I was actually messing around and doing random crap and then figured out how to add some real basic flare to everything and then was like oh hey that looks cool i'm going to abuse that so everyone will like me.

Those Rocks, Maya, look severely unfinished if you don't mind me saying. The detail of the woman juxtaposed to the detail or lack there of, of the rocks kind of offset it.

It was already quite a stretch because it was a figure study of a victoria's secret model

if you're drawing a realistic image (albeit with a fantasy creature) then it probably should stick to what's traditionally recognised.

if he was doing some surreal piece then go for it, but i'm not going to paint a horse in a field with 6 legs because i felt like it.

I think the fact it's a beautiful woman with a fish for a bottom-half is the more important part of the character. It's still instantly recognisable as a mermaid so messing with the basic idea a little bit is fine - more than fine, actually, it's admirable that the artist thought of something slightly new and interesting.

Mermaid = recognised, fictional, fantastical creature

By your logic, Tolkein should never have made elves tall and powerful because it messes with the old traditionally recognised view of elves as tiny pixie people.

I didn't have any design in mind during the whole process lol.
As Username11 mentioned, I just painted whatever I had in mind at the time.
She was a figure study of a victoria secret model, then she became this half mermaid, half shark, half dugong being.

I had fun making it, I think it's all that matters xD
