Live television isn't that simple, when the commercial packet is finished airing, they have to go live, they don't exactly have a choice.
The only other option would have been to go live to a bunch of small talk.

If a person goes to a job interview and is called in to talk to the interviewer but isn't present because they had to go to the bathroom, that will reflect poorly on them, regardless of cause or gender. How do you think a world leader will feel during an urgent diplomatic talk, or indeed the American voting public?
