And mouth is done. Might lighten up the glisten on the black areas some, and redo the teeth. Not sure just yet. But if anything, it's a start.

The colouration of the nose and tongue is way too saturated I think.
Also, you really need to stop using 1px brushes for everything. The highlights for the wetness of the mouth look really sharp and aliased. Go easy on trying to replicate every tiny detail and go for the overall feel of things. People aren't going to notice 80% of your work at this rate anyways.

You know that tiger teeth aren't really that sharp right?
The knowledge you need to do Graphic design is close to that of drawing with it's own things here and there of course. And it's useful to know how to draw in order to make illustrations for the design.
but graphic design encompasses so much that it's pointless to say that it's "close to that of drawing". i might as well say "it's close to that of product design" "it's close to that of advertising" or anything.
sure, for graphic design you need a good eye for colour and composition, but i know plenty of good designers who can't draw for shit.

How the fuck do I paint? I accidently postprocessed some tones into blue edition!

Looks like you need to water down your paints a bit more.
You're using acrylic, right?

Hmm? Graphic Design is product design and advertising.
And I never said you had to know how to draw. I said it was a plus to know how to draw.
I think I am more suited for Graphic Design but I still hate myself for it sometimes.
I've been working on this for a magazine for a little bit on Friday night and a little Saturday morning.
I was inspired by my friend who is studying Graphic Design in college.
http://milkysblog1.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!69E669C40372A444!389.entry
I decided to base it off Valve and some of their interesting games (I say interesting because I'm putting Ricochet in there). I plan on making this a very long project if I can keep myself doing it. I think I'll keep it up because of how diverse I want the magazine to be.
Any advice on how to do something like this?

[img_thumb]http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5095/5500563775_c17d20f5e9_z.jpg[/img_thumb]
Pages aren't in order. The outline isn't finished either which is probably something I should do right away so I have something to follow. Might do that tomorrow.
I'm still iffy on the half tone I used.
Any advice is welcome.
(i'm actually doing an editorial brief right now :v: )
okay the main spread i'm going to focus on now is this one

1st consideration: margins!!
you don't appear to have any sort of grid system or anything to work from. you need at the very least an outside border to work from, otherwise all your content gets pushed to the edge of the page and looks very messy. for a gaming magazine i don't expect it to have much of a border (unlike a lot of arty magazine which go mental for whitespace) but you still need one.
2nd consideration: type
your title font is okay, and the subtitles for the founders is alright, but your body font is just awful. serif fonts should be used with caution, and with something modern like gaming i would recommend a sans-serif over Times any day.
3rd consideration: continuity
your fonts differ in size from one founder to the next, as do the size of the pictures. i appreciate pictures won't be the same size, but this is why we crop. and they don't even have to be the same, but as it is they look quite disproportionate.
as for your halftone background, i actually quite like it. adds a bit of depth to the page without being too distracting. but as for that perforated line? what even is that?
i'm gonna make you a quick little mock up of what i mean so hopefully you can see what i'm trying to explain :P
Hmm? Graphic Design is product design and advertising.
it's just as much product design and advertising as it is drawing.
[editline]6th March 2011[/editline]
also generally if you're working for a commercial client you'll outsource the drawings to an illustrator, who may or may not be a part of your design team.

No not really.
Because when you are a graphic designer you will actually make product designs (amongst other things). You do not neccessarily draw anything.
Depends on how proffessional it is and how much of a budget you got. Be a freelancer and it might just be a problem.
okay sorry what i should have said was:
If you are doing a piece of work that includes an amount of illustrative work (i.e. drawing/art) then you are most likely to outsource, since you have trained as a Graphic Designer and not an Illustrator.
if you want to be a freelancer then i would suggest having some skills/skilled friends. i, however, want to work in a design company where an illustrator is part of the team.
C&C and also im thinking of coloring it in psychedelic colors

Won't disagree there. But personally I'm trying to gain the skills to be multifunctional with graphic design as my main focus.
progress on the design for my portfolio
i changed the blues and the header now has a subtle gradient and there's more space between the different elements

The ultra thin fonts are kinda hard to read.
[editline]6th March 2011[/editline]
And I don't like the gradient.

okay this is a really shoddy attempt and still needs a lot of work, but can you see what i mean about organising it a bit better and making use of margins and stuff? just keeps it neater and more legible.

I liked his version more actually. He's just tucked it too far in. If he keeps some space between the different elements then I think his setup can work out well. But, taste.

Yeah, Didn't know you watered down acrylics. This'll make my life easier.
Thanks Autumn. I like the way you organized the page. I think I'll go for something like that but I think I might keep the body of the text all on one side. I think it looks kind of awkward with a few lines in one column.
I took a photoshop class last year in High School and a few projects were to be done in Indesign but the teacher never taught us any "rules" like what looks good or how to do certain things. He literally had students make PDF tutorials on how to do things for extra credit and they were all ripped off of websites. So basically I've just played around for a year and this is where I am now. I think I'm doing pretty good for myself though. Do colleges or universities expect you know some basics of what looks good and what doesn't? I just go off of what I think looks good.
well i think you've kind of contradicted yourself there, you will struggle to know what looks good and what doesn't if you don't know "the basics" :P
i got into university onto a graphic design degree with a portfolio full of photos and art and a good Photoshop knowledge. i didn't know how to use Illustrator and i'd never even heard of InDesign, but over the last 2 years i've found i've learnt an awful lot - even though very little of it is taught by the teachers themselves. they help you decide what looks good, and then it's up to you and Google to find out how to do it :P
just practice practice practice, it'll never do any harm.
and i think you're right to keep it in one column, i've just gotten caught up with 2 columns for this last brief it's taking over my mind~
