The same reason every other fandom ever does it? Facepunch acts like fandom cross-overs are a new and awful thing when it comes to ponies. (Sonic fan art, every anime ever, etc.).
That said, a loooooot of fan art cross-overs from any fandom are absolute putrid shit. Regardless of that, art shouldn't be judged solely on the subject because some or even most of it is bad.

nonono, you don't understand my point, and I'm sorry I had to drag this topic up after it faded away for a few posts. The idea is that people do what they will with their free time, if you're not getting paid it's technically a waste of your time and talent nomatter what you do. It's fine to not like the fact that someone's drawing pony stuff even if it's good, but if it's what they want to do, then don't go out of your way to call them a waste of talent.
If you want to correct such a terrible wrong, approach them and commission them to do something not pony related, I'm sure most people will happily draw a lot of things, but as a hobby they're sticking to something they have fun with, and get some attention for. It's pretty clear that it isn't hard to stand out in the pony drawing crowd when your competition is 90% cookie cutter "yay pony" crap.
This is an odd segway, but we've been having a problem to a vaguely similar note with detlef's deer boy thing in the creative work thread. Some people over there aren't entertained by the fact she's drawn him more than once, even to the point that some have become slightly belligerent and make snide comments about things needing antlers if she draws something else now. She's drawing something she likes, not what some rude little kid who keeps whining at her wants.
If you want to argue waste of time, try. I'm sitting here bitching you out as an example, unleashing a lot of thoughts aimed at a lot of problems we have not only here but in a lot of places, regarding a lot of topics. It's my job here on the forum to sort shit out, and I don't have the time to do much else than visit a few art threads from time to time so you've got my full attention right now. And you know what? I'm paid for sitting around and speaking my mind once in a while, not even by garry but by the users, and that's worth more to me as a concept than the little bit of money.
