Am I only one that finds the design of the ponies, old gen or new gen, ugly and revolting instead of cute? Also, they look almost nothing like horses.

Oh hey i'll look for art of medievil one of my favorite games on the original playstation. Just like Sonic they're easy to draw which means all the kids (and spergs) everywhere can doodle them to their heart's content. They're also easy to animate quickly whilst keeping the general look of the show intact which means they save a lot in animation expenses when making episodes. Plus the abstraction isn't [I]that[/I] horrible. You can easily see that they're supposed to be some sort of horse-esque quadrupeds. That's not to say that I'm not sick and tired of them already. The "art" of drawing ponies is just as stale as drawing sonic stuff. There's no innovation in it anymore because it's so easy to stick to a formula.

It's practically a fucking decorate-it-yourself template.
