I liked that it was realistic but that's also what I slightly disliked, it gave it a bleaker feel. I guess that's just the nerd in me craving lasers and space battles from watching so much ST:TNG and Stargate.
One of my favorite scenes in all of film. So beautiful. Glad you mentioned how much you loved the effects and acting. I think they make an already engaging sci-fi story even more captivating.
I loved the movie because it pictures the space so realistic and harmonic with its "no sound in space" and Donauwalzer. I mean it's made 42 years ago and much of its effects are better than some movies in our time.
Trumbull <3
I love this film. It's so realistic, beautiful in a way and breathtakingly mindfucking. Definitely in my top 10.
Like the end of Inception.
2001 leaves way more to the imagination than the end of Inception, but I see your point.
Great film. Not a lot of people seem to appreciate it. I can definitely see why. Still, I loved it. I've always been able to handle slower-paced films well.
i hated dr strangelove
The first time I saw this I thought it was very long, but when I watched it again recently I felt like it was over in minutes. Weird. Love it though.

Book was way better.
Such a beautiful movie.
I want to like this movie. I wanted to think that it was great, but I didn't. I love Stanley Kubrick. I love Eyes Wide Shut, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining and Full Metal Jacket. The man is one of my favorite directors. I recently watched this film of his and I honestly thought it was just...good. Just good; not great. I love the "Dawn Of Man" and HAL sequences, but I just didn't get it. I will watch it again when I've done my research on it because I REALLY want to like it. If anyone can explain the last 20 minutes to me I'd be very thankful. As of now, this one gets a 7/10. I thought the acting was great, the characters were memorable and the special effects hold up even today. What did everyone else think? again, if anyone can explain the latter part of the movie, I'd be in your debt.
Artistic. People won't understand it from an artistic view if they have to watch movies in a certain way that a teacher has to tell their pupils to do. I understand where you are coming from, but to be honest... whining and asking, will not give you the deeper understanding. It is you who has to try. [editline]14th December 2010[/editline] Watching it in a class isn't beneficial. It is a very different experience, as you get a more personal response seeing a movie for the first time by yourself. [editline]14th December 2010[/editline]
Saw this shit in 70mm. :3: Pristine new print too.
What, where, how???!?
Some friends went to see a 70mm Print of it at the Arclight in LA. lucky bastards.
i imagine the blu-ray was made from the highest available print, why not be happy with that?
I don't have a blu-ray player, and really just to see it on the big screen would be amazing.
I can beat all of you. I saw it in a 70mm print, brand new, at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater, at an event hosted by Tom Hanks. :smug:
Some friends went to see a 70mm Print of it at the Arclight in LA. lucky bastards.
The Arclight is fine, just overpriced to shit. [editline]15th December 2010[/editline]
what the shit was tom hanks doing hosting it
Apparently it's his favorite movie. And afterwords, we went through scene by scene to analyze the movie. And the analyzing was being done by him. TOM FUCKING HANKS. [editline]15th December 2010[/editline] Oh yeah, and there was behind the scenes footage. And Six people from the movie's production were interviewed on stage. It took like six goddamned hours, but holy fuck was it the best thing in the universe.
i imagine the blu-ray was made from the highest available print, why not be happy with that?
Because Blu-ray is 1080p and 70mm is.. well, 70mm?
What, where, how???!?
A local theater had a weeklong "70mm festival" where 70mm classics like 2001, Lawrence of Arabia and Blade Runner were shown. I only caught 2001 but that was glorious.
There were parts that made me so damn anxious because they dragged on FOREVER. My brain still fills full of fuck though when they hit the pace scenes and they rotate the set so it looks like thye are walking up the walls and stuff like that. Read the BOOK, picture things in your own head and it all makes much more sense. Also, the others (2010, 2061 and 3001) are only in book form.
Also, the others (2010, 2061 and 3001) are only in book form.
I know at least 2010 exists as a movie. I have it on laserdisc.
I know at least 2010 exists as a movie. I have it on laserdisc.
I heard about that. Is it any good?
I heard about that. Is it any good?
Probably not as good as 2001.
Well it did give us "my god, it's full of stars!" etc.
I heard about that. Is it any good?
Have not seen it yet. I got it in an assload of discs for $150.
The first time I saw it, me and my friends took a 1.5 hour drive up to Los Angeles to see it in a theater on Hollywood Boulevard, in 70mm film. They even played the score before the movie and dimmed the lights a few minutes into the movie instead of just keeping the lights off. There was an intermission halfway through, and the popcorn was NOT your average Edwards or AMC popcorn. The whole experience was excellent, plus I enjoyed the movie a lot. It was awesomely confusing. Oh yeah and afterwards we drove back and had dinner at 2AM at a Norms, which was surprisingly busy for 2AM.
