Will people like me who own an Android device ever get this app?
No one I know in real life owns any Apple product. Actually, Apple pretty much doesn't exist in my country.
Our piracy protection scheme is transparent to honest users, doesn't make things more difficult, and yet fucks over any attempt at piracy. I'd say that's the perfect "DRM" scheme really.
$5 for an app that won't let me use an alt account because it uses accounts to phone home... Let's be honest - it's not the perfect DRM scheme.
$5 for an app that won't let me use an alt account because it uses accounts to phone home... Let's be honest - it's not the perfect DRM scheme.
How's it phoning home? The entire application requires you login, the fact we check you actually bought it when you login is moot. You shouldn't even really have alts, either.
I don't use any alts (and I don't have any iOS devices, so this really isn't relevant to me personally) , but if I were to buy an app like this, I'd expect it to be purely a client that simply connects in the same way that a web browser would (but prettier) This whole thing with associating my account with what should be a simple mobile frontend would be a bit much for me. Each to his own, though. I'm not saying it's going to destroy the project or anything. If this is ported to Android, then it will be relevant to me, and the amount of server-side crap involved will be the difference between a sale or no sale
This is a piracy protection decision. People could simply pirate the application if it was just a paid application. By using in-app purchases, my servers can verify the user actually purchased the upgrade. When you buy the upgrade, your device gets a digital receipt. It then uploads this to my servers along with your username. My servers then send the receipt to Apple to check whether it's valid, and if it is, we mark that receipt as used on my server and add the upgrade to your account. Essentially, it's bulletproof.
So, you can make it for us to make us able to link it to a different account on ban or on demand? It would still be secure and you wont lose the app atm you get permabanned.
My thread is in one of the screenshots. aww ye. Can't wait :3
How's it phoning home? The entire application requires you login, the fact we check you actually bought it when you login is moot.
If it's transparent to you, what does it matter? It's there to stop people pirating the application. [editline]21st May 2011[/editline]
what if you made the alt because you forgot the password to your main account and the reset email never came through?
Contact myself or any other mod and we'll try to help you recover your old account.
What happends if it's a regular ban. Like a day. Does the app just not load? [editline]21st May 2011[/editline] Or is there a ban screen of some sort
to pay garry for access to the site via our new Facepunch API
paying for api access wat
Oh I forgot to ask. Is Read threads active? Because I use that ALOT
paying for api access wat
App accesses his site, it's right that he gets a cut of the profits for allowing access. We have a very reasonable revenue sharing deal in place. [editline]21st May 2011[/editline]
Oh I forgot to ask. Is Read threads active? You've simply changed my mind, I'm most likely going to buy this as long as it works with a 2g model :v: A few questions Are stickies shown in the app (highlighted yellow)? How will we know what thread is locked? What does getting banned look like on the app? Will the rules be featured? Will achieve support be implanted?
App accesses his site, it's right that he gets a cut of the profits for allowing access. We have a very reasonable revenue sharing deal in place.
so basically no one else will get api access for free, assuming it can be used to get free forum access via the app.

Locked threads are greyed out on the thread list. Getting banned is just like on here, you can only see the refugee camp. You still need to register on the site, where you should see the rules, so rules aren't in the app. No archive support planned.
so basically no one else will get api access for free, assuming it can be used to get free forum access via the app.
Define free forum access? There's no free version of the application. Individual app developers will need to strike deals with garry like I did.
Individual app developers will need to strike deals with garry like I did.
what if someone wants to make a free app? will they have to pay a fee? will users have to pay for a fee? this whole model is a restrictive mess.
$5 is really steep for an app like this, I'll pass.
what if someone wants to make a free app? will they have to pay a fee? will users have to pay for a fee? this whole model is a restrictive mess.
That's up to garry.
my iphone comes with an internet browser doesn't yours
my iphone comes with an internet browser doesn't yours
Sure, mine takes around 30-45 seconds to load a page of a thread completely over GPRS, doesn't yours?
$5 is really steep for an app like this, I'll pass.
Why'd you vote yes then? :v:
Why'd you vote yes then? :v:
Because I support you, not that much to pay though.
Because I support you, not that much to pay though.
That's not what it asks, it asks if you're buying. If you're not buying, you vote no, if you're buying, you vote yes. Is it really so difficult? :tinfoil:
Looks good, and I understand the reasoning behind the pricing, but I'd rather just go on Safari and spend the extra time on the unfriendly interface than paying the cash.
well, if it matters, i'm more interested in personal api access rather than developing an app for others to use. i imagine i'd have to pay for access though since there's a possibility it can be used to emulate the fpios authorative proxy server. or something. which i guess i'm okay with. :psyduck:
Looks good, and I understand the reasoning behind the pricing, but I'd rather just go on Safari and spend the extra time on the unfriendly interface than paying the cash.
Just use the free versions. Loading a few ads is probably faster than loading lots of uncesscary scripts and images.
Just use the free versions. Loading a few ads is probably faster than loading lots of uncesscary scripts and images.
Free version probably isn't going to happen anymore.
Couldn't you just remove the flag that tells it to scale from the plist?
Yup, you can do that, that's basically what FullForce does. Apple won't accept apps like that though. You can do it on your own iPad though, and it works just great. I've designed most things so that they'll work independent of resolution. There are a couple alignment bugs on iPad, but it's still very usable.
