Spending too much time on FA has lowered my standards so that any character that's portrayed with personality beyond pop-culture references and sticking their breasts/genitals in people's faces are pretty good.

Hah... I guess I'm 90% better then the internet at it then. My second main story character is so different from how I act and has such a developed personality that when I hold roleplays with people I've never done it with before, they swear up and down that it's a different person typing for that character.
I wish creativity was broader then good design for some people. Because I've seen some DAMN WELL designed characters but the personality was just a mary sue/gary stu hollow shell of a "person."

It isn't really a well designed character if the personality doesn't match up with their looks. So unless the character looked really generic then it must have been poorly designed if it's personality is that of a generic soulless character that could be used as a background character.
Good character design requires good personality and backstory and vica versa.

It's generally okay from the moment the characters aren't completely unfitting in their own universe, do have a certain appealing design, with an interesting background & personnality (That do not make them as 'Mary-Sue' characters, aka 'being loved by everyone for no real reason, being all powerful, no actual flaws, or resolving story conflicts without any effort').

Yeah... I avoid that as much as possible. And once someone called my two main characters mary sue/gary stu because their power was slightly influenced by Egyptian Gods.
Their logic: omg if tehyre influensed by gods thne theyre op!!!!!!!!1
No, dumbshit, it's not AWESOME UBER GODLY POWER influence, it's minor. Almost non-existent. If anything the fact that they're being watched over by them is more prominently shown then any power influence until the end of the first half of the story. [I]Then[/I] it's extremely obvious for the main character, but still to make it non-OP, such power has a high chance of killing her or making her extremely weak for the rest of her life.
I hate it when people say that your character(s) is OP/Godmodded like that just because they have some sort of personal connection to a God, minor or not, made up for their story or in an actual religion.

Read "belgrath the sorcerer" series. The main character is a fucking god who when he needed to get from point a to b Ripped apart a continent and pulled the two ends together, yet had a reason to do so and the capability within his logical power base.
Hence the only thing that matters is ,"how non shallow and awesome is this character?".
