Sure, popularity on the Internet is a good weapon but IRL people tend to be more mature and richer than the ones on Internet. I would personally rather have little public of people willing to pay my artwork than depending on thousands of fans who won't even buy anything (mostly because they're minors, like a majority of members on dA).
Just depending on DA's popularity is just dumb.

more watchers = more potential clients
A larger audience generally means a bigger chance of finding someone with a big wallet who wants your service.
More watchers gives you a lot of opportunity to get some money through commissions.
When you're making money off of your fake fame, then you can be proud of it.
