Only thing that I always go a bit "why" at is when an artist shows quick, even good improvement - then suddenly simply [b]stops[/b] because of sudden increase in blind praise on dA/FA/whatever.

the reason people get into drawing porn and popular junk like ponies is because there's money in it vs just making something for the fun of it, strictly speaking on terms of "within dA/FA". Between commissions and making small artbooks that sell over time like slugbox does, it's way more in your interest and a practical application of ability. Fetish stuff fetches a pretty price because not many artists fit that bill but clearly there's people out there who want it.

I can't talk for everyone who does this because I know there's people who fit the weird hobbyist that does stuff for shits, giggles and pocket change that you're talking about, but I've been discussing this very thing with slugbox on and off for a while now and it really does boil down to whether you want to pay your bills, even if it's just supplemental cash on top of a part or full time job. For instance, he pays for an apartment and utility bills, food and care for him, his fiance (who's also a self-sustaining artist) and their pets, and is looking to get a new car because his current one is failing. His [i]only[/i] source of income is from spending his time drawing tentacle porn and humanized mlp character parodies often involved in the same tentacle haberdashery.
Granted he does enjoy drawing porn (honestly should be a requirement if you get into that business) but to him it's work more than play, even if he's drawing something he's drawing just for his own interests, he's still thinking business and making sure it fits in with an artbook's theme or something so he can make some cash off it. A good portion of his day is spent advertising, networking, and doing behind the scenes business to keep things in order, and in some of his freetime he goes off to draw things he likes; he'll actually draw [url=http://s3.amazonaws.com/data.tumblr.com/tumblr_m0vv213ZEm1qjryfno1_1280.png]fan art[/url] or [url=http://s3.amazonaws.com/data.tumblr.com/tumblr_m0y0xjEMzj1r5wduoo1_1280.png]gift art[/url] of things not involved in porn all the time, even if it's drawn all sexy or whatever, it's just not the stuff that ends up in the spotlight and that clearly signals that tending to his money-wielding audience is time better spent.
