• What is reddit?

I honestly don't understand the anti-reddit bandwagon that most Facepunchers generalize towards. People are talked down to for mentioning anything reddit related usually. People have attempted to defend that standpoint with "B-but all the dumb memes come from le reddit!", which is stupid because the dumb memes just come from /r/adviceanimals and /r/memes and what-not. It's like saying that Fast Threads is the embodiment of Facepunch, when it's clearly not.
Reddit is good for news and (usually) new content but I really don't like the community. I do go on Reddit and circlejerks happen a lot. If you don't make some witty or hilarious reply your post also gets buried so that's another down side. It's not really good for real discussions but if you want to see images of cats and selective news then it's not bad.
if that's your experience, you're not deep enough. I regularly see people play devil's advocate on religious/philosophical/psychological discussions, and they rarely get downvoted. The bigger a subreddit, the more of an issue. For example, hiphopheads has started getting a problem where people downvote unpopular opinions. it's not really circlejerking, because anyone who can back up their opinion or explain it well enough rarely gets downvoted in smaller subs. it's just community consensus on an idea. if you walk in with some radical new opinion and piss off everyone who doesn't hold the same opinion, you're going to be disliked. if you explain your opinion and stuff, people will respect that and upvote it. I only ever see rabid downvote brigades in the gargantuan million+ subreddits where community consensus is the end-all and any dissenting opinion, however well-reasoned, is incorrect. In almost any smaller subreddit, circlejerking is no big deal. It's absolutely no different than people getting dumb-bombed in SH. Facepunchers just don't realize that there's something past /r/all, or they just jump on the reddit-hate bandwagon without realizing that it's one of the most useful and customizable forums on the internet. It's quite literally a customized newspaper with pictures and articles and videos and music, with dozens of discussion chains for each one. [editline]9th September 2013[/editline] Anyways, I always have to rabidly defend reddit. You guys take the worst examples of subreddits filled with 12-year-olds and grandparents, the popular subreddits where most people don't even know that comments exist. Facepunch as a publicly-viewed community is pretty terrible. However, it's still a good community because of the discussions that take place. Reddit's public view is pretty fucking awful, mostly because the worst subreddits are promoted first and foremost. If people went on Facepunch and were met with a big banner for LMAO pics, everyone would think facepunch is terrible. Basically, reddit isn't a community any more than readers of the NY Times are a community. Hell, they're less of a community than that. Reddit's more like vBulletin than anything else - a hosting site for forums with a common layout. It's not remotely a single community.
Went back the other day. People missed me, amazingly.
r/worldnews is like SH on circlejerk super-steroids where America is responsible for everything wrong in the world and Muslims are subhuman
That's why I always check the sources and, more often than not, ignore the discussion below in that subreddit. People are crazy-opinionated in that one.
/r/hockey is my shit
I cannot begin to fathom how anyone can even begin to use reddit because of its awful fucking design. Like, Jesus fucking SHIT it is awful.
Hahaha this is on the facepunch subreddit
I go for r/polandball :v:
All I ever hear reddit get praise for is the voted comment system, even though other websites have had it for a long time. I hear it has unique articles and content that you won't really find elsewhere, except I probably already read more than most internet users and can most likely research things better by myself than some random guy half way across the world. Whenever you rely on just one website for news and content, you're shutting yourself off from a world of content that doesn't get posted there. Its also the only website where people refer to themselves by that community everywhere else to such an extent that they have been ostracized by a huge number of people, as if its supposed to matter what other websites you use. I have a friend who just signed up for reddit so he could go and get webhosting discounts (as if you can't just do that on webhostingforum already).
the fempire are the best subreddits, there's a few other good ones but that's mostly it

Sure, you're shutting yourself off, but you're shutting yourself off by not using reddit, too. Food-for-thought articles from blogs that you would never have found yourself, discussions. The best part of reddit isn't in the articles you can find, anyways. It's the comment system, and the chained/parented comment system. There can be hundreds of simultaneous discussions branching from different parents. You don't get that on Facepunch or SomethingAwful, you get a list of posts sorted by post order and nothing more. Voted comment systems can be found in certain other websites, but reddit's one of very few that has both a voted comment system and a parented comment system, and it is marvelous for discussion and conversation. Again, reddit shouldn't be considered "one site" any more than your RSS feed should or all vBulletin forums should. It's a huge conglomerate of whatever interests you have. If you're not a heavy internet user (like yourself), heavy internet users halfway across the world (or just casual users) can drop interesting discussion points and ideas and perspectives and articles and pictures and loads of content for you to enjoy. Reddit, when customized to almost any degree, is pretty much just an easy-to-use RSS feed that aggregates videos, pictures, and articles. Plus parented, rated comments. There's no other website like it. Sure, I can go to six different news websites to get my share of biased news and then compare them and come to my own conclusion, or you can click on a news comment link and get met with 40+ posts that tell you what's incorrect and what's correct about certain points in said article, with citations. It's less time-consuming and it's one of the most efficient content aggregation systems on the internet.
Reddit is a dumbed down, overly moderated version of 4chan and Something Awful minus the wit for mainstream audiences for people who don't know what either of those two things are.
Overly moderated? Are you kidding because the shit there runs freely, especially compared to something like SA.
Overly moderated? Are you kidding because the shit there runs freely, especially compared to something like SA.
As long as you don't post "YOU ARE A FUCKING FAGGOT CUNT NIGGER GO DIE IN THE FIRES OF HELL" SA doesn't care. Luckily that doesn't happen often.
the fempire are the best subreddits, there's a few other good ones but that's mostly it
if you are referring to SRS, no. i went there and asked some questions about feminism and I got called a shitlord and banned. I wasn't aggressive or anything, just literally something like "Could someone explain this article to me from a feminist perspective?" I guess they assumed that not being a feminist meant that I was an MRA trying to trollbait them and I got banned for that assumption. When I PMed the mod that banned me they basically told me to fuck off, even after I said I was just curious and was not a member of MRA. Plus they aggressively downvote brigade tons of posts and harass users who make any comments that are even borderline sexist. One of the worst subs on reddit, on a level even past funny or adviceanimals of terrible. Any single-sided subreddit is bad. Something like philosophy or psychology or askhistorians or askscience? Awesome, there's tons of room for talking. Music, news, sports, pictures? Plenty of room for discussion or appreciation, which is what reddit is great at. SRS, MRA, redpill, libertarian, atheism? Terrible, one-sided circlejerks with pretty much zero redeeming value if you don't already adhere to their beliefs with next to no room for discussion.
I cannot begin to fathom how anyone can even begin to use reddit because of its awful fucking design.
http://forums.somethingawful.com/banlist.php no, not really
You're posting a list of bans on probably the most popular internet forum in existence.
Reddit's voting system is genius if you think about it for like 10 seconds, but the best stuff does not infact rise to the top. Reddit weights downvotes too much, A single downvote could keep a post from every being seen again, once you hit 0, forget it. And Reddit can ban you if you ask people to vote on it for you. Which is sometimes needed to keep dicks from just mass downvoting stuff.
As long as you don't post "YOU ARE A FUCKING FAGGOT CUNT NIGGER GO DIE IN THE FIRES OF HELL" SA doesn't care. Luckily that doesn't happen often.
Well it's more if a user is being an idiot then you're free to shit on them for being an idiot; if you start randomly insulting people left right and centre you're gonna have a bad time SA has my favourite moderation policies though because you can get banned for being a bad poster; something that has the potential to be utter shit but because of the quality of the moderation ends up really enhancing post quality. The thing is, this would be fighting a lost cause if it wasn't for the entry fee; that way everyone has an investment in the forum so most people frown on bad posting, which pretty much stamps out anyone doing it deliberately, and the modteam mops up the rest.
Its actually one of the worst comment systems IMHO, I find slashdot (although you can find most articles anywhere else beforehand) much better designed and it loads and works faster; "load more comments" shouldn't be something that is on every second line.
The reason for the "load more comments" thing is that it's a pain in the ass to scroll past or collapse discussions that you aren't interested in, or that the community doesn't find worthwhile. If you want to continue the discussion, you click it. Otherwise, you'd be forced to shrink it just to reach the next tree of discussions, and it'd all get cramped and hectic fast. Slashdot tends to have much longer comments - plenty on reddit are short responses, and collapsing each individual discussion tree would be harder than just clicking "show more comments" on the ones you're already interested in. It's a matter of opinion, honestly. Once you get used to it, reddit's incredibly user-friendly and it's pretty efficient to use.
You're posting a list of bans on probably the most popular internet forum in existence.
Click any of those, they are far less than a bunch of slurs. SA is a well moderated forum.
I've been on SA before I came to Facepunch in 05 so... A really long time. It's always been like that.
"i broke the rules on got banned!! omg??????"
If a community has a rule that completely prohibits discussion, it's a shit community. Seriously, SRS is pretty much on-par with MRA, and I support feminism waaaay more often than MRA. It's just a subreddit made to point out when people say something bad about women, and then harass those people. That's a shitty way to make a point or gain support. I was alienated from feminism for a hell of a long time because my introduction was from aggravating groups who think that harassment, abuse, and "secret club!" syndrome is the way to spread their cause. also lets stop before we muck up another thread with people arguing feminism, nobody here is against it, SRS is just the home of dickheads with too much time on their hands.
I've been on SA before I came to Facepunch in 05 so... A really long time. It's always been like that.
Apologies I misinterpreted what you said
The comment system is a total cluster fuck, the whole upvoting/downvoting thing is literally a circle jerk, people still spout their "sick maymays" all the time there, it's just in general an awful site save for a few things like getting news and etc.
The voting system is pretty horrendous and you usually won't get much good discussion on the major subreddits, but it's not all bad. If you go to the right subreddits then you can find some good conversations which could never happen on Facepunch because on this site you get a simultaneous taste of the sublime and the idiotic in every thread. On reddit I've seen some actually seen some civilized discussions on religion and stuff which would normally descend into chaos if replicated via FP.

I don't think slashdot is flawless or anything, but its moderation/commenting system is leaps and bounds ahead of reddit's. This is also not even including the fact that slashdot allows anonymous commenting.
