I guess that explains some things, I'm pretty blind anyway (hardcore glasses lenses)
My dad's also colourblind to green and blue I think.

:frown:
Heh, you're pretty lucky then. My buddy can't tell difference between green and blue. And red/orange/yellow.
I fucked up so hard. I got 48.
I'm confused 0 is good right?
0 is a perfect score

My first post of actual content. Drawing of samurai from movie 7 samurai (with reference).
Been drawing this in my literature class, picture taken with Iphone heh. cnc if you want lol!

No shading because shading is gay heh. also done with mechanical pencil
I haven't posted anything in such a long time. I'm too afraid that my teacher would search for it on the internet and see the work and then give me an F or something because he would think it's plagiarism.
New avatar though.

That was so fun.

Here's a time lapse video recording of one of my recent digital paintings, managed to recover it after it got corrupted. Original was about 3 hours, sped it up to 5 minutes so you guys don't get bored to death.
Quite nice, the shoulder's shadow should be reviewed though it comes off flat, what canvas size did you use?
I need advice on digital painting, to blend the colours is it ok to smudge? or is that shunned upon?

End result is pretty much square: 1100x1100 give or take a few pixels.

Normally shunned upon, if you don't know what you're doing.
so how do you blend colours?
Easiest way is to work in grayscale and make the values in there then add color, makes it smoother. Lazy Lions video shows the proper way to do it. Pay attention to the layers and the way he selects the colors and how he mainly uses the brush tool.
so how do you blend colours?
Combination of manual blending, as in keep choosing the right colors and placing them over and over and over each other until the area gets nice and smooth. I also use a bit of the brush mixer to give my paintings a sort of choppy feel in areas I don't want to be the focal point, it blends, but it blends very choppily like the smudge tool. Lastly I might use the blur, but only on areas that are waaay far away from the focal point that I want people not to notice, and even then I'll go over the blurred area manually so it doesn't look too artificially done.

Ok so what he does is he uses his pen pressure to change the opacity allowing him to add different shades of gray then he adds colour right? However, I remember Detlef saying that low opacity painting is bad for beginners, is this what he was talking about or is that something else?

I think Detlef was referring to using low opacity brushes that aren't based on pressure sensitivity, like if you were to set the opacity of the brush at like 50% and use a mouse.
Pretty much he is mimicking how our eyes function, things that are the focus/ in light are more defined then objects in shadow or not the main focus. Painters tend to do the most important part in high detail then put less effort into the other sections. If you study the video lion spends the most time on creating proper anatomy and the face. As long as the painting follows certain rules, you can make most of the piece lack detail as those rules make sense to the brain and allows it to find the image believable.
No, I was not saying to change the opacity. You generally tweak the flow or spacing slightly and use the color picker to find the mid tone of gray you want and you work your way down from 2 or 3 large shades to many.

I also like your technique or putting a layer on soft light and then using it to colour in -sorry if this is a well known technique I normally edit videos and make posters i don't normally paint-

Yeah while I was researching digital paintings I noticed that they didn't add a uniform amount of detail to everything but it still looked good
things that are the focus/ in light are more defined then objects in shadow or not the main focus.
Oh and about this thing, normally this is what painters do, give more detail in light areas and leave shadows more murky and clouded. But recently I've noticed that our eyes tend to be more relaxed when looking at shadowed areas rather than brighter in light areas. In light areas our pupils dilate and flex. This causes a bit of strain which is noticeable when compared to a shadowed low light areas which is more relaxing to look at and makes people try to look at a shaded area of an object rather than the brightly lit part. With this I recently started trying to make my shadowed areas more detailed than the brightly lit areas, to give the same effect of having someone rather look at the shadowed area rather than the brightly light area. Not sure how well it worked though.

Pretty damn cool test. Was harder than I thought but glad to know everything's all right when it comes to color.

Already done that before, got perfect colour vision. I dunno about you guys but when they're out of order they almost highlight in my mind, become really easy to spot.
ok i did it again to see if ive gotten any worse
