He is self aware of how shitty the joke was yet he still decides to go with it. Amazing.

The only way I could see it having at least a modicum of comedy was if they had opted for the cliché ending where someone rushes in off panel and interrupts the joke with physical violence. And even then it'd be really cheap and barely funny.
