• How I became the Worst Moderator Ever
I did do that.
I'm still convinced you ARE Kabuto.
At least you're not as bad as Pr3dator. Yeah, he isn't a mod but still he probably caused the most damage so far.
Zing is an alt of an idiot. Saying "Black guys like chicken" is still racist because jokes/memes and insults are derived like that. Example; saying "Mexicans are good at leaving mexico"
I remember how I stopped posting in the Mass Effect subforum because it was like playing Russian Roulette every time I posted. For example, I said that I agreed with Cerberus' "ends justify the means" ideology and he banned me for something like "wants to experiment on abandoned children" or something. It wasn't a joke ban, he was being serious. I couldn't care less about the whole Jessie whatever-the-fuck-her-name-is, but methinks banning someone for a statement that was made in the context of a video game grants him the title. I mean, that'd be like banning someone for racism if they said "I hate druids," in a WoW subforum. I think TH89 is an excellent poster and I don't have anything against him, but he's just a really crappy moderator.
Now that I am officially the Worst Moderator Ever, thanks in large part to that hellion Jessi Slaughter and her muggle parents, I thought it would be good to offer my perspective on what went down that fateful day. [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/NhyfX.jpg[/img_thumb] Before The Fall I wasn't always the worst moderator ever. People used to think I was pretty cool, at least when I wasn't banning people for talking about black people. Or if they didn't, they kept quiet about it. The moderators thought I was such a good moderator that they elected me Lead Mod along with Dragon! Even my old-time nemeses like mephis spoke of my banning fairness in all things, peace and war. I put in many hours going through reports, cleaning up after spammers, answering PMs, and checking the refugee camp regularly. I always reduced people's bans if they said they were sorry. Nobody is perfect, but I took moderating seriously and tried to do the best job I could. New Rules At some point, Garry decided to turn Facepunch into a for real business, which made everyone here very proud. Now, one of the important things about running a business is avoiding the appearance of impropriety. We had to make sure warez was not discussed, etc. At one point, I can only assume Garry decided Facepunch's reputation for participating in 4chan-style forum bombings and raids, and 4chan memes in general. It had always been kind of sort of against the rules, but this time it was serious. So one day, Mr. Gestapo posted an announcement in the mod forum. I don't remember the exact wording, but the gist of it was that we were now to take a zero-tolerance policy on participation in or discussion of 4chan raids and harassment. Permabans were to be issued. Jessi Slaughter, Part 1 Then along came this Jessi Slaughter thing. Kid makes obnoxious video, 4chan decides to ruin her life, hilarity ensues. My personal feeling was that it was in pretty poor taste, given that she was obviously suffering from pretty horrible self-esteem problems and probably neglected by her parents. "Hey, Mr. Gestapo," I said. "Some of these people are basically cheering on 4chan in this. Does this fall under the purview of the zero-tolerance policy on 4chan? Should I permaban them?" "Go for it," said Mr. Gestapo, and so I did. So did several other moderators, although I did the majority of the bans. Now, mass bannings are not unprecedented. Veteran users will remember the "idiot culls," and I and one or two other mods fumigated a couple Nazi groups back when groups were introduced for the first time. Jessi Slaughter, Part 2 Somewhere in the middle of this it began to become clear that something had gone terribly wrong. For one thing, it was difficult to draw the line between out-and-out advocacy of 4chan style raiding and general dislike for the kid. In a severely misguided effort to be fair, I just banned everyone who said that she "deserved it." And there were so, so many. [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/jG5nR.jpg[/img_thumb] Many people, mostly GD regulars did not take well to the total extermination of their friends. They challenged the bans, flooding the forum with angry posts. Already in a nasty mood after learning a friend of mine was in jail for domestic violence against another good friend of mine, and, at that moment, full of contempt for people who would advocate the bullying of a child (ironic in retrospect) I made my second mistake, which was to argue back aggressively and arrogantly. I said dumb things like "who said moderating had to be fair" (which had a well-reasoned argument behind it, but one which I failed to make) and made the whole thing look even more vindictive than it was. Jessi Slaughter, Part 3 I think I went to bed at some point. As I mentioned before, I reduce people's bans in the refugee camp all the time, and I had planned to go through the refugee camp the next day and sort through the threads. It wasn't something I was looking forward to, but given the negative reaction from FP and the vast number of people involved I figured it needed to be done. I was, of course, spared this task when Garry logged on to find this whole mess and permabanned me. I learned later it wasn't intended to actually be permanent, but to learn me what it felt like to be permabanned from a forum after spending so much time there. The point was well taken, and I remind myself of that every time I consider permabanning a user. I apologized to Garry, and he told me some words of wisdom about how I cannot be an effective moderator if everyone hates me. I thought that was a good point. Conclusion So, having established that my banning spree was partially based on prior instructions to keep 4chan stuff away from Facepunch, was done with permission, and was not the sole work of Me, and since most of you are not mad at me about anything in particular right now, I figured it would be a good moment to apologize to you guys for the things I did do wrong. I erred on the side of banning and banned people for advocating raiding when they really weren't. That's not fair. I'm sorry. I treated people overly harshly because of an unrelated personal problem. You don't need that. I'm sorry. When you guys questioned my judgment, which you have every right to do, I blew you off rudely. That was an inexcusable act of arrogance. I'm sorry. These were the mistakes that made me the Worst Moderator Ever. I regret having made them and will try very hard not to make them again. I hope this thread has cast some light on my role in this fiasco that hurt my constituents and the people around me and I did not have intercourse with that woman. Thank you. [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/sYC3y.jpg[/img_thumb] P.S. Vote Galactopticon
i thought it was because u were black
Zing is an alt of an idiot. Saying "Black guys like chicken" is still racist because jokes/memes and insults are derived like that. Example; saying "Mexicans are good at leaving mexico"
Do you know what racism is? What makes a phrase racist isn't the ability to make a joke or meme out of it.
When I was on a previous account you helped me out a ton. I still think you're a fantastic moderator, regardless of your mistakes. [editline].[/editline] I should probably snip that, but I think you need to know that you're still great in my eyes.
Eh, I guess I can still go gay for you Th89. Forgiven.
My 05 account was permabanned by Garry in some "Raid this TF2 server" thread even though I didn't actually do any raiding or show support for it. Granted I did say Garry didn't care about Facepunch's reputation and instead of calling him Garry called him Gayry and got permabanned with the reason "Wrong". I'd lurked for a good three years on and off then actually started posting, was on my way to Goldie and checked the site every day, still do. It sucked pretty hardcore but oh well I was able to make a new account. Still I understand people being pretty damned pissed off about being mass permabanned for a remark.
If you're talking about practical knowledge, you can use your common sense. If a poster says, "All Asian people are fat MMO addicts" it's safe to assume they are looking down on Asian people because of a stereotype. There's no universal mechanic to determine whether or not a stereotype implies inferiority, however.
Stereotypes inherently dehumanize people, but that's another discussion. I think we agree on my basic point, which is that stereotypes can be racist, and this sentiment:
You ban someone for a goddamn stereotype, and only when it's against blacks. Stereotypes are not fucking racism
creates a false dichotomy by implying that "racist" and "stereotype" are mutually exclusive characteristics, an idea that doesn't really stand up to a modicum of scrutiny. I'm not like, a loose cannon cop.

I never got angry with you
Hi! When I'm losing an argument, I pull out my thesaurus.
TH89: not a crook
Hi! When I'm losing an argument, I pull out my thesaurus.
Yes. How dare I know words. Notice how he uses anti-intellectualism to divert attention away from the post he doesn't have an answer for, while accusing me of doing exactly that. :)
"Intellectualism"? Is that how you justify using overly specific and large words so you can remove non-native speakers from the argument? [editline]24th November 2010[/editline] :)
Okay, do you want me to rewrite my post with fewer big words?
Yes. What point do you want an answer for, by the way? That some stereotypes are racist? I'm not disputing that.
Oh, Pling is here. He is a cool moderator because he likes Top Gear.
Yes.

If you're talking about practical knowledge, you can use your common sense. But that's a much more complicated area of discussion, and it would be better not to go into it. I think we agree on my basic point, which is that stereotypes CAN sometimes be racist, and this idea:
You ban someone for a goddamn stereotype, and only when it's against blacks.
What point do you want an answer for, by the way? That some stereotypes are racist? I'm not disputing that.
Well, remember I was actually arguing with Zing before. Then you came in and I said "I agree with you, but Zing is wrong because xxx" and you were suddenly BELLIGERENT and I don't know
EXCUSE ME, professors, but "Black people like fried chicken" is bad in the mod team's book because historically black people in america have been dehumanized to crude sambo characters in minstrel shows. "Black people like fried chicken" has with it almost 200 years of incredible racism and bigotry behind it. no fucks are given, don't except people to disregard historical context just because it was "a joke".

In 90% of your bullshit bans, the stereotypes are not racist. There is a stereotype that all Asians have squinty eyes; is Mulan racist?
Let me restate it. In 90% of your bullshit bans, the stereotypes are not racist. I'm happy to explain my reasoning behind any given ban, but people complaining about my racism bans seem reluctant to use actual examples, for some reason. It's always some weird imagined hyperbole.
"women should be in the kitchen" is a stereotype that isn't banned for yet i think it should be not even for sexism, but because anyone who says it is automatically an awful human being and not funny
i like you th89 but stop drawing so much attention to yourself and your actions the more you do it the more you will be criticized
Was I the only one who was actually happy when all the 4chan kids got permad? You were all unbanned, TH89 served a punishment then said sorry. You guys and winge and cry all you want but it's falling upon deaf ears.
i like you th89 but stop drawing so much attention to yourself and your actions the more you do it the more you will be criticized
Are you kidding dude look at all those heart ratings
You're an awful debater; that was an example of a non-racist stereotype
any stereotype could be used in a racist way
Are you kidding dude look at all those heart ratings
That is a very egotistical response. Sounds like you just want attention and love from everyone.
