The Shining was my first Kubrick movie. I believe my second one was...dammit, I think it was Full Metal Jacket or A Clockwork Orange. Screw it. I'll watch it again.
Think about influences in space technology too. I sadly watched things like Alien and Star Wars before 2001 :saddowns: But still.. In ways beneficial.

I grew up watching Star Wars, Alien, and plenty of other science fiction and yet on my first viewing of 2001 (which was only last year) I absolutely loved it. Probably because I had already seen Full Metal Jacket and The Shining by that time, but still.
I did say that "in ways... Beneficial" As in I could identify with 2001s influences.

Also, I just finished watching this Was alright, obviously nothing compared to 2001, but a decent sequel and a good movie.
and i hated dr strangelove
Poor you :ohdear:
I just watched this in 1080p on blu-ray and was impressed at how the space scenes held up to time. It was almost like watching a modern film.
Metropolis amazed me more in terms of the times they portrayed. 2001 wasn't as big a shock in terms of stunts, more in terms of space technology and models. That is what had a major effect on sci-fi for me.
Does it look any better on blu ray, I'm guessing not becuase it was filmed in SD.
Does it look any better on blu ray, I'm guessing not becuase it was filmed in SD.
It doesn't work like that. It was filmed on 70mm film, which is a much higher resolution than 1080p.
This movie does have a reputation for being very boring, but I find it very interesting. Space in movies has never looked as good as it has in this picture and the classical music just makes it even more awesome.
what are your thoughts on this poster i am making [img_thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1482927/Posters/2001%20poster%20semi%20final.png[/img_thumb]
I love when some posters are better than the official one.
I was a little frustrated when I tried watching this film. For some reason the DVD would not let me fast forward past the scene with the pre-historic men. I've heard many good things about it though.

My God. It's full of stars.
probably been said, but this makes A LOT more sense if you've read the book. The movie and the book were written at the same time, which is what makes this good in my opinion. generally, movies based on books are nothing compared to the book. but this was never really based on the book, it was wirtten with the book, and as a result they go quite well together. they were intended to be different. the book is a little less mystical about it, and it explains many things about the end sequence. it just really isn't possible to make the end sequence as it is in the book, so it seems to have been changed to what your average person knows as "that really trippy part with the lights" or maybe it was just written that way. I don't know.
Why would you want to skip a scene in 2001? Almost every scene is crucial to understanding the film. That's an insult.
Well, a lot of it is just to build up atmosphere, I think. You can't really say that they're all crucial, especially not in the beginning.
Well, a lot of it is just to build up atmosphere, I think. What's not important about that, derp?
Loved this movie, watched it with my brother but sadly he didn't enjoy it as much, think he found it boring and dissastifying.
If you mute the space scenes and play some daft punk it sorta feels like Interstella 5555
