Nobody will buy it. But everybody will have it :v:
Nobody will buy it. But everybody will have it :v:
good luck using it as it needs auth to login...
Nobody will buy it. But everybody will have it :v:
Have fun with that.
Nobody will buy it. But everybody will have it :v:
Please, do share your thinking.
The binary will be in the App Store if anyone thinks they can use it without paying. Hint: you can't.
-snip- idiot.
Is there any way you can describe how you plan to make the app crack-proof? No specifics, obviously, but some of them crash on startup, etc.
The app goes through Hexxeh's server, and it automatically checks if the account that uses the app bought the upgrade. He can probably add some nasty things if he wanted, like permabanning pirates.

Care to explain why you thought my above post was dumb, icemaz?
[hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFhB-g-PAts[/hd] Out of NOWHERE
where is oify
where is oify
OIFY isn't on the main forum list hence it's not in the application. [editline]27th May 2011[/editline] Oh by the way if anyone can post details of what they think might be a plausible attack on the DRM and I think your idea could work I'll throw you a copy of the binary so you can try your ideas out.

I'm getting overly excited for this.
[hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFhB-g-PAts[/hd] Out of NOWHERE
These speeds are incredibly unrealistic... The homepage loads almost imperceptibly fast on my ADSL connection, and on my phone it loads in less than a second over my 3g at home. Obviously facepunch goes through periods of varying speed but fuck me I've never seen anything like your testing before.

I also noticed in the video you weren't actually connected to 3G when you were using the phone, you were just using the standard data connection.

Thought I'd illustrate my point. Caveat emptor: This isn't scientific, is done over wifi a few rooms away, and facepunch is not as fast as it usually is. Still, nothing like the results shown in the other video. I also can't record my phone as it's my video camera so you'll have to take my word :v: [editline]27th May 2011[/editline]
cache?
Well it's not like the cache is going to disappear is it? You should be selling this because it's easier, it clearly isn't faster. Certainly I have no use for such a thing but others might.
well it's faster on the phone
well it's faster on the phone
Is it, though? There's always a multi-second overhead with any request over a mobile network, but past that the loading times are similar. I get 2 megabits per second throughput over 3g in my area, and the majority of the content is cached. It's just text. Perhaps a little more text, but certainly nothing that's going to affect my life in any significant way.
The ADSL test isn't really a very good comparison, I think it's just there for reference. However, 2G/3G speeds can fluctuate a lot. In one area, 3G might be just fine for browsing in Safari. In another, it's horrible. In my area, even if you have 3G, the speeds are terrible and even things like the Twitter app struggle. There are some data usage benchmarks a few pages back. With any given connection speed, transferring less data is going to take less time. The data for just the HTML for a page of a thread, which can't be cached since you're reloading it, is still significantly larger than the equivalent data downloaded by the application.
Have fun with that.
Yeah I'm not using my phone to browse in the first place.

Most of the time, you're waiting for a slot in a queue with a mobile connection. That slot will take the same amount of time to become available no matter how much data you transfer, and the html will take little/no time even if it is more data. 1-2KB is insignificant. It might take 1-2ms more, but that is not important when you're spending most of the time (measured in seconds) making the connection to begin with.
So, Hexxeh, why didn't you just make the app five bucks? Were there some sort of complications?
What happened? Will it no longer cost 5 bucks?
Goddamn can't they just approve it already
Care to explain why you thought my above post was dumb, icemaz?
Your constant flaunting of the DRM and lack of trust in us it's just annoying me.
Icemaz don't start an argument
Your constant flaunting of the DRM and lack of trust in us it's just annoying me.
stand up the wonder that is hexxeh

I'll put a note in the video just to re-affirm this. Two, I explicitly turned off 3G just after the baseline test (you probably missed it) because the 3G in my area is complete shit (I'm at the edge of a mast so it jumps between the two) and to emulate a worst-case scenario situation where you're in the countryside and you've just gotta have your fix of the Rule 34 thread. How long does it take you to load the homepage on 2G on a cold boot in MobileSafari?
Hexxeh, you should really think about using the wonderful free retina tab bar icons from The Working Group I found the other day. http://blog.twg.ca/2010/11/retina-display-icon-set/ I did a lazy Photoshop to change some of them to demonstrate. I didn't bother to change the bubble (but, if you look at the link, I like the megaphone icon for that one) because of the extensive layer styles work I'd have to do. I did a bit of modifying to the book icon because it looked a bit plain on its own. Do what you will, this was just a 5-minute Photoshop to make my point.
