I figure that's because Rule 34 is now an established concept and A) people are actively making money off of it and B) communications platforms centered around it (and art communities in general) are way more common, populated and intertwined.
So I don't think it's the fandom, it's simply that the internet's "evolution" has made it better at picking up shows and making porn off of it. The rest of the magic is just the magnitude of this show in combination with vocal minorities/pictures so strange or extreme they stick in your head more vividly.

What makes the comic magnitudes better in my opinion is that it does the things right Preston fails at. Frequently his comics rely on a visual joke at the end for example, like extreme expressions or him suddenly dressing like a pirate and downloading software or something. Or breaking the three-panel-rule-of-thumb and still delivering a joke with just the right pacing. Hell it even does the strawman right because it's using him for a simple joke, not to win an argument, not to prove something. Plus many different styles when one of Preston's latest comics was about his disability to experiment with different styles. Absolutely lovely.
It's probably unintentional, but I can't help but find it great because of that regardless.
