I'd try to sharpen up the shapes with a really hard brush or even eraser and not try to make the plane shaded so smooth and with so much white. Keep the shapes separate.

try working without layers. I try to have as few layers as possuble when I paint, mostly I paint on one

I use multible but every time I am about to start new phase of shading I make a new one incase I fuck up. IF I don't i merge it with the previous layer if I do I erase it.
