disapearence since the '70s.
