Sorry for asking a question and it spawning a conversation. It was still on topic pretty much, by talking about how 90% of DeviantART has shitty original characters. Could have been, a little less rude about it. But whatever.
Me being upfront and telling you how to make awesome characters is Rude? aw, I think your going to cry... I know you are not really going to cry. However, Come on, have more pride then that or your characters are all going to be emo douche bags who "care" about what others think. Sure you can have a few of those, but if all your characters are that then you might as well make Sonic Oc's. Or whatever prepubescence turd blob for a personality/character design that someone suggested to you because they have no imagination or they haven't spent time developing it. So like a fetus with not enough time in the womb it falls on it's head upon birth and just splatters all over the floor. Fetus Angst! Awesome fetus angst! See the difference? One doesn't give a shit about looking cewl, but inherent coolness from the air around it. Heck I am 99% most certain this character if it was fleshed out would be a thousand times more interesting then any oc fucktard that cares about what people think. The true badass hears everything. Acknowledges it, but only takes form it what he wants. Will reject ideas he doesn't care about. Doesn't rebel without a reason. Takes everything in stride. keeps on, keepin on. Also, he doesn't "force" trying to be a badass and fails at it as a result. Or breaks and becomes psycho for "attention". This picture of a grasshopper's very existence, proves how those two above pictures suck.
I was calling this bit rude:
Now end it, make your characters how you wish and never post about such Here.
Sorry for the misunderstanding. I'll just stop here.
Yeah... I avoid that as much as possible. And once someone called my two main characters mary sue/gary stu because their power was slightly influenced by Egyptian Gods. Their logic: omg if tehyre influensed by gods thne theyre op!!!!!!!!1 No, dumbshit, it's not AWESOME UBER GODLY POWER influence, it's minor. Almost non-existent. If anything the fact that they're being watched over by them is more prominently shown then any power influence until the end of the first half of the story. Then it's extremely obvious for the main character, but still to make it non-OP, such power has a high chance of killing her or making her extremely weak for the rest of her life. I hate it when people say that your character(s) is OP/Godmodded like that just because they have some sort of personal connection to a God, minor or not, made up for their story or in an actual religion.
Personally, Power isn't the main problem (except when it's applied to the main character, where in that case, it's a little more tricky), it all depends how you represent it in the comic/graphic novel. But I'll admit that the concept of a main character (without any powers) that have to deal with antagonists who have enhanced AND dangerous abilities/powers, is far more interesting to me (This forces the hero to use tactics rather than brute force). Most of the time I see original characters on dA, the hero has an elementary power (which tends to be often the fire) while being the last survivor/descendant of a cursed bloodline. That trend has been overused so many times. Personnality/Design is one of the main subjects to focus on when developping a character. There are no real secrets apart of studying how people act, while interacting with them IRL. That and doing research when you're about to use cultural/historical references to the background story and design. The most common mistake is also to give huge stereotypes to your characters, making them more caricatures than real characters. Easiest example on that matter would be Preston, who does with everything like that (especially when he portrays lesbian people as some kind of freak circus show) because of his huge lack of studying.
I decided to take a plunge into the horrible depths of deviantART for the first time in ages. Of course, the first thing I come across is a pony porn pic (NSFW) which doesn't even have a mature tag on it. I make a comment about it on the artist's profile page, which he proceeds to ignore among the other comments pointing out the same thing. Then I look at the person's gallery and just decide to leave the site. Either deviantART doesn't care (I wouldn't be surprised), or they have weird criteria for defining mature content.
Maybe they can't draw mouths so they just make masks instead. Clever way to hide your artistic flaws. :v:
When I was 8 I covered mistakes in my drawings with explosions.
something tells me you're probably better off getting the proper manufactured springy stilts, these look like they're going to wear down on you because you have no shock absorbency
Those powerbocking things? Those don't really have the same gait as something bipedal with digitigrade feet would, plus it'd probably be a pain in the ass to put fur and shit on. Someone in a seven foot fursuit bouncing around like they're on a trampoline is an amusing mental image though.
So i ordered some of the darkness comics recently, What better way to celebrate than looking up the main character in deviantart!
Quick question, what's your guys' opinions on actual original characters that aren't part of any fandom?
There's a deep dark valley of recolor OCs a person spent the entirety of 30 seconds to think up, but once you pass that you'll find me interested. In pretty much every kind of character. Doesn't matter what genre or what level a writer you are, if you're genuinely interested in storytelling and character design I'm instantly interested in what you came up with and will keep listening and ask questions until I notice I'm reaching the uncomfortable territory of lolidunnodidntthinkofthat. Sturgeon's law is still in effect, but I'm always excited at the possibility of stumbling across new concepts. That's where real creativity and art begin for me... so yeah. Very recently took up doing character requests for people that can't draw but have written them out. Pretty interesting stuff you find once in a while there. Also, mind me pitching some details about your chars via PM? I wasn't lying when I wrote I'm generally interested in this kind of stuff.
Wrong thread, also nobody cares about "character balance" unless it's a video game.
Err actually getting "character balance" wrong as you put it is one of the most common pitfalls of amateur writers as they create Mary Sues that master every challenge without any problems. That's just boring and detaching from the audience. And if you're publishing a character to the web you should be concerned about an audience, because you're gonna get one and there's no reason to share a character with people only you want to be interested in. Seriously, character design isn't a linear scale between "hue hue hue it's awesome because laser-eyed robot zombie pirate bears with an explosion in the background" and "Ikari Shinji without relatability". Maybe it is for 14-year-olds that buy everything that has a big "AWESOME!!! MEGA COOL!!!" in bright Comic Sans on it, but beyond that it branches out.
Most of the time I see original characters on dA, the hero has an elementary power (which tends to be often the fire) while being the last survivor/descendant of a cursed bloodline. That trend has been overused so many times.
I'd actually like to see someone that takes these staples and does it *right*. Just throwing fire around is boring (if you've gotten used to it by now). Using it in creative ways like a mix of FMA and Avatar defuses the powerlevel aspect of it and puts more emphasis on the character's wit however, while still being capable of crafting visually impressive scenes. Last survivors are also rarely afflicted with anything other than "oh look it's the lone badass wolf" and heroes are usually only Cursed With Awesome. So I guess my point is the tropes aren't bad, the common executions are just bland and shallow.
There are no real secrets apart of studying how people act, while interacting with them IRL. That and doing research when you're about to use cultural/historical references to the background story and design.
I think there are a lot of secrets and tricks to be learned actually. One common flaw even advanced writers tend to have is when writing action heroes is separating the hero's adventures from his character development and relationships instead of fusing it together. It's a bit like Gameplay And Story Segregation in videogames. For beginners there's also a whole list of common pitfalls to avoid, from cliché to Mary Sue to character death as a purely dramatic device or to tie up lose plot strings (instead of using it in low doses so they don't lose their impact, and only if the death of a character has sufficiently more interesting effects on its environment than the character staying alive - that's also when an audience becomes more acceptant of a character's death because they know all the other cool stuff that happened afterwards wouldn't have been possible otherwise. Simon's character development in Gurren Lagann anyone?). And there's also tricks to be picked up like creating the illusion a character has depth by creating two basic personas for them, one they present the outside and one showing how they feel on the inside. It's not real depth, but it's enough for making secondary characters or extras likable and interesting instead of plot devices. Speaking of which, a lot of people seem to forget humor in their stories completely. They can make characters look very human with very little effort if done right (and not just ironic smug remarks). Sorry for bland "yeah it's bad but we've seen it a thousand times already" stuff grabbed from the Newest page. I was coming into this thread with a real ~cunt destroyer~ selling his art with hilarious overconfidence (and even more hilarious prices), but by the time I finished writing all these responses the deviations were already deleted. So err sorry for that boring wall of text, I'll try to make up for it eventually.
