First off my initial reaction is that the compass is too detailed for the text.
Second, the compass doesn't contribute at all to integration with the text. As in if you look into a lot of popular logos or what ever, they tend to be integrated into the text.
Third might just be me personally, but with the compass pointing to the top left, my eyes are constantly being drawn up their if I like it or not.
Just my 2 cents.
I was trying to have a level of contrast with the detail going on, is this bad? I didn't want my text to be too dirty/grungy and too shape-involved along the same lines as my logo as that would communicate the wrong message (me being a grungy type guy or very alternative). I really wanted to touch base with a calm-and-nice introverted feel but at the same time show a sense of complexity, earthiness and roughness, so I geared my compass logo in that vein.
What do you mean by integration? Do you mean lettermarks? I wanted to stay away from having my logo involving a lettermark. And a lot of popular logos doesn't mean that every logo should involve such things, i.e. a lettermark works better for companies that have a large enough budget to educate their audience about their brand through other means versus having a visually interesting symbol.
Unless you meant literally having the letters be the form of the logo in itself (i.e. something like the FedEx arrow). In which case, I'm not sure such an approach would be appropriate for what I want to communicate about myself.
On the third point, I was thinking about using the lines as a basis for the design layout on my other stuff (i.e. business card). I think a lot of having your eyes drawn to that corner might have to do with the logo being the only element on the page, therefore is much more commanding of attention.
EDIT: I apologize if it seems like I'm bashing my critiques, I'm just trying to rationalize it by "thinking out loud" so I can make appropreate improvements afterward or get ideas :v:
I tried turning my logo so the main orientation was pointing towards my wordmark, I think it definatly improved it despite being a subtle change. Especially since the lines from the north end of the logo match up pretty well with the shape of the letters.

Also, I'd like to ask for your guy's opinions on "creative" resume/coverletter sizes and designs beyond the standard 8.5" x 11". I was always under the impression that you should keep your stuff to a standard as employers/clients don't want to deal with an oddly shapped or sized resumes and coverletters. However a lot of student examples I've seen at school went wild with their actual letter/resume shapes, designs and sizes (some of which were done in a brochure fold for example).
Is this actually a bad idea to do, or does it really matter all that much what size, shape, and fold your resume/cover letter is at?
Okay final version probably
A little rough but I love the concept. Would really shine with great pictures (i.e. the first picture is a little compositionally weak plus over exposed). The last picture is the best I feel because it has good composition and the picture itself isn't too blurry/overexposed. Some of the shadows seem lacking though on the actual figures.
Thanks. I think if I was an actual photographer or even if I had a semi decent camera I would have taken the photos myself. Instead, they are all just from a google image search. On top of that, I was so concerned with the shapes and finishing it all in time to print and mount and turn them in, I didn't even consider editing the photograph backgrounds. I can see now that I should have. Oh well, I'm pretty happy with them and I think I'll get a good grade on them.
The thing that bugs me about those images stupid 07'er is that the perspective on the block things doesn't line up with the surrounding structures. Let me show you.

That little bit in the middle is clearly at an angle, but it integrates into the environment as if it were perpendicular to the grate. The other one to the right you should be able to see the top of, but it's drawn as if you're seeing it from below. It would also go right through the ground.
So it kind of breaks the illusion and it looks pasted on top.
ok yeah i hear ya
I asked this question in Fast Threads a week or so ago, and didn't get a response, maybe I'll have better luck here.

Does anyone know off the top of their head how to make a brush in Photoshop snap to a path you draw with the pen tool? I'd really like to be able to stroke a path, while still having control over the pressure with my tablet.
Pretty much this feature:

Never heard of such a function before.

although he could make a mask and then paint, meaning he makes a pen path really thick and masks it so he can only draw in that area.

Yeah, but it wouldn't be the same at all.
Anything outside the masked area would just be clean cut.

best I could think of, he could feather the mask / use a textured brush for the mask

Forget the colors, work in grayscale. You're not ready to get into colors yet.
Are we allowed to post wip website designs in here?

It doesn't really fit in another thread, so I guess so.
It's creative work so go for it.
Are we allowed to post executables here or flash files?

Been working on a design for a textbook rental website for some company.

I'm doing the whole design for the site while my brother codes it. The rest of the team is in charge of everything else (marketing, supplying books etc. and whatever else there is).

You know I've never been quite sure myself. I think I would most likely keep it separated. Give a professional cover letter / resume to show that I will be an intelligent asset to their company, and then give a separate folder or binded portfolio. It also depends where you are applying. If it is a design based company, then there will be a bit more lee-way I would imagine.

Very nice, well put together and pleasing to look at, tad on the generic side by now, but what can you do?
Could not agree more. No criticisms.

It doesn't really give a solid and competent feel, more like playful and light hearted. Which aren't qualities I usually connect to textbooks and rental stores. The design itself looks very nice and clean but I'd never use a service like that if my friends hadn't tried it first, it just looks that much generic and not serious.

I'd also make the banner where the monkey is smaller so it doesn't eat so much space.
